@Reaps Huh, never thought about the shot trap issue on the Merkava. They've got a lot of stuff crammed into that thing and a rear turret placement, so I'd guess they're trying to keep a high slope for the front turret and hull faces to maximize armor. I think their main threat is infantry AT weapons, so ricochets from AP are I guess not that big of a concern.
Suppose it's a reflection of their priorities and perceived threats.
