@Sheamus of for sure! The context and even definition of terms definitely changes. I was just pointing out the historical context of the origins of the terms "left" and "right". I just think it's interesting that "right-wingers" today who support democracy or republicanism would be viewed as leftists or dare I even say liberals, in the original context of what definied "left" and "right" at the beginning of the French Revolution. The terms "left" and "right" today can include any number of things. I don't think there is a strict definition of right wing and left wing in the sense that, "if someone is right wing, they must believe this" or the same for the left. Do you think there are disqualifying factors for someone who identifies as right or left? For example, most people associate Richard Spencer with the far-right/alt-right whatever you want to call it; but he has some socialist-leaning positions such as universal healthcare? Does this, ipso facto, mean he's a leftist? I don't know, i think that's really open for discussion! 😃
@MaximusXVI well, as i understand left and right, left is government and right is freedom, therefore far left being dictatorship of a government controlled state, and far right being anarchy with no government. Right is more individual and left is more collective and tribal. That's the modern context as i understand it.

@Sheamus haha! Well, in a modern context that defines left-right based on the amount of power government has, monarchy would be considered left wing. Although I think most people may still associate monarchy, even in a modern context, with the right because of the values that are often associated with monarchy, such as hierarchy, tradition, respect for authority that many right wingers also hold. If we applied modern political terms, for example, to the American Revolution, it was the conservative patriots fighting the liberal king. That sounds funny because I think we all know that, regardless of what one thinks of George III, he certainly was not a "liberal!" I think everyone who was involved in the American Revolution, would today be considered rightwing, to some degree. The king who represents discipline and tradition, and the patriots representing freedom and individual rights.
@MaximusXVI yeah I'm not American, so I'm not going to pretend i know every detail of your history, but i do follow along with what you are getting at. I think the modern context is rather organic and naturally accepted, would make more sense to keep with that definition to avoid unnecessary confusion.
