I'd have to disagree on the interpretation of what he was saying. He's not saying (or admitting) his group "_is_ a joke." He said it "_began_ as a joke."

Which, truth be told, that's how a lot of things start out...and end up becoming something serious and important. I can actually picture what he was trying to say happened. "A few guys sitting around, possibly watching sportsball or w/e...having some beers and smashing the empty cans on their foreheads. And saying, "YA! We're PROUD! And we're BOYS! We're the Proud Boys! YA MAN!" /chug.

Okay...it was fun, and a joke at that time. But it grew into something important to them, and quite frankly, hundreds more people...and they take it seriously now.
