not as great as 4 but still pretty good

D&D was smart to go with 5e

Something like AToW or Shadowrun is better suited to high complexity than D&D was and they hit a sweet spot here with ease to pick up while still keeping the core mechanics basically intact

The only real 'dumbed down' mechanic in 5e is flanking in combat, which is actually a great change that speeds encounters up

Mage the Awakening was pretty easy to pick up

5e was the only one I played with actual people and not as a crpg (mostly 3.5 TToEE there)

Some of the simplifications were eeeeeeeh

It was nice meeting new people, but 4th was just a computer RPG played with paper.

nah 4th ed was just a combat simulater. it may have been the begining of the direction however it wasnt the net result

3rd edition made miniatures almost necessary, before which we hardly used miniatures unless to show party order or the like.

5th is a blend of 3rd /3.5 and 4th with a bit of 1st/2nd for seasoning.

Unfortunately, I haven't done any decent roleplaying for the past few years. Just some Call of Cthulhu and Numenera demos for Free RPG Day.

5th doesnt have "meaningful decisions" or consequences for that matter

Pathfinder started out good but ran into the same problem with 3rd and all the splat books.

nah, i have them all and I use Herolabs with them all in it.
My rules (setting dependant for tech race ect) is if its 1st party do it UNLESS it changes your source of damage from Str

example being the Guided enchant is a 3.5 rules they pasted over then went "oops that shouldnt be in the game"

although ive not really played with the standard setting - I always build my own.
