From a short term perspective economically colonialism did make sense.
Granted in the modern economic context there is no long term reason to do so.
And what about the American colony? I would say, if it had been maintained as intended, the United States would have been a huge success. But you’re right, the days of just setting up a colony from scratch is over. Now it requires vast resources to protect and maintain its existence.
I would venture to say the American colonies worked better than most in part because population density was so incredibly low.
American colonies were in a way conquest rather than subjugation.
Having motives unrelated to trade surely made a difference as well.
True. Historically those with the goal of acquiring farmland have been quite motivated.
Countries founded as colonies, where the intention was to successfully conquer, are generally very successful countries. Any other colonies founded to be as a show of "wealth" back in the time, well those colonies are still complete crap, if they still exist at all.
