The trade war is certainly not good for the American economy

The US has transitioned to a services-based economy. The cost of production in America is higher than in manufacturing-based economies. Even if we save 1000 job in tire manufacturing or whatever, the price of tires will increase significantly which means that either all wages in all industries will have to increase (causing excess inflation) or Americans will not buy tires (or cars) anymore.

@Fane tariffs + national investment in the protected industries would actually be good for whichever industries are involved, but you want to do it for secondary and tertiary industries, not primary/raw resource ones... like trump is doing with steel. why? because you dont want to raise the price of basic inputs for every other company since higher production costs has a deleterious effect on production
