Potential positive in that if you reduce the price of something, you can buy more of it for the same money.
A society that has more nurses, home care workers, physiotherapists, primary school teachers, daycare workers, etc, is probably a pretty good society.
Education is gonna fade, it doesn't need a human touch
Assuming you can keep those people from hating their lives due to oppressive poverty.
you can get homeschooling for that
Kids in front of screens aren't going to learn shit you want them to learn.
That's another thing.
If wages are really low, you might see stay-at-home parenting become competitive (assuming one parent has a tech job).
Like why should a software engineer making half a million bucks have their partner wiping old people's bums for a living making $20k.
exactly
so with that, comes less need for primary schooling
Only for those who have one parent making sufficient moeny.
Two people making $20k aren't going to be able to afford to have one stay at home.
At least in the current market paradigm. We're going to have to figure something out that augments the free market in order to bring about a societal structure that we can bear.
space colonisation / mining
Doesn't help. Who owns the capital?
companies
And the couple scraping by on $40k combined income ain't going to be holding much stock.
much like how the family of military people get full cover for everything, cuz those soldiers lay their lives on the line,
You will get companies that pay for hazard pay in space etc good money
Military people get less than you'd think, and only because governments can print money.
Remember: we're thinking about a world in which human labor is even cheaper than now.
Companies will have market power.
They can fuck whoever they want for whatever they want.
My dad got really good money and amazing benefits
governments can't just print money, that will destroy the currency
It'll be a permanent employer's market.
What's the US deficit again?
the deficit it owes itself you mean?
if it could print money like that, it wouldn't have a deficit
the whole reason there IS a deficit is cuz the government CAN'T just print money to cover costs
and that is WHY those military people get less, because the government can't afford it
but if a company can earn Trillions by strip-mining asteroids, its not gonna care about racking out a few extra million for hazard pay
Look into Khan's education system, that will be the future
I think talking about strip-mining asteroids is deflecting from the problem we're facing in the near future.
Sci-fi hand-waving.
i'll grant you the term is far fetched,
That doesn't take away the future of economy after labor jobs are automated, lies in the stars
If anyone is freaking out about automated Jobs the solution or at least a big part of it is quite simple
Or in war
90% of the labor people aren't fit for higher education,
They need simple jobs
so either give them a drill or a gun
Shorter work weeks
This whole conversation is something that should be happening as part of the national political dialogue. Instead we get "free healthcare, free university, free housing, free this, free that".
Thats because its more appealing
"free"
"You get another job" sounds awful compared to
"You get free housing and education"
thats why the Universal Basic Income is such a non-debate
people all talk about it
No one debates about the truth which is that its unsustainable
its all just wishful thinking to sway the guillible masses
Certainly even if necessary the conditions are way off from now
UBI can't work, but I think negative income tax is worth exploring.
dafuq is negative income tax?
Work is still required; it's just that your income is augmented.
so just higher wages?
Or cutting the tax you have to pay to SS?
Let's say that $35k is deemed subsistence income, and that you have a labor income of $25k. You would receive monthly tax credits totaling $10k.
Rather negative income would probably take for SS then givre you money from a different pool
SS is a different beast.
It shouldn't exist.
Ponzi scheme.
so subsidiaries?
Subsidies?
yes
I guess.
English not my 1st Language ๐
Is Federal government funding this?
Ideally this would be state level.
But I don't know if that would work.
Subsidies don't work, the netherlands have them,
The people become convinced they're entitled to the money, as a bonus
And then complain their regular income is too low, completely forgetting they're getting extra money already
I don't know if any of this would work.
Do you offer this to people who choose to live in expensive areas?
The subsistence level wouldn't really permit them to survive there, but sure.
This isn't meant to insulate people from bad decisions.
I don't know if this would work, but I think it would be a better solution than UBI or the free market forcing a return to feudalism.
free market wouldn't create feudalism
There's nothing about a free market that requires a middle class.
Well if they would be able to comfortably live somewhere cheaper at 25k what's to stop them from spending an extra 10k just to have a more expesive lifestyle, ie. Living in the city
you generate the middle class, by having more work than workers
The work is automated.
so companies are forced to pay more for the better people
There isn't more work than workers.
hence my two solutions,
Space colonisation
Warfare
You either find them a new place to work labor-ish
Or you have them kill each other
"Space colonization" isn't a solution. It's magic as far as this conversation is concerned.
"A wizard did it" basically.
you know, i had that argument used against me when places like Patreon started
and youtube monetization
"No one will pay for that"
How's that doing these days.
ask Tim, he seems to be holding on well enough
"well enough" in that he's not starving. I don't think Tim is thriving.
How much travel is the guy doing these days?
How much is there to travel TO these days?
Tim already said he wont go to extremist rallies, only to neutral ones
or Sargon, he's not going anywhere, and earning enough
Tim makes really good money from what I understand
and dozens of famous pundits etc
granted the entry market is shrinking for YT and Punditry
Extra money goes to improving his content
So this justifies faith in space colonization solving economic problems that will happen in our lifetimes....
