Some parts of Maryland can absolutely be considered Southern (lol, the southern parts, and a lot of the white flight areas outside of cosmopolitan areas) and the western part is Appalachian

Central Maryland was southern in the way Virginia is. No longer is that way, obviously, but there are pockets. Look at Carroll county for example, very much rural, native, and could be considered southern. 90%+ white as well

Maybe I used to like them because of the glimpses of war. Male children tend to like war and you didn’t get too much of it unless it was coupled with the holocaust. The days of the western was gone when I was growing up
