How do they ever support themselves at a job were they cant machinegun jackhammer their bloodshot semichub with their roided doomfist every 20 seconds
@Korin Dickman each one is a days worth of calories if you're not doing much of any activity
Nihilism is a paradoxical belief. It argues that nothing matters, but yet anyone who holds to that violates its principle because without exception, they themselves value that belief.
That aside, it is also used predominantly as a get-out-of-jail-free card in debates. The so-called nihilist's argument is easily refuted, so he simply declares that it doesn't matter anyways.
It has interesting implications if taken very lightly, however. It can be used to say that value only comes from within oneself, and as such can be used to create values of deeper significance to an individual than a pre existing "traditional" system would. This, however, is not something anyone ever uses it for.
It's sort of a philosophical jellyfish
I'd say it falls under the family of relativism.
The proof or value of a philosophy exists purely in its results
What
You can predict the results of a philosophical system on a society based off of how well it conforms to natural moral law
All successful human societies have lived by some form or another of NML
Easy
1. Self preservation
2. Have children
3. Educate children
4. Maintain functional society
5. Worship God
All societies throughout history have done thise things
Short answer, Aquinas
Give me a sec to switch to computer
Aquinas arrived at NML by finding what individual threads ran consistent throughout societies
You cannot have a functional society without all 5 of those things
Let's go through this one line at a time
Your society cannot continue to exist if it does not require its members to self preserve
(yeah thats what i mean, any religious practice counts)
Your society cannot continue to exist if its members do not have children, and educate them in what it means to be a part of that society
it functionally IS a tautology but that doesnt make it meaningless
It is right to stay alive
It is right to have children
It is right to educate children
consider what would happen if your society fails to do those things then
it is impossible for a society to exist outside of those
they are worshipping themselves
thats kind of the point
its a baseline for a society to work
1. War is a violation of NML, but it happens as a result of the flaws within societies
thats an idiotic statement
was is a moral evil
war*
Someone who wants to destroy society is not going to be convinced by anything
and so are you saying that they are somehow morally equal to us?
they are by definition failed
there is a *right* way to live that by sheer definition means success
consider it a compromise between absolutism and utilitarian morality
I'm not saying I know the current right way to live within how our society is currently set up, but I know there is one
how do you know there isnt?
and yes that is not my answer
I know there is a right way to live because it is the way to obey all 5 precepts of NML, along with the other 7 secondary ones within today's society
Because they are an indivisible unit of cultural knowledge. You CANNOT continue as a society without obeying them
the two are literally the same thing
Because society is inherently order
There's hardly a difference
They are prescriptive for both the macro and micro scale
Ideally, yes
Order is morally better than chaos
yeah ok i fucked that part up
society is ordered by definition
i was more saying that i dont consider our society to be moving towards greater order
I want to switch my approach here for a minute, itll still get at the topic
Everyone has a place that they belong in society
many of the past problems in society came from the fact that they tried to define places based off of birth
peoples abilities determine their place
Order is best defined by its antonym, Chaos
Chaos, in terms of humans, is anarchy
Political Satanism, if you will
to abstract one level further, perfect order is like a machine, a clock or car
every piece in its place with its specific function it was made to perform
no
well
it depends i guess
directed vs undirected chaos
pure chaos cannot exist because even chaotic things have laws like gravity etc acting upon them
so the ocean, while chaotic, is also somewhat ordered
order is law and predictability
taken from a wide enough lens, anything can have order to it
fair enough
i consider those to be more like
indivisible units of information
the indivisible unit is a really hard concept for me to explain
like
its a baseline
idk its a concept i cant really put into words very well
the apple from the garden of eden REPRESENTS that concept well
its a fundamental unit of information. much of the rest of science can be broken down, but the base of it is the behavior of the atom
sub atomic, behavior isnt understandable
oh god no
stop typing
let me go back
an atom is the best example of what i call a fundamental unit of info. that is, the smallest level of information you can break things down to, and still understand whats going on. if you break an atom, you cannot understand what is going on.
so to what Spider is saying now
