Specifically because in a self defense case if your defense includes "well I just meant to scare him off" or "I wasnt trying to kill him" then its going to go into the "you arent really justified in using your gun if the threat to life and limb wasnt great enough to warrant deadly force"
Firearm self defense is a very all or nothing area of law
