@ThisIsChris it's rather different than the brazilian iteration right?

2017-12-29 19:48:11 UTC

Yeah the pronounciation is different and a lot of word choices are different. I've heard it described like if a Scott, a Texan, and a South African were speaking in a room together, though I'm pretty sure it's further than that. The Portuguese people I knew would rather get a textbook in English to study from rather than one in Brazilian Portuguese, although cost and selection and wide-knowing of English in Portugal contributes to that too.

2017-12-29 19:55:04 UTC

Portuguese people hate the Brazilian way lol

2017-12-29 19:55:50 UTC

Plus there's a bunch of different accents within Brazil too, just like how the US has a bunch of different accents.

2018-01-09 02:25:13 UTC

Are we updating the language list still in case we need interpretation on anything we know who to ask? I can do the Espaรฑol thing.

2018-01-09 02:29:06 UTC

They took German out of my highschool because of windmills of peace.

2018-01-10 03:20:06 UTC

@Anthony Sealy - MO it's all updated

2018-01-10 04:26:39 UTC

Thanks. I'm fluent, but anything for publication would need copy edited. Lived overseas a bit, so I learned the language, unlike our southern neighbors who come here.

2018-01-13 02:03:44 UTC

I found a free website for language learning that seems pretty good. www.duolingo.com

2018-01-13 02:05:01 UTC

I'm attempting to learn German.

2018-01-13 02:06:15 UTC

They have a cellphone app for free too @Der Seeteufel - SD

2018-01-13 02:07:32 UTC

Thanks I'll have to get that so I can practice when I'm on break at work.

2018-01-13 13:13:03 UTC

One of the most helpful things they added to Duolingo was chatting practice with a bot. It sounds silly but itโ€™s awesome practice for a typing conversation

2018-01-15 20:53:09 UTC

Ich spreche Deutsch sehr gern und ich bin ziemlich gut mit der Sprache. Wenn sie mit der Sprache hilfe brauchen, dann koennen sir mir einen PM senden . ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿ‘Œ

2018-01-15 20:56:06 UTC

Aber vielleicht, dass was ich gesagt hatte nicht perfekt ist, naja es ist Deutsch und die Grammatik ist immer ein Schlacht.

2018-01-16 02:33:23 UTC

Danke

2018-01-21 21:03:59 UTC

@this_that5553 I can help with French, I've studied for years and done exchange programs.

2018-01-21 21:07:33 UTC

Also, if it hasn't been shared before, http://www.fsi-language-courses.net/fsi-language-courses/ has some great resources.

2018-01-21 21:13:15 UTC

done!

2018-01-27 20:11:38 UTC

@Marseille Great recommendation!

2018-01-28 00:30:57 UTC

I can help anyone trying to learn Celtic languages or Latin but that's about it

2018-03-18 21:49:02 UTC

2018-03-18 21:51:14 UTC

2018-03-18 21:58:22 UTC

In the Slav server

2018-03-18 21:58:27 UTC

DM for link

2018-03-18 21:58:34 UTC

Haha

2018-03-18 22:06:03 UTC

Hello, I would like to begin German. Is there a class starting soon for a regular voice chat?

2018-03-18 22:11:33 UTC

Und ich

2018-03-19 00:52:29 UTC

So how does the language server work?

2018-03-19 05:01:37 UTC

@Deleted User try pinging <@&387091385075105804> who are all people who have volunteered to be pinged on "academics" like language!

2018-03-19 09:42:36 UTC

@Wilhelm-OH#5377 Como quieres practicar? Por voz? No se si hay gente suficiente para una charla en grupo.

2018-03-19 09:42:52 UTC
2018-03-29 22:25:04 UTC

@everyone One of the Florida boys created a server exclusively for languages.

https://discord.gg/6VmbNa

2018-03-31 00:28:59 UTC

@StrawberryArmada I've been learning some Irish and Scots Gaelic through music and poetry. I can't converse in the language, or really form a sentence on my own, but have mostly memorized phrases. Listening to the music really helps with pronouncing the words.

2018-03-31 00:29:22 UTC

I made a massive playlist of Gaelic music if you would be interested in that.

2018-04-20 01:38:18 UTC

@John O - Any way you could post a new link to the language server? Thank you.

2018-04-20 01:43:58 UTC
2018-04-20 01:44:58 UTC

Thanks!!

2018-06-13 23:46:50 UTC

are language learning discussions still on the separate server?

2018-06-13 23:46:58 UTC
2018-06-13 23:48:16 UTC
2018-06-13 23:48:18 UTC
2018-06-25 03:38:22 UTC

Any native German speakers? I've been learning on Duolingo for a while now, but the voices are computer generated. How exactly does one pronounce the word "milch" ?

2018-06-25 06:33:30 UTC

Meelkh

2018-06-25 07:46:19 UTC

Is there any sort of "sh" sound?

2018-06-25 07:46:30 UTC

I have a feeling the robovoice is a little distorted.

2018-06-25 07:47:24 UTC

Not on that word.

2018-06-25 07:48:09 UTC

That I understand.

2018-06-25 07:48:13 UTC

Pretty sure the ch in milch is like the one in ich and unlike the one in nacht

2018-06-25 07:48:42 UTC

I think the best approximation of the sound is the h in the word โ€œhueโ€

2018-06-25 07:48:46 UTC

OK, so there is an exhalation of air at the end?

2018-06-25 07:48:48 UTC

Kind of catlike

2018-06-25 07:49:34 UTC

I think High German Hoch Deutsch they may say it like an sh

2018-06-25 07:50:05 UTC

The male and female voices seem to differ a bit too on the pronunciation.

2018-06-25 07:51:16 UTC

Itโ€™s a fricative, so thereโ€™s a puff of air. Like English F or sh

2018-06-25 07:51:32 UTC

Itโ€™s not a stop, so thereโ€™s air.

2018-06-25 07:51:44 UTC

It's hard to say it ๐Ÿ™ƒ

2018-06-25 07:51:55 UTC

It takes some time for sure

2018-06-25 07:52:24 UTC

In some dialects of English (including general American) itโ€™s the same sound thatโ€™s in โ€œhumanโ€

2018-06-25 07:52:34 UTC

The h glide sort of thing

2018-06-25 07:52:40 UTC

Not everyone says it like that

2018-06-25 07:52:53 UTC

Most people do though

2018-06-25 07:53:06 UTC

I will practice! Thanks for the assist you two.

2018-06-25 07:53:18 UTC

Itโ€™s much more toward the front of the mouth than the ch in noch

2018-06-25 07:53:32 UTC

That oneโ€™s way in the back, this is at the alveolar ridge

2018-06-25 07:53:39 UTC

Np man

2018-08-26 01:45:46 UTC

Looking for someone to practice French with.

2018-10-01 22:20:43 UTC

Helping me get my accent to a understandable level would be greatly appreciated

2018-10-05 08:15:42 UTC

@Johnboy I can do that. I lived in Montreal for a couple of years when I was a kid- my French is pretty good.

2018-10-08 13:00:56 UTC

Anyone in @here well versed in Latin

2018-10-08 15:51:04 UTC

@Valaska Are you starting out?

2018-10-13 04:15:19 UTC

I'm thinking of learning another language (either picking up Spanish where I left off in high school or learning German from scratch). Which would you recommend and is duolingo any good?

2018-10-13 05:09:33 UTC

Duolingo is fine for vocabulary, itโ€™s less good when it comes to internalizing grammar. Thereโ€™s really no way around the latter without slogging through a reference grammar.

2018-10-26 05:11:55 UTC

Any fluent German speakers here? I have two sentences for translation; eBay seller can't understand what google translate spit out.

2018-10-26 05:12:20 UTC

"Can you please verify that there are no cracks in the plastic worm/reduction gear? My motor works but the gear is cracked and it prevents operation."

2018-10-26 05:12:44 UTC

it's called a worm gear, but also known as a reduction gear

2018-10-27 01:46:24 UTC

@BryceB-ND โ˜๏ธ

2018-10-27 03:39:52 UTC

Koennen sie bitte sagen, wenn dieses Stรผck arbeitet? is a shitty way to ask but thats the best i can do atm

2018-10-27 03:44:13 UTC

Meinen Motor arbeitet aber der "Gang"(?) ist kaputt, also das ganzen Motor arbeitet nicht.

2018-10-27 03:44:26 UTC

I'm rusty but try that.

2018-10-27 03:45:30 UTC
2018-10-27 03:47:35 UTC

Idk the nouns for plastic worm/reduction gear lol so that's basically asking if the motor works, and then explaining your situation with your current motor

2018-10-27 03:49:16 UTC

Koennen sie bitte sagen, wenn dieses vorgelege arbeitet und auch, dass es nicht kaputt ist?

2018-10-27 05:09:54 UTC

OK I will try these, thank you!

2018-10-27 05:19:12 UTC

This guy in Germany has the only listing in the world for this exact part I need...but a cracked gear would be easy to miss. That's why I want him to check it first. It's hard to convey technical terms when they're not so readily learned in language programs.

2018-10-27 12:12:36 UTC

Yeah and believe me, technical terms can be ridiculous in

2018-10-27 12:12:39 UTC

in German

2018-11-14 00:14:53 UTC

nope\

2018-12-07 05:19:30 UTC

How intelligible is Dutch to Afrikaans?
