Oh look another non white person advocating for wholesale settlement of America

2019-01-17 16:14:51 UTC

I want to get an opinion from everyone. Do you think those of European decent should carve out a place of their own and stay separated? Much of the world has benefited from colonialism, in the long run. Do you think there should be another wave of colonialism (not just military bases everywhere like the current system, but actual colonies like in SA)?

2019-01-17 16:26:27 UTC

Can I advocate for both? (not that I am....)

2019-01-17 16:29:07 UTC

I’ll accept the egard cucking for blacks as long as they don’t hate whites. They’re misunderstanding of reality is less important than the actual putting down of men and white men specifically

2019-01-17 16:33:17 UTC

Colonialism has pretty well backfired on us in a number of ways. If you're going to conquer a place, *conquer* it, don't try to make nice.

2019-01-17 16:48:34 UTC

Colonialism is a waste of effort unless the land you're already on really and truly just can't sustain you anymore. All these big empires end up the same way. Everyone should leave others alone and be left alone.

2019-01-17 16:57:36 UTC

A nation should honestly be able to sustain itself in all its needs, and not require other people's goods to become powerful. Plenty of good examples in history where a wise nation over-powered a greedy empire.

2019-01-17 17:07:30 UTC

Civilization has to be scaled back then, self sufficiency is impossible with how we live anymore.

2019-01-17 17:07:59 UTC

In the west anyway.

2019-01-17 17:10:00 UTC

Colonies are also very expensive to maintain, it often costs more to administer a colony (espsecially ones with large aboriginal inhahibitants) than the colony produces in revenue. With some execptions.

All in all I don't think colonies are worth the effort, most of the time.

2019-01-17 17:14:23 UTC

@Virgil This. Colonies made a few people very rich, like the case of the British East India Company, but they were a net loss.

2019-01-17 17:18:30 UTC

The real question we should ask is how have we benefitted from colonialism as opposed to how the rest of the world have benefitted. I think it's debatable how much Europeans actually benefitted from colonialism, outside of the places that we settled directly.

2019-01-17 17:20:49 UTC

@unclefesterr Very true, India itself is a good example, while the colony was enormously profitable it was also enormously expensive to maintain, especially after the British government took over direct administration of India.

2019-01-17 17:21:01 UTC

Consider how many colonies are still held and maintained by their original colonizing nation. Should speak to colonialisms long term sustainability.

2019-01-17 17:31:10 UTC

I am still bitter towards the Conquistadors for saddling us with the mestizo menace.

2019-01-17 17:33:18 UTC

@Papa Pizzagate From my understanding, most European colonial holding today have been reduced to largely irrelevant places like a few islands in the Pacific or Carribbean or the north coast of South America.

2019-01-17 17:37:01 UTC

Much of England’s small settlements were for naval logistics. Bermuda and Hong Kong ect. Mercantilism takes infrastructure.

2019-01-17 17:43:00 UTC

I'll play devil's advocate and say that what the Conquistadors did made sense to a degree. In their minds it would be much easier to rule over people with some Spanish ancestry and who had a reason to be loyal to Spain as opposed to Amerindians who would be completely ungovernable.

2019-01-17 17:46:33 UTC

From a short term perspective economically colonialism did make sense.

2019-01-17 17:46:54 UTC

Granted in the modern economic context there is no long term reason to do so.

2019-01-17 18:04:52 UTC

And what about the American colony? I would say, if it had been maintained as intended, the United States would have been a huge success. But you’re right, the days of just setting up a colony from scratch is over. Now it requires vast resources to protect and maintain its existence.

2019-01-17 18:06:22 UTC

I would venture to say the American colonies worked better than most in part because population density was so incredibly low.

2019-01-17 18:07:50 UTC

American colonies were in a way conquest rather than subjugation.

2019-01-17 18:08:39 UTC

Having motives unrelated to trade surely made a difference as well.

2019-01-17 18:17:27 UTC

True. Historically those with the goal of acquiring farmland have been quite motivated.

2019-01-17 18:19:29 UTC

Countries founded as colonies, where the intention was to successfully conquer, are generally very successful countries. Any other colonies founded to be as a show of "wealth" back in the time, well those colonies are still complete crap, if they still exist at all.

2019-01-17 18:25:15 UTC

Anyone know how often confirmation emails for LOPF go out?

2019-01-17 18:54:05 UTC

No @Johnny B. Populus I'll probably watch it when I get off work

2019-01-17 19:02:03 UTC

@Johnny B. Populus yea, i usually watch/listen to allsup or TRE on my way to work

2019-01-17 19:07:01 UTC

Haven’t seen Allsup’s video but my bet is it relates to FtN’s recent deep dive on an alternate way to build the wall
