If he wasn't the white guy why would he be in here <:teehee:381917632359563264>

2018-10-22 04:54:18 UTC

@ophiuchus is that actually a good idea?

2018-10-22 04:55:01 UTC

@Jacob a lot of people do it because most of the time VIX slowly declines, and then once in a while it jumps up quickly and their accounts blow up

2018-10-22 04:56:28 UTC

Although the "normal" people who do it usually short VXX or buy UVXY (an inverse ETF)

2018-10-22 04:56:37 UTC

You know...VIX backward is 14

2018-10-22 04:56:51 UTC

What's VIX

2018-10-22 04:57:04 UTC

Volatility index

2018-10-22 04:57:12 UTC

I think

2018-10-22 04:57:41 UTC

@fgtveassassin VIX is "Volatility Index", it's a number based the cost of leverage in certain leveraged stock instruments

2018-10-22 04:58:03 UTC

when stocks start to move around a lot at once, they're said to be "volatile" so that index goes up

2018-10-22 04:58:06 UTC

That's too big brained for me right now

2018-10-22 04:58:35 UTC

I was thinking vapor rubs.

2018-10-22 04:59:20 UTC

Yeah for people who don't like thinking about investing it's enough to put all your money in a broad based market index fund and never think about it for a long time. That's a common suggestion from guys like Warren Buffet anyway

2018-10-22 04:59:40 UTC

I don't follow that advice, for better or worse

2018-10-22 04:59:47 UTC

I remember I bought VIX when I was 18 and dumb because I KNEW the stock market was about to crash

2018-10-22 04:59:55 UTC

Owning a VIX ETF is a good hedge since it’s got like an -0.8 correlation with SPY

2018-10-22 05:00:01 UTC

Notice I said hedge

2018-10-22 05:00:23 UTC

This is for diminishing risk, if the market is doing well, as it has been, it’s going to lose money

2018-10-22 05:00:36 UTC

Expect it in the long haul to lose money

2018-10-22 05:00:57 UTC

Is there a way I can find top secret information on when the Jews are going to crash the market?

2018-10-22 05:01:04 UTC

Yeah if you want to "hedge" spy isn't it usually just better to hold less of it? for normal retail investors?

2018-10-22 05:01:14 UTC

Yeah the fed open market committee meets pretty regularly

2018-10-22 05:01:54 UTC

IE should all buy vix and find a way to crash the market

2018-10-22 05:01:59 UTC

@ThisIsChris for sure. I’m an alternatives analyst at my school’s investment fund, so a lot of what I do is mitigating risk and hedging

2018-10-22 05:02:16 UTC

@ophiuchus that's really cool

2018-10-22 05:02:19 UTC

IE should have its own value investment fund

2018-10-22 05:02:22 UTC

surely 800 of us can do it?

2018-10-22 05:02:30 UTC

IE having the ability to crash the market... oy vey

2018-10-22 05:02:37 UTC

There's a MAGA ETF

2018-10-22 05:02:39 UTC

@ophiuchus do you know about weather derivatives? I was looking into it for a long time but I don't think retail people can trade them

2018-10-22 05:03:13 UTC

I know what they are but I have very little (none) experience with them

2018-10-22 05:03:51 UTC

As part of our IPS, we’re only allowed to long things as well. Which is frustrating.

2018-10-22 05:04:06 UTC

What's an IPS?

2018-10-22 05:04:12 UTC

Investor policy statement

2018-10-22 05:04:24 UTC

@Jacob Yeah I made money off it!

2018-10-22 05:04:29 UTC

@ophiuchus can you long inverse ETFs?

2018-10-22 05:04:35 UTC

Yes

2018-10-22 05:04:36 UTC

It was nice for awhile

2018-10-22 05:04:38 UTC

And do
