2019-09-30 04:31:18 UTC

imagine if your dentist operated on microtransactions

2019-09-30 04:31:36 UTC

That doesn't match my description.

2019-09-30 04:31:50 UTC

Like your gender

2019-09-30 04:31:50 UTC

why not think of them as 'otherwordly beings' that fuck with people, because we dont know what exactly the cause of certain occurrences are exactly

2019-09-30 04:31:51 UTC

@Cryosite See what I mean? Idiot

2019-09-30 04:32:06 UTC

rood words

2019-09-30 04:33:52 UTC

if we're just going to say 'ive never sensed any physical evidence that a thing is as real as a tree is' thats the conversation about the literal

2019-09-30 04:33:57 UTC

just as bad as the bible thumpers

2019-09-30 04:34:14 UTC

laws arent real

2019-09-30 04:34:25 UTC

ideas arent real

2019-09-30 04:34:29 UTC

*sigh*

2019-09-30 04:34:30 UTC

Autism

2019-09-30 04:34:39 UTC

only how people behave knowing they are ideas

2019-09-30 04:34:45 UTC

and so we act like theyre real things

2019-09-30 04:35:03 UTC

unless you want to point to a book and say 'see, laws are real'

2019-09-30 04:35:07 UTC

But noone cares about that

2019-09-30 04:35:13 UTC

i cant touch the laws

2019-09-30 04:35:15 UTC

like a tree

2019-09-30 04:35:19 UTC

Literally noone

2019-09-30 04:35:33 UTC

Anyway. Ultimately the conversation goes back and forth a few times like this.

Empiricism and rationalism both have good points. I lean well into empiricism. Most theists go pretty hard into rationalism, if they're at all intelligent.

2019-09-30 04:35:43 UTC

The worry is the people that DO think it's literal and why.

2019-09-30 04:36:02 UTC

its not either or

2019-09-30 04:36:14 UTC

Both have things to offer to good conversation, but the conflicts between them generate impasse at times.

2019-09-30 04:36:20 UTC

empirically speaking, capitalism is the better way to behave as if its the truth

2019-09-30 04:36:30 UTC

just like drinking and eating is 'the truth'

2019-09-30 04:36:45 UTC

but capitalism isnt real, only people acting as if it is

2019-09-30 04:37:04 UTC

and yeah, yourd be pretty stupid to ignore empirical evidence

2019-09-30 04:37:21 UTC

but you cant empirically prove a concept or an idea

2019-09-30 04:37:23 UTC

And stupid to ignore rationalism entirely.

2019-09-30 04:39:13 UTC

Still can’t prove a negative🤷‍♂️

2019-09-30 04:39:15 UTC

always the atheists problem is they see noahs arc and think its not true and therefore should be disregarded, instead of looking at it like a helpful story

2019-09-30 04:39:32 UTC

@Scale_e The lack thereof is why I'm 100% certain

2019-09-30 04:39:58 UTC

We were 100% certain the earth was flat.

2019-09-30 04:40:20 UTC

@Scale_e Cool, don't care.

2019-09-30 04:40:32 UTC

fiction shouldnt exist at all, and no one should imitate fiction, if we're just going to say that if it isnt physical it should be ignored

2019-09-30 04:40:37 UTC

When I have enough evidence I'll believe otherwise.

2019-09-30 04:40:48 UTC

yet we imitate fiction all the time and we love stories that are entirely fictional

2019-09-30 04:41:19 UTC

I forget whom it was Hitchens was quoting, but he gave his own take on an older concept that includes rationalism and empiricism. Basically, claims require evidence. Fantastic claims require fantastic evidence. Mediocre claims require only mediocre evidence.

One can believe in dogs on little evidence. It's not quite faith.

One can believe in gods, but it takes a lot of evidence. That evidence is lacking, and faith is how folks make up the deficit.

2019-09-30 04:41:20 UTC

Are you 100% reality exists behind you?
Why? You don’t have eyes in the back of your head to observe it.

2019-09-30 04:41:54 UTC

except there is evidence
