My grammar needs help but I think that’s closer

Matthias 2017-12-13 18:21:51

Creo que tuvimos un miembro que vivió en Argentina cuando era niño.

Alfred-22 2017-12-13 18:21:55

Yeah I think using the infinitive of estar is the right choice.

this_that5553 2017-12-13 18:22:02

When in doubt, throw in a “que” lol

Alfred-22 2017-12-13 18:22:52

this_that5553 2017-12-13 18:23:33

Spanish is probably my best language, but I feel guilty for promoting it now

this_that5553 2017-12-13 18:23:40

I can speak little swedish so if anyone wants to know basic sentences and phrases I can show you how to yell at muhammad if you go to sweden

William Russell 2017-12-13 18:37:02

I lived in Mexico for one year. Was raised by illegals for 3 fluent in Spanish speak, read, and write. Let me know if I can be of assistance

William Russell 2017-12-13 18:38:12

But they have to go back

Kingfish 2017-12-13 19:11:18

I speak bits and pieces of German and Italian, and I'm going to be learning Latin to fluency starting in January so I'd be more than happy to share resources and lessons with anyone interested in learning what is left of Latin

ThisIsChris 2017-12-13 19:11:57

@Kingfish ecclesiatical Latin, medieval, or Ancient Latin?

Deleted User 2017-12-13 19:17:48

Ceart go leor! Is maith liom é!

Kingfish 2017-12-13 19:29:09

@ThisIsChris well id hope it's ancient Latin however I'm not sure. I'll know more in January

Kingfish 2017-12-13 19:29:32

I wager its probably unlikely that it's ancient Latin

ThisIsChris 2017-12-13 19:34:50

@Kingfish I started reading this, it's interesting.

RevStench 2017-12-13 19:50:45

I use the Pimsleur method.

RevStench 2017-12-13 19:53:18

My African cousin is a polylinguist, dude speaks 9 language's.
I can understand a little Ukrainian and Afrikaans.

this_that5553 2017-12-13 19:55:48

Pimsleur is really a great system. It trains your ear so well. And that's a big part that is missing from other systems

RevStench 2017-12-13 20:01:50

For sure. It's more than just memorizing words. It's basically instant conversation.

John O - 2017-12-13 20:10:55

@RevStench Since he was a kid? Does he just know the tribal languages of the region?

RevStench 2017-12-13 20:15:03

5 since childhood, Zulu, Afrikaans, Xhosa and two others before he graduated.

RevStench 2017-12-13 20:16:48

He worked for Mercedes and he picked up German fast, and Merc makes all employees learn German, based. Then he worked for some French company and Learned French due to him spending a lot of time in France. I forget what else he speaks.

RevStench 2017-12-13 20:17:50

My brother has 4 kids and I have the 3 oldest learning German already. It's so cool to watch how they pick it up.

RevStench 2017-12-13 20:21:39

I wish we were forcrd to learn a second language here in the states.

John O - 2017-12-13 20:43:53

We kind of do, but it's bullshit. I "learned" French, but forgot almost all of it because the teaching sucked and the frequency of exchange was low

RevStench 2017-12-13 20:47:34

We don't start in grade school. I'm talking day one of your education you start learning a second or third language.

Rick 2017-12-14 00:46:33

Nemets 2017-12-15 02:33:47

@RevStench what type of Ukrainian are you learning? The standard type they teach in books, or the mixed dialect that most people speak?

RevStench 2017-12-15 02:43:31

It's standard.

Deleted User 2017-12-15 02:44:49

For those that have learned a 'foreign language' without moving abroad and being immersed in it-- how did you do it?

Deleted User 2017-12-15 02:50:46

I can teach some basic Irish if you guys want

Deleted User 2017-12-15 02:51:06

Or at least translate some stuff at random and help with word pronunciation

this_that5553 2017-12-15 03:14:58

@Deleted User added to sticky

this_that5553 2017-12-15 03:15:28

@Deleted User I've gotten quite far with Michel Thomas and then writing/speaking with penpals from sites like Interpals

this_that5553 2017-12-15 03:21:32

Personally, I wouldn't waste time on Duolingo. only if bored.

I would always recommend Michel Thomas esque systems for a beginner to get up to speed. Then I'd say "go for it".

Granted, it's tougher with certain languages to do that, but yeah.

Deleted User 2017-12-15 03:37:28

Michel Thomas doesn't have an Irish course

this_that5553 2017-12-15 03:41:32

Ah yeah, there’s some online courses for Irish though. Sponsored by Ireland gov I think

Jacob 2017-12-19 04:55:07

I speak Polish and some Russian, in case anyone needs practice

Jacob 2017-12-19 04:55:32

Prestor John 2017-12-26 00:45:22

@Rick erste Dienstag im Januar?

this_that5553 2017-12-26 13:56:12

Damn, I need to learn Ukrainian / Russian

ophiuchus 2017-12-29 19:08:17

Anyone speak portuguese?

ophiuchus 2017-12-29 19:08:33

Kinda tempted to learn a little- I just like how it sounds

Deleted User 2017-12-29 19:08:39

I do

Deleted User 2017-12-29 19:09:18

Are you around a lot of Brazilians or something?

ThisIsChris 2017-12-29 19:44:34

@ophiuchus I speak some continental Portuguese

ophiuchus 2017-12-29 19:45:00

Not really no- just kinda interested

ophiuchus 2017-12-29 19:45:13

@ThisIsChris it's rather different than the brazilian iteration right?

ThisIsChris 2017-12-29 19:48:11

Yeah the pronounciation is different and a lot of word choices are different. I've heard it described like if a Scott, a Texan, and a South African were speaking in a room together, though I'm pretty sure it's further than that. The Portuguese people I knew would rather get a textbook in English to study from rather than one in Brazilian Portuguese, although cost and selection and wide-knowing of English in Portugal contributes to that too.

Deleted User 2017-12-29 19:55:04

Portuguese people hate the Brazilian way lol

Deleted User 2017-12-29 19:55:50

Plus there's a bunch of different accents within Brazil too, just like how the US has a bunch of different accents.

Anthony Sealy - MO 2018-01-09 02:25:13

Are we updating the language list still in case we need interpretation on anything we know who to ask? I can do the Español thing.

Anthony Sealy - MO 2018-01-09 02:29:06

They took German out of my highschool because of windmills of peace.

this_that5553 2018-01-10 03:20:06

@Anthony Sealy - MO it's all updated

Anthony Sealy - MO 2018-01-10 04:26:39

Thanks. I'm fluent, but anything for publication would need copy edited. Lived overseas a bit, so I learned the language, unlike our southern neighbors who come here.

Der Seeteufel - SD 2018-01-13 02:03:44

I found a free website for language learning that seems pretty good. www.duolingo.com

Der Seeteufel - SD 2018-01-13 02:05:01

I'm attempting to learn German.

Aeyannic_Order 2018-01-13 02:06:15

They have a cellphone app for free too @Der Seeteufel - SD

Der Seeteufel - SD 2018-01-13 02:07:32

Thanks I'll have to get that so I can practice when I'm on break at work.

this_that5553 2018-01-13 13:13:03

One of the most helpful things they added to Duolingo was chatting practice with a bot. It sounds silly but it’s awesome practice for a typing conversation

BryceB-ND 2018-01-15 20:53:09

Ich spreche Deutsch sehr gern und ich bin ziemlich gut mit der Sprache. Wenn sie mit der Sprache hilfe brauchen, dann koennen sir mir einen PM senden . 😅 👌

BryceB-ND 2018-01-15 20:56:06

Aber vielleicht, dass was ich gesagt hatte nicht perfekt ist, naja es ist Deutsch und die Grammatik ist immer ein Schlacht.

@Deleted User try pinging <@&387091385075105804> who are all people who have volunteered to be pinged on "academics" like language!

Anthony Sealy - MO 2018-03-19 09:42:36

@Wilhelm-OH#5377 Como quieres practicar? Por voz? No se si hay gente suficiente para una charla en grupo.

John O - 2018-03-29 22:25:04

@everyone One of the Florida boys created a server exclusively for languages.

Aleis⊕ccidentalis 2018-03-31 00:28:59

@StrawberryArmada I've been learning some Irish and Scots Gaelic through music and poetry. I can't converse in the language, or really form a sentence on my own, but have mostly memorized phrases. Listening to the music really helps with pronouncing the words.

Aleis⊕ccidentalis 2018-03-31 00:29:22

I made a massive playlist of Gaelic music if you would be interested in that.

SamanthaM 2018-04-20 01:38:18

@John O - Any way you could post a new link to the language server? Thank you.

wolfwood 2018-06-25 03:38:22

Any native German speakers? I've been learning on Duolingo for a while now, but the voices are computer generated. How exactly does one pronounce the word "milch" ?

Freiheit - CA 2018-06-25 06:33:30

wolfwood 2018-06-25 07:46:19

Is there any sort of "sh" sound?

wolfwood 2018-06-25 07:46:30

I have a feeling the robovoice is a little distorted.

Freiheit - CA 2018-06-25 07:47:24

Not on that word.

Freiheit - CA 2018-06-25 07:48:09

That I understand.

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:48:13

Pretty sure the ch in milch is like the one in ich and unlike the one in nacht

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:48:42

I think the best approximation of the sound is the h in the word “hue”

wolfwood 2018-06-25 07:48:46

OK, so there is an exhalation of air at the end?

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:48:48

Kind of catlike

Freiheit - CA 2018-06-25 07:49:34

I think High German Hoch Deutsch they may say it like an sh

wolfwood 2018-06-25 07:50:05

The male and female voices seem to differ a bit too on the pronunciation.

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:51:16

It’s a fricative, so there’s a puff of air. Like English F or sh

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:51:32

It’s not a stop, so there’s air.

wolfwood 2018-06-25 07:51:44

It's hard to say it 🙃

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:51:55

It takes some time for sure

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:52:24

In some dialects of English (including general American) it’s the same sound that’s in “human”

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:52:34

The h glide sort of thing

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:52:40

Not everyone says it like that

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:52:53

Most people do though

wolfwood 2018-06-25 07:53:06

I will practice! Thanks for the assist you two.

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:53:18

It’s much more toward the front of the mouth than the ch in noch

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:53:32

That one’s way in the back, this is at the alveolar ridge

ophiuchus 2018-06-25 07:53:39

SamanthaM 2018-10-08 15:51:04

@Valaska Are you starting out?

TMatthews 2018-10-13 04:15:19

I'm thinking of learning another language (either picking up Spanish where I left off in high school or learning German from scratch). Which would you recommend and is duolingo any good?

ophiuchus 2018-10-13 05:09:33

Duolingo is fine for vocabulary, it’s less good when it comes to internalizing grammar. There’s really no way around the latter without slogging through a reference grammar.

wolfwood 2018-10-26 05:11:55

Any fluent German speakers here? I have two sentences for translation; eBay seller can't understand what google translate spit out.

wolfwood 2018-10-26 05:12:20

"Can you please verify that there are no cracks in the plastic worm/reduction gear? My motor works but the gear is cracked and it prevents operation."

wolfwood 2018-10-26 05:12:44

it's called a worm gear, but also known as a reduction gear

Der Seeteufel - SD 2018-10-27 01:46:24

@BryceB-ND ☝️

BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 03:39:52

Koennen sie bitte sagen, wenn dieses Stück arbeitet? is a shitty way to ask but thats the best i can do atm

BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 03:44:13

Meinen Motor arbeitet aber der "Gang"(?) ist kaputt, also das ganzen Motor arbeitet nicht.

BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 03:44:26

I'm rusty but try that.

BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 03:45:30
BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 03:47:35

Idk the nouns for plastic worm/reduction gear lol so that's basically asking if the motor works, and then explaining your situation with your current motor

BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 03:49:16

Koennen sie bitte sagen, wenn dieses vorgelege arbeitet und auch, dass es nicht kaputt ist?

wolfwood 2018-10-27 05:09:54

OK I will try these, thank you!

wolfwood 2018-10-27 05:19:12

This guy in Germany has the only listing in the world for this exact part I need...but a cracked gear would be easy to miss. That's why I want him to check it first. It's hard to convey technical terms when they're not so readily learned in language programs.

BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 12:12:36

Yeah and believe me, technical terms can be ridiculous in

BryceB-ND 2018-10-27 12:12:39

Mick 2019-01-07 04:42:56

I've been all over the place with learning languages. Anyway, recently decided to pursue Spanish and it's just so discouraging how much leftism is injected into everything. I took it in hs but I am starting from the beginning and they're trying so hard to inject intersectionality every step of the way. Not just the picture posted, but every time they introduce a new adjective, ie iteligente, it's immediately introduced in the family section and every time it's associated with your sister or daughter. This may seem nitpicky, but you wonder why the intelligentsia is so far leftist, it's little things like this. Constant reinforcement of diversity even when approaching it from a normie lifestyle/perspective.

good evening folks,

I’ve been thinking about getting into freelance translation (English>Russian and vice versa) and I wanted to start in friendly circles. If anyone can point me towards an individual or organization that could use such a service, I’d love to know more.
