For something cheaper that I used on a 308, I have this USNV 441
gen 3 autogated tube it comes with an IR IR illuminator as well that attaches to the other side
not as versatile but you get a clean picture, and magnification

You don't need a gunsmithing license to do anything... Even when you go to a school for you, you get a certificate of completion of the course to show you've taken initiative to potentially start a career or side gig as a gunsmith....
