Sure, you can look at public opinion for various issues which had very drastic changes in fairly short spans of time. It's a bit less noticeable in the US since there's only two political parties, though, in countries with a parliamentary system, it's not unusual that a party will have a super majority in parliament one election and be reduced to irrelevance two elections later.

Unless, of course, he's just using this as a cover for an ethnostate, in which case that criticism doesn't really apply. However, that brings up a new problem, which is that most of the general public is going to be smart enough to see past his cover.
