having google doesnt mean you have knowledge
Having knowledge doesn't mean your knowledge is right.
lol
And Knowledge isn't wisdom
MY GOD hes a retard i am wasting time
this can relate to ethics
on my original point
I once was stuck in a debate with a friend for about an hour until she stopped and asked how I defined a single term. Once she heard how I define that one term, no mater how passionate she was, I would not except her point of view just based on the definition. As such she agreed that according to how I defined the term, she was wrong, however if we used her definition... then there would be room to talk.
Basically, this. Agreed-upon definitions are important if you're going to properly challenge your own ideas against someone else's - arguably the entire point of Debate. I've found that A LOT of disagreements come down to different definitions of a commonly used word within an argument. That's why establishing definitions 'looked up on google' from institutionally recognized Dictionaries is important, and why what may appear to be a tangential discussion on those definitions might be an important challenge to held beliefs in and of itself.
If someone argues with an SJW about what's racist and what's not, if one of them is using 'Power plus Prejudice' as their definition of Racism, then no real ground can be made to strengthen an argument.
Which is why I trap them with "Bigot"
Until they redefine that word, too...
For now it is a bear trap of a term
When you control language, you control thought.
I knew I'd seen that quote somewhere.
```โControl language and you control thought; control thought and you control action; control action and you control the world.โ```
โ Peter Kreeft
virยทtue sigยทnalยทing
noun
the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue.
"it's noticeable how often virtue signaling consists of saying you hate things"
For some reason I thought it was 1984. Although that was definitely a theme in it...
wewlad. that's a messy google search
how about this
Dang it I can't put the meme Quote
Jesus, I need to read ~~more~~ some Carlin.
i am sorry for being agressive and insultive
i thought philisophy was comong knowledge in the us and canada
like ,highschool knowledge
apparently only in private schools
and not all of them
i understand know your positions on the matter
My mother was a public school teacher, the quote I heard most often heard was "Look it up!" So I am mostly a self taught creature
philosophy means the love of wisdom, the search of knowledge and reason. science means knowledge
thats the basic directe definition
definitions change from country to country
The point I was making was that Science is more of a philosophy than the other way around.
That's the most charitable stance on it in accordance to what you were saying
I personally view them as twin disciplines.
Debate being the philosophical equivalent to experimentation
They both have common tools, logic and reason.
But philosophical principles can be opposed to one another and still equally right.
Philosophy is measured more in terms of strength, than in terms of right or wrong - as science is. And a solid argument contains both science AND philosophy, knowledge AND wisdom.
The reason a scientist would be a 'philosopher first', would be because that knowledge is useless without the wisdom to utilize it, and the wisdom to seek knowledge would be the driving force behind scientific endeavor.
By all means, you can point out where you disagree with that - You might convince me that Science is a Philosophy, but I believe the evidence that Philosophy is a Science is weak to non-existent. (Also, the definitions I defaulted to were from from a centuries-standing British University)
(Since Tim started using the Oxford English Dictionary for his definitions, I've started using that as my standard as well, even if I may disagree with them on commas and the spelling of the word Pheonix.)
They can't even spell aluminum right
I have had to resort to using old physical dictionaries to look stuff up definitions for things like this.
You mean Aluminium
I prefer that pronunciation, actually.
It flows easier.
I have to add a pause at the end of saying Aluminum
No expects you to actatually throw a book at them
Ignore the scene before the relevant quote
Requires previous scenes to make sense.
Also watch the whole thing. Scroobius Pip is awesome.
Sat in a van with a co-worker and his Daughter while waiting for the others to show up for a team building event, the duaghter got snarky so I warned her... He told me to do it. She didn't think i would, and then I pegged her in the face with a pocket sized note book.
Was the co-worker okay with it afterwards? ๐
He was laughing, he had seen the book in my hand before as well
i think they should start teaching philisophy in the us and canada
obligatory for middle and high school
They don't even teach the things they teach effectively. There's not much worse than poor, self-certain philosophy.
philisophy widens the perception of the young ones
they will understand science an the world better
Not if the teacher's just using the opportunity to indoctrinate them into their own philosophy.
Which is absolutely likely to happen.
It happens in University all the time.
education in the us and canada has failed
Agreed.
ive heard that even the open education in mexico has higher standards
There are people in my own generation that think that Socialism might actually work.
Lets be honest, the powers that be don't want to teach critical thinking skills to the young. They want students to be spoon fed what to think
^ ^ ^
yet, the powers that be import brains from places where they still teach those skills
It's far more valuable, and far easier to work with, for a population to just agree with the loudest voice.
cookie cutter kids.
colleges are now like jungle gyms
mental jungle gyms
like climb where ever
be what ever, doesnt matter if is real or not theres foam everywhere
I use to have the job of telling those that outrank me when they are full of shit... I was considered a critical staff member in the army
Well, for starters, College isn't about learning to think for yourself
Tim's basically right, School in general is designed to train you to be an employee
And not an Employer.
I mean, there are some professions that are employable without employers
but most doctors wind up working for a hospital or a clinic
Most lawyers wind up working under a partnership
Engineers wind up working for a firm, same with Architects.
In a sense, Corporatism crushes Exceptionalism.
And what we're headed towards seems to either be more corporatism, or a kneejerk Socialism.
Authoritative voices need to be drowned out by individualistic ones, but the only way to do that is to get more people to think for themselves
but that's haaaaard.
Lighter topic: States that don't have a Whataburger (as per the Corpus Christi chain, not the hyphenated imposter) are not worth visiting. Discuss.
Then what states besides TX are there?
Exactly
It's not actually true education teaches you to be an employee. It does have a very regimented flair, but there's a move in higher ed to push entrepreneurship.
Mostly, if anything, education is becoming about in-culturing certain specific values granting status.
"High school dropout" is not something people say with pride.
Unless they are pretty successful already.
For contrast, say "Ivy league graduate" and suddenly you get lots of inquiries.
But most of what happens in education these days isn't independent thought.
college used to mean you either had connections, or a worth ethic and a high intellect. Then we decided EVERYONE needed to be a college grad and now its the new high school diploma.
But then what is High school for then and now?
Here's a list of places that are worth visiting
