Medieval 2 didn't have female generals, but the did have Princesses that served as agents for a faction, which you could use as diplomats and to secure royal marriages with generals of your faction, or an allied one. Which makes sense for the period, as women had very few positions of power.
In Empire Total War, and Napoleon (Perhaps) the leader of a country could end up being a woman, by having a queen on the throne
In shogun 2 there were female warrior units that acted as garrison and there were also female agents you could use
So it's not a "They're putting women in my total war!" sort of thing, they've always been there. Simply CA decided to shed some light on the role of women in history
