I'm a Social Democrat... that puts me under Capitalist and socialist right?

2019-07-25 01:35:21 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

What do you all think about the growing role of geoeconomics and how the US mostly refuses to use or even consider it?

I got 3.13 (Economic), -4.21 (Social)

So I'm a right-wing libertarian... I never considered myself right-wing tbh

lol

2019-07-25 02:33:06 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Why not? China and Russia for example extend their financial arms more often than their military ones.

2019-07-25 02:33:48 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

China's navy is... lackluster to say the least but the US still considers it a major threat does it not?

2019-07-25 02:39:50 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

What about the one belt one road?

2019-07-25 02:44:44 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

I have to sleep

2019-07-25 02:44:49 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Talk about this tomorrow

2019-07-25 12:57:07 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Providing more jobs doesn't necessarily mean providing good-paying jobs. What's the point of being paid $5 an hour when that can barely get you anything. If anything, that just means the government has to tax businesses and the rich higher to maintain welfare (assuming welfare remains constant in this scenario)

2019-07-25 12:57:54 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

That isn't necessarily always true. Look at HK for example.

2019-07-25 12:58:14 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Lemme pull up some stats

2019-07-25 13:00:21 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

The same stats are also supported in the BBC docuseries "World's Biggest Cities"

2019-07-25 13:00:29 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

"200,000 people in Hong Kong living in such tiny subdivided units, some so small that a person cannot even fully stretch out their legs."

2019-07-25 13:02:07 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #trump]

Trump also does meaningless things which weaken the US' position domestically and abroad

2019-07-25 13:04:01 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Not exactly. If the minimum wage is not adequate enough to buy housing, the price of said housing won't just go down to suit the needs of these workers.

2019-07-25 13:04:29 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Hong Kong has a $4.8 minimum wage btw

2019-07-25 13:05:52 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

My point is that this doesn't apply to many large cities and metro areas

2019-07-25 13:07:02 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Just wanted to ask, is the China statistics of the mainland or the mainland+HK?

2019-07-25 13:08:39 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Hong Kong is not China... well not for that website

2019-07-25 13:09:38 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

In HK?

2019-07-25 13:12:44 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Yes, but what about that <1%. The government still has to subsidize their living through welfare.

2019-07-25 13:13:25 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

@Deleted User idek anymore

2019-07-25 13:14:01 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

@Mr1Gonzalez Not all people earning minimum wage by the latest iPhone. Especially those whom have a family

2019-07-25 13:14:28 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

@chuckayy Boris' Brexit is leaving the EU without a deal if he can't reach a solution. That's bad for everyone

2019-07-25 13:15:08 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Globally or US?

2019-07-25 13:15:35 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

@Deleted User Exactly.

2019-07-25 13:16:59 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

There are old iPhones. I know friends' parents who use iPhone 6's and 7's (despite living in a very high-income area)

2019-07-25 13:17:52 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

@Deleted User MS analysts predict that like the pound's value will be the same as USD if there's a no deal Brexit

2019-07-25 13:18:24 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

350 million in US?

2019-07-25 13:19:01 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

No but you said 350 million in US...

2019-07-25 13:19:25 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Oh...

2019-07-25 13:19:25 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

nvm

2019-07-25 13:19:27 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

I get it

2019-07-25 13:19:29 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Whoops

2019-07-25 13:19:44 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

"Up to" is a wide range.

2019-07-25 13:20:03 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

That's like saying a lot of Americans have computers or PCs up to 5k.

2019-07-25 13:20:33 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

We must eradicate the mindset that all people who make minimum wage vape and do drugs and stuff

2019-07-25 13:21:03 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

And I really doubt that many people making minimum wage go to Disneyland (except maybe the people who work at Disneyland for minimum wage)

2019-07-25 13:21:20 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Again, why would anyone go to the middle of the desert when they have work (and often children)

2019-07-25 13:21:33 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

These examples are rare cases tho

2019-07-25 13:22:11 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

But I really doubt that you could spend $7.25 and live a good life with 1 or 2 dependents

2019-07-25 13:23:09 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

But the people at the bottom should have basic necessities

2019-07-25 13:23:28 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Most is not all. How about the people who live in the inner city and have terrible schools?

2019-07-25 13:23:32 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

That's not opportunity!

2019-07-25 13:24:05 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Their schooling is practically non-existent

2019-07-25 13:24:28 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

They have not enough books, outdated books, not many arts or language or music programs, etc.

2019-07-25 13:24:29 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

K

2019-07-25 13:24:39 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Y not?

2019-07-25 13:25:20 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

If they don't have the education, how are they gonna take part in extracurriculars or idk get a good score on the SATs/ACTs?

2019-07-25 13:25:35 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

If schools don't have extracurriculars, they can't do them

2019-07-25 13:25:52 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Well why is that only the rich get to go to Harvard?

2019-07-25 13:26:06 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

Tell me then. Why do you believe education should be limited?

2019-07-25 13:26:59 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

The best education is supposed to be for the best students, not the richest students

2019-07-25 13:27:08 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

If there is corruption, then why don't we try to eradicate it?

2019-07-25 13:27:18 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

It'll take time and effort, but it's not impossible

2019-07-25 13:27:29 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

2019-07-25 13:27:56 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #trump]

Trump's behavior towards its NATO allies

2019-07-25 14:54:05 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #trump]

The trade war is certainly not good for the American economy

2019-07-25 14:55:52 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #trump]

The US has transitioned to a services-based economy. The cost of production in America is higher than in manufacturing-based economies. Even if we save 1000 job in tire manufacturing or whatever, the price of tires will increase significantly which means that either all wages in all industries will have to increase (causing excess inflation) or Americans will not buy tires (or cars) anymore.

@Deleted User This can sometimes be true (see Deng Xiaoping and Lee Kuan Yew) but it has a very real possibility of going rogue and killing all the progress (see Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin).

I'd rather progress slowly but not have all my progress destroyed bc of one idiot

70 million actually

Deadliest tyrant in history

And Mao didn't want to destroy his people. He wanted industrialization but having farmers make metals in their backyard might seem ridiculous today but Mao thought it could work

Actual communism could never work in a society greater than 10k people

2019-07-26 00:09:54 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #trump]

Tariffs are not always bad but mostly they are.

2019-07-26 01:28:04 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #trump]

@Green Syndicalism K sry I was in the middle of doing something else at that same. In hindsight, it was a bs post. But what you are suggesting is a large-scale protectionist economy within America. That helps absolutely no one, even the industries involved in the long run. China helps its own industries, sure, but China is not America. The US' tariffs are not happening in a static world; they are happening in tandem with retaliatory tariffs (by China and other trading partners) which make US' exports uncompetitive. Even if the US starts helping out all its industries, they will eventually look for foreign markets. You are simply stifling their economic freedom. A protectionist economy is a globalized world does not work.

2019-07-26 01:33:20 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

@Shockwave I disagree. I'd say between it'd happen in the 2021 fiscal year. The US economy is not regressing. I haven't paid attention to recent manufacturing or unemployment data since around last quarter or so, but from the looks of the stock market, the US is headed into another peak which ends in a correction. After that, I might agree that a stagnation could take hold however I doubt the economy will suddenly go into a tailspin (unless some far-left person wins the Presidency).

2019-07-27 15:39:52 UTC [NEWS and POLITICS #economic-issues]

The US would ultimately win but at the cost of trillions
