I went to the YMCA years ago, I liked it. Lots of people there, but no one using the heavy weights. Plus my YMCA had a bad ass locker room, sauna, steam room, massive shower room. All pluses for me.

Gyms that have lots of machines are less intimidating to start.

Gyms with free weights are better for strength training.

2) Instead of looking for someone to show you how do use machines/freeweights....
A) Consider coming up with a plan online. There are an infinate amount of articles and free weight training routines availlable.

@StrawberryArmada Bro, find a beginner plan from someone who you see as an expert.

Then follow the plan with discipline. After 3-4 months of lifting, you'll have the experience to know what you want, and how to achieve it.

For me, Mark Rippetoe was my guru. I followed his starting strength plan for like a year, and I gained 20 solid lbs of bodymass.

I gained 20 solid lbs after following the Starting Strength program.

Like @Brandon Ironside- ND said, you need a REAL program, one you can keep track of, and chart your improvements, and you need to eat more than you presently do.

Everything you need won't be for sale at once.

I bought plates when available, a bench, a power rack, 3 barbells, a pullup/dip station. all for about $400 all together.

Since we seem to be dwelling on this dynamic of how we justify our reactions(or over-reactions) to perceived aggression, I'd like to dig deeper on this subject.

My root philosophy:
-If a man lacks the capacity for violence, he cannot choose non-violence. Because non-violence is his ONLY option.
-A strong and virtuous man has the capacity for violence, yet is very discriminatory in it's application.

As @Deleted User has said, training and experience are vital. By experiencing violence, in small doses in controlled environments(martial arts/sparring), we grow in our capacity to not be intimidated, to protect those close to us and to project our dominance when the situation calls for it.

In my view a virtuous man is:
1)Physically strong. This deters aggression from others, and increases your competency.
2)Martially skilled with his own body. ex. Martial arts, Grappling, striking etc..
3)Martially skilled with the tools of their time. This would means firearms.
