If e.g. 1984 seems to reflect reality well, you heed it as a warning
If it seems off the mark, it's not credible
So it's ultimately begging the question
Like, every cyberpunk dystopia is based off of reality
@Grenade123
This is a cautionary tale fiction book compared to real world dictatorships in the same sense that the boy who cried wolf is a cautionary tale for losing trust & how valuable it is
well i can go into history and give you example after example after example
it's grounded in reality
where the same thing happened over and over again
we just havent really seen it in about 65 years or so
it's a pattern that's purposefully metaphorical and fictional in order to make sure that it can be universally appplicable, it's the patterns that matter, not the exemplified dictatorship itself
not at this scale at least
@CreativeRealms 1984's INGSOC is a kenundrum, a product of doublethink, officially it's socialist, but at the same time, despises socialism as the concept, and all it's principles, it has anti socialist policies while calling itself that
Interpreting history is tricky, though
A lot depends on what theory you use to filter it
Satanic panic
"every man on the corner is a child abductor 90's"
witch hunts
Mcarthyism as well
Two people subscribing to different theories can both claim that the same historical event vindicates their theory
yeah that
the nazi's
@velvitonator a person looks at a number from the right saying it's a 6
the other person on the left of the number says it's a 9
they will both insist theirs is the right perspective
point is that its about authoritarianism
and we've had that since probably the stone age
exactly
the story of 1984 is not the relevant part or the one needing to be compared
its the tactics and methods
It's just a matter of time and effort that people realize Gamergate was evidence that SJWs were (and are) cancerous.
Just like it was a matter of time and effort to out Carlos Mencia as a joke thief.
they're attacking meritorious aspects of society first
namely gaming
gaming is the ultimate meritocracy, it requires reflexes, concentration, it requires patience, will, wits, strategy & generally skill
you either have that or you don't
there's no feigning skill
competing is i think more broadly relevant
they detest that because it goes against the "everyone works the same effort, those who think differently are just spreading capitalist propaganda, there's no such thing as passion"
narrative
@tritrium I get what you're saying, but I'd caution you about trying to use fiction to bolster. For rhetorical purposes, sure, but I saw a lot of people on the far left bolstering their points with stuff like "REMEMBER THAT MARVEL MOVIE!?" as if that was an argument
you can't cheat against a situation where 2 are placed at the same capability & your skill decides the winner
yeah but im not using fiction
