My latest ancestor to the states came in 1844

2018-11-22 22:07:24 UTC

He was German

2018-11-22 22:07:33 UTC

@Jacob I think there are two sides to that coin

2018-11-22 22:07:49 UTC

The settlers weren't so much people who couldn't make it, but people who were willing to go on a multi month voyage and build something new

2018-11-22 22:08:01 UTC

Fair enough.

2018-11-22 22:08:05 UTC

My ancestors were straight up crazy fanatics

2018-11-22 22:08:10 UTC

So there's that

2018-11-22 22:08:17 UTC

Religious fanatics?

2018-11-22 22:08:25 UTC

Yeah

2018-11-22 22:08:35 UTC

Based

2018-11-22 22:09:00 UTC

I'm not sure. I think puritanism just morphed into SJWism

2018-11-22 22:09:16 UTC

There's two sides in the sense that immigrants tend to be either very high skilled or very low skilled. The low skill people leave since they can't make it in their own country, and the high skill people leave since they have marketable skills that can make them massive money in the US. The middle people don't really have much reason to leave.

2018-11-22 22:09:42 UTC

Who here /descendant of heartland farmers/

2018-11-22 22:09:50 UTC

Gotta baste this bird real quick squirt squirt

2018-11-22 22:09:58 UTC

I think it's more of a personality thing. Like "F my family dude I'm leaving" which explains why Americans are so itinerant.

2018-11-22 22:10:08 UTC

Who else mayflower gang?

2018-11-22 22:10:19 UTC

Real question is who else here is Magna Carta barons gang

2018-11-22 22:10:58 UTC

Anyway, there's a lot of differences between settlers and immigrants of today. It took some really high agency to just grab what you could in one suitcase, go on a multi month voyage, and get started up without any organizational help.

My dad, for example, just hopped on a plane and had an organization resettle him. Absolutely not comparable to the guys on the Mayflower.

2018-11-22 22:11:00 UTC

Jamestown gang gang

2018-11-22 22:11:05 UTC

@Sam Southern - TN me to both fam

2018-11-22 22:11:09 UTC

My mom's mom was the last US arrival and the most aristocratic, raised in Peru with maids n whatnot

2018-11-22 22:11:11 UTC

We’re probably kin of some sort

2018-11-22 22:11:21 UTC

You in your local chapter of the barons? I’m joining up after this weekend

2018-11-22 22:11:27 UTC

Mayflower gang (pretty sure). ⛵

2018-11-22 22:11:33 UTC

That’d be a trip to find out we’re related

2018-11-22 22:11:49 UTC

My most recent ancestor arrived in 1996 😬

2018-11-22 22:11:56 UTC

KY old best friend, AL best friend now

2018-11-22 22:12:36 UTC

@Sam Southern - TN idk if I’m Mayflower gang but my paternal grandmother’s line dates back to the first Scottish peoples arriving in North America in the 1600s.

2018-11-22 22:12:39 UTC

I am not, but I’ve considered joining something along those lines. I could join sons of the American Revolution like a dozen times over lmao

2018-11-22 22:13:30 UTC

Logan's great great etc grandfather was in George Washington's army

2018-11-22 22:13:35 UTC

Most Americans of colonial British extraction are descended from Edward III, so we’re likely related obscurely

2018-11-22 22:13:43 UTC

gosh you guys are making me jealous

2018-11-22 22:13:53 UTC

Yeah I’m applying (really just means submitting the paperwork) to join the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Sons of American Revolution, and Magna Carta Barons. Looking forward to meeting them all and getting some really good contacts going forward in the local business community

2018-11-22 22:14:01 UTC

@Conway - OK very based

2018-11-22 22:14:35 UTC

2018-11-22 22:14:45 UTC

My ancestors were in the same region for at least hundreds of years until my parents broke the tradition

2018-11-22 22:14:51 UTC

I have white guilt but for opposite the normal reasons

2018-11-22 22:15:08 UTC

@Sam Southern - TN could join sons of confederate veterans and sons of union veterans

2018-11-22 22:15:18 UTC
