My grammar needs help but I think thatโs closer
Creo que tuvimos un miembro que viviรณ en Argentina cuando era niรฑo.
Yeah I think using the infinitive of estar is the right choice.
When in doubt, throw in a โqueโ lol
vivo en estados unidos para viente tres anos. Hablaba espanol para uno ano.
Spanish is probably my best language, but I feel guilty for promoting it now
In the states at least
Well I have a spanish final tomorrow. I might be askign you guys for helps during my review session.
Right now I am reviewing Biology ftw.
Estaremos a trabajar la pared.
I can speak little swedish so if anyone wants to know basic sentences and phrases I can show you how to yell at muhammad if you go to sweden
I lived in Mexico for one year. Was raised by illegals for 3 fluent in Spanish speak, read, and write. Let me know if I can be of assistance
But they have to go back
I speak bits and pieces of German and Italian, and I'm going to be learning Latin to fluency starting in January so I'd be more than happy to share resources and lessons with anyone interested in learning what is left of Latin
@Kingfish ecclesiatical Latin, medieval, or Ancient Latin?
Ceart go leor! Is maith liom รฉ!
@ThisIsChris well id hope it's ancient Latin however I'm not sure. I'll know more in January
I wager its probably unlikely that it's ancient Latin
@Kingfish I started reading this, it's interesting.
I use the Pimsleur method.
http://www.pimsleur.com
My African cousin is a polylinguist, dude speaks 9 language's.
I can understand a little Ukrainian and Afrikaans.
Pimsleur is really a great system. It trains your ear so well. And that's a big part that is missing from other systems
For sure. It's more than just memorizing words. It's basically instant conversation.
@RevStench Since he was a kid? Does he just know the tribal languages of the region?
5 since childhood, Zulu, Afrikaans, Xhosa and two others before he graduated.
He worked for Mercedes and he picked up German fast, and Merc makes all employees learn German, based. Then he worked for some French company and Learned French due to him spending a lot of time in France. I forget what else he speaks.
My brother has 4 kids and I have the 3 oldest learning German already. It's so cool to watch how they pick it up.
I wish we were forcrd to learn a second language here in the states.
We kind of do, but it's bullshit. I "learned" French, but forgot almost all of it because the teaching sucked and the frequency of exchange was low
We don't start in grade school. I'm talking day one of your education you start learning a second or third language.
Guten Tag!
Hallo @Rick
Hello, if anyone is interested I'll translate articles from Russian nationalist site "Sputnik I Pogrom" into English. Just let me know.
@Nemets We have a Ukrainian learner if you know any of that @RevStench
@this_that5553 @Rick hat ihr bock ein monatlich sprach Abend?
@Prestor John Nothing yet. Getting a sense of who knows what right now. (I don't know German yet)

@RevStench what type of Ukrainian are you learning? The standard type they teach in books, or the mixed dialect that most people speak?
It's standard.
For those that have learned a 'foreign language' without moving abroad and being immersed in it-- how did you do it?
I can teach some basic Irish if you guys want
Or at least translate some stuff at random and help with word pronunciation
@Deleted User added to sticky
@Deleted User I've gotten quite far with Michel Thomas and then writing/speaking with penpals from sites like Interpals
Personally, I wouldn't waste time on Duolingo. only if bored.
I would always recommend Michel Thomas esque systems for a beginner to get up to speed. Then I'd say "go for it".
Granted, it's tougher with certain languages to do that, but yeah.
Michel Thomas doesn't have an Irish course
Ah yeah, thereโs some online courses for Irish though. Sponsored by Ireland gov I think
@Prestor John Wir kรถnnen ein Gesprach auf Discord-Voice-Chat haben. Sagst du mir wann.

Nein! Ja! Ich bin ein Berliner!
Gutentag
That's all I got for German. I do know some Italian and a bit of French
I am a jelly ๐ฉ
@spooky_kraut#8307 can put me down for French and Japanese if you want. My written mandarin is rusty but my spoken mandarin is fine
I speak Polish and some Russian, in case anyone needs practice
Or can teach me more Russian
@Rick erste Dienstag im Januar?
Damn, I need to learn Ukrainian / Russian
Anyone speak portuguese?
Kinda tempted to learn a little- I just like how it sounds
I do
Are you around a lot of Brazilians or something?
@ophiuchus I speak some continental Portuguese
Not really no- just kinda interested
@ThisIsChris it's rather different than the brazilian iteration right?
Yeah the pronounciation is different and a lot of word choices are different. I've heard it described like if a Scott, a Texan, and a South African were speaking in a room together, though I'm pretty sure it's further than that. The Portuguese people I knew would rather get a textbook in English to study from rather than one in Brazilian Portuguese, although cost and selection and wide-knowing of English in Portugal contributes to that too.
Portuguese people hate the Brazilian way lol
Plus there's a bunch of different accents within Brazil too, just like how the US has a bunch of different accents.
Are we updating the language list still in case we need interpretation on anything we know who to ask? I can do the Espaรฑol thing.
They took German out of my highschool because of windmills of peace.
@Anthony Sealy - MO it's all updated
Thanks. I'm fluent, but anything for publication would need copy edited. Lived overseas a bit, so I learned the language, unlike our southern neighbors who come here.
I found a free website for language learning that seems pretty good. www.duolingo.com
I'm attempting to learn German.
They have a cellphone app for free too @Der Seeteufel - SD
Thanks I'll have to get that so I can practice when I'm on break at work.
One of the most helpful things they added to Duolingo was chatting practice with a bot. It sounds silly but itโs awesome practice for a typing conversation
Ich spreche Deutsch sehr gern und ich bin ziemlich gut mit der Sprache. Wenn sie mit der Sprache hilfe brauchen, dann koennen sir mir einen PM senden . ๐ ๐
Aber vielleicht, dass was ich gesagt hatte nicht perfekt ist, naja es ist Deutsch und die Grammatik ist immer ein Schlacht.
Danke
@this_that5553 I can help with French, I've studied for years and done exchange programs.
Also, if it hasn't been shared before, http://www.fsi-language-courses.net/fsi-language-courses/ has some great resources.
done!
@Marseille Great recommendation!
I can help anyone trying to learn Celtic languages or Latin but that's about it
Buenos dรญas ustedes. Soy "Wilhelm" y yo quiero practicar Espaรฑol y aprendo Alemรกn.
Vamos
In the Slav server
DM for link
Haha
Hello, I would like to begin German. Is there a class starting soon for a regular voice chat?
Und ich
So how does the language server work?
@Deleted User try pinging <@&387091385075105804> who are all people who have volunteered to be pinged on "academics" like language!
@Wilhelm-OH#5377 Como quieres practicar? Por voz? No se si hay gente suficiente para una charla en grupo.
@everyone One of the Florida boys created a server exclusively for languages.
https://discord.gg/6VmbNa
@StrawberryArmada I've been learning some Irish and Scots Gaelic through music and poetry. I can't converse in the language, or really form a sentence on my own, but have mostly memorized phrases. Listening to the music really helps with pronouncing the words.
I made a massive playlist of Gaelic music if you would be interested in that.
@John O - Any way you could post a new link to the language server? Thank you.
https://discord.gg/yA8ZRV
@everyone
Thanks!!
are language learning discussions still on the separate server?
Any native German speakers? I've been learning on Duolingo for a while now, but the voices are computer generated. How exactly does one pronounce the word "milch" ?
Meelkh
Is there any sort of "sh" sound?
I have a feeling the robovoice is a little distorted.
Not on that word.
That I understand.
Pretty sure the ch in milch is like the one in ich and unlike the one in nacht
I think the best approximation of the sound is the h in the word โhueโ
OK, so there is an exhalation of air at the end?
Kind of catlike
I think High German Hoch Deutsch they may say it like an sh
The male and female voices seem to differ a bit too on the pronunciation.
Itโs a fricative, so thereโs a puff of air. Like English F or sh
Itโs not a stop, so thereโs air.
It's hard to say it ๐
It takes some time for sure
In some dialects of English (including general American) itโs the same sound thatโs in โhumanโ
The h glide sort of thing
Not everyone says it like that
Most people do though
I will practice! Thanks for the assist you two.
Itโs much more toward the front of the mouth than the ch in noch
That oneโs way in the back, this is at the alveolar ridge
Np man
@John O - could I get a new invite thanks
@Freiheit - CA same
To what @SuperTomPerry -RI ?
@Freiheit - CA always wanted to learn German as well, I just DMD @BryceB-ND cause he said he spoke
@John O - thanks Johnny
np
Ich kann sehr gut Deutsch sprechen ๐ dm me or just speak here
I can help you with your pesky german ch's
I can help anyone with their Mandarin chinese if they need it
Looking for someone to practice French with.
Helping me get my accent to a understandable level would be greatly appreciated
@Johnboy I can do that. I lived in Montreal for a couple of years when I was a kid- my French is pretty good.
Anyone in @here well versed in Latin
I'm thinking of learning another language (either picking up Spanish where I left off in high school or learning German from scratch). Which would you recommend and is duolingo any good?
Duolingo is fine for vocabulary, itโs less good when it comes to internalizing grammar. Thereโs really no way around the latter without slogging through a reference grammar.
Any fluent German speakers here? I have two sentences for translation; eBay seller can't understand what google translate spit out.
"Can you please verify that there are no cracks in the plastic worm/reduction gear? My motor works but the gear is cracked and it prevents operation."
it's called a worm gear, but also known as a reduction gear
@BryceB-ND โ๏ธ
Koennen sie bitte sagen, wenn dieses Stรผck arbeitet? is a shitty way to ask but thats the best i can do atm
Meinen Motor arbeitet aber der "Gang"(?) ist kaputt, also das ganzen Motor arbeitet nicht.
I'm rusty but try that.
Idk the nouns for plastic worm/reduction gear lol so that's basically asking if the motor works, and then explaining your situation with your current motor
Koennen sie bitte sagen, wenn dieses vorgelege arbeitet und auch, dass es nicht kaputt ist?
OK I will try these, thank you!
This guy in Germany has the only listing in the world for this exact part I need...but a cracked gear would be easy to miss. That's why I want him to check it first. It's hard to convey technical terms when they're not so readily learned in language programs.
Yeah and believe me, technical terms can be ridiculous in
in German
nope\
How intelligible is Dutch to Afrikaans?
I've been all over the place with learning languages. Anyway, recently decided to pursue Spanish and it's just so discouraging how much leftism is injected into everything. I took it in hs but I am starting from the beginning and they're trying so hard to inject intersectionality every step of the way. Not just the picture posted, but every time they introduce a new adjective, ie iteligente, it's immediately introduced in the family section and every time it's associated with your sister or daughter. This may seem nitpicky, but you wonder why the intelligentsia is so far leftist, it's little things like this. Constant reinforcement of diversity even when approaching it from a normie lifestyle/perspective.
Dude even has a fashy haircut.
Looking for Deutsch rechtspodcasten, any recommendations would be appreciated.
@โกClarkโก Not exactly a podcast, but this is good.
Thanks @Papa Pizzagate
good evening folks,
Iโve been thinking about getting into freelance translation (English>Russian and vice versa) and I wanted to start in friendly circles. If anyone can point me towards an individual or organization that could use such a service, Iโd love to know more.
huh maybe I should try to get into that too
gonna post this in entrepreneurship too
