Like, every cyberpunk dystopia is based off of reality

2018-10-20 19:52:36 UTC

@Grenade123
This is a cautionary tale fiction book compared to real world dictatorships in the same sense that the boy who cried wolf is a cautionary tale for losing trust & how valuable it is

2018-10-20 19:52:39 UTC

well i can go into history and give you example after example after example

2018-10-20 19:52:40 UTC

it's grounded in reality

2018-10-20 19:52:49 UTC

where the same thing happened over and over again

2018-10-20 19:53:16 UTC

we just havent really seen it in about 65 years or so

2018-10-20 19:53:25 UTC

it's a pattern that's purposefully metaphorical and fictional in order to make sure that it can be universally appplicable, it's the patterns that matter, not the exemplified dictatorship itself

2018-10-20 19:53:28 UTC

not at this scale at least

2018-10-20 19:53:29 UTC

@CreativeRealms 1984's INGSOC is a kenundrum, a product of doublethink, officially it's socialist, but at the same time, despises socialism as the concept, and all it's principles, it has anti socialist policies while calling itself that

2018-10-20 19:53:45 UTC

Interpreting history is tricky, though

2018-10-20 19:53:57 UTC

A lot depends on what theory you use to filter it

2018-10-20 19:53:57 UTC

Satanic panic

2018-10-20 19:54:15 UTC

"every man on the corner is a child abductor 90's"

2018-10-20 19:54:19 UTC

witch hunts

2018-10-20 19:54:30 UTC

Mcarthyism as well

2018-10-20 19:54:31 UTC

Two people subscribing to different theories can both claim that the same historical event vindicates their theory

2018-10-20 19:54:36 UTC

yeah that

2018-10-20 19:54:51 UTC

we can keep going further back, it just keeps coming back

2018-10-20 19:54:54 UTC

the nazi's

2018-10-20 19:55:17 UTC

@velvitonator a person looks at a number from the right saying it's a 6
the other person on the left of the number says it's a 9
they will both insist theirs is the right perspective

2018-10-20 19:55:28 UTC

point is that its about authoritarianism

2018-10-20 19:55:41 UTC

and we've had that since probably the stone age

2018-10-20 19:55:45 UTC

exactly

2018-10-20 19:56:08 UTC

the story of 1984 is not the relevant part or the one needing to be compared

2018-10-20 19:56:15 UTC

its the tactics and methods

2018-10-20 19:56:24 UTC

It's just a matter of time and effort that people realize Gamergate was evidence that SJWs were (and are) cancerous.

2018-10-20 19:56:48 UTC

Just like it was a matter of time and effort to out Carlos Mencia as a joke thief.

2018-10-20 19:58:43 UTC

they're attacking meritorious aspects of society first

2018-10-20 19:58:45 UTC

namely gaming

2018-10-20 19:59:26 UTC

gaming is the ultimate meritocracy, it requires reflexes, concentration, it requires patience, will, wits, strategy & generally skill

2018-10-20 19:59:36 UTC

you either have that or you don't

2018-10-20 19:59:41 UTC

there's no feigning skill

2018-10-20 20:00:11 UTC

competing is i think more broadly relevant

2018-10-20 20:00:24 UTC

they detest that because it goes against the "everyone works the same effort, those who think differently are just spreading capitalist propaganda, there's no such thing as passion"

2018-10-20 20:00:30 UTC

narrative

2018-10-20 20:00:52 UTC

@tritrium I get what you're saying, but I'd caution you about trying to use fiction to bolster. For rhetorical purposes, sure, but I saw a lot of people on the far left bolstering their points with stuff like "REMEMBER THAT MARVEL MOVIE!?" as if that was an argument

2018-10-20 20:00:57 UTC

you can't cheat against a situation where 2 are placed at the same capability & your skill decides the winner

2018-10-20 20:01:06 UTC

yeah but im not using fiction

2018-10-20 20:01:16 UTC

they DETEST that

2018-10-20 20:01:30 UTC

what do you, as a tyrant do if you want to take over a society?

2018-10-20 20:01:39 UTC

you first start with 3 things
