With such long dwell time on fomites (objects harboring the virus), you can explain spread aboard the ship without necessarily needing to suppose aerosol transmission.

The nursing home in Washington that has yielded so many deaths has also provided us a wealth of data about how this thing survives on surfaces

2020-03-13 04:56:44 UTC

It is downright scary how durable this virus is. It's still being tested but this dwell data suggests this thing will not "just vanish" during the summer as our dear leader likes to claim on TV.

GG @DrYuriMom, you just advanced to level 8!

2020-03-13 04:56:51 UTC

It only makes sense for the virus to spread as fast as it does through some measure of aerosol transmission:
"Federally funded tests conducted by scientists from several major institutions indicated that the novel form of coronavirus behind a worldwide outbreak can survive in the air for several hours.

A study awaiting peer review from scientists at Princeton University, the University of California-Los Angeles and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted online Wednesday indicated that the COVID-19 virus could remain viable in the air "up to 3 hours post aerosolization," while remaining alive on plastic and other surfaces for up to three days.

"Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for multiple hours and on surfaces up to days," reads the study's abstract."

A study awaiting peer review

2020-03-13 04:57:37 UTC

Anyone know what peer review is?

2020-03-13 04:58:10 UTC

It's a hypothesis until the data is validated.

2020-03-13 04:58:52 UTC

And if it's aerosol it just furthers my statements

2020-03-13 04:59:18 UTC

We're going to see this whatever we do. Let's live our lives and isolate those most vulnerable.

2020-03-13 05:01:05 UTC

I know what peer review is

2020-03-13 05:05:27 UTC

Saying this is pointless, most studies on this novel virus have likely not been peer reviewed yet since this takes a long time to do. According to this logic, any information we have is subject to change (which is true). So why not take into account the possibility of aerosol transmission, given the evidence we already have for this? Why put yourself and everyone in your vicinity at risk of infection when travelling if you don't even have methods of transmission solidified yet, *while* knowing for certain that cases can be contagious while asymptomatic and knowing the possibility for a higher death rate (and taking into account the serious symptom rate as well). That's very irresponsible.

2020-03-13 05:05:36 UTC

I'm actually more concerned about the dwell time on surfaces than I am about aerosol

2020-03-13 05:05:46 UTC

Both are bad.

2020-03-13 05:05:50 UTC

Agreed

2020-03-13 05:06:17 UTC

But the dwell time makes it more likely someone who doesn't even know a sick person has been around could get infected

2020-03-13 05:06:27 UTC

Also peer review isn't a hypothesis, it's the scientific community accepting a full study.

2020-03-13 05:06:33 UTC

Makes it more challenging to isolate

2020-03-13 05:07:24 UTC

Anyway, I gotta go to bed. Plenty of sleep is among the best mechanisms someone like me can take to remain healthy. 🙂

2020-03-13 05:07:50 UTC

Yes but this can happen either way. While virons in the air probably won't live nearly as long as on a surface they can just spread out farther.

2020-03-13 05:07:55 UTC

Alright, take care then.

2020-03-13 15:39:12 UTC

China is trying to blame the virus on America now. xD

2020-03-13 15:41:32 UTC

Even though it either came into from their poor hygiene by having things like uncooked meat next to cooked meat i.e. Gordon Ramsey's nightmare, or them spreading a virus they were working with in a lab because they used poor protocols.

2020-03-13 15:42:14 UTC

Ironically though, the countries that trusted China the most have been hit worst by the virus.

2020-03-13 15:43:36 UTC

Italy signed up to the Belt and Road, and Iran and South Korea also refused to close borders and start screening travellers.

2020-03-13 15:44:28 UTC

So the govts are getting their reward for sucking up to China and ignoring all the warning signs for profit.

2020-03-13 15:45:45 UTC

The EU is bitching about the US being racist or whatever, but what Trump said wasn't wrong - they screwed up their response to the virus.

2020-03-13 15:47:08 UTC

Taiwan was on the ball right away though.

2020-03-13 15:47:32 UTC

They never trusted China, so never let down their guard.

2020-03-13 16:34:23 UTC

China's only trying to retain control over their own populace with the US/Japan/Italy coronavirus conspiracies. If many of knew how badly the government handled this, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some uprisings.

2020-03-13 16:35:36 UTC

And the EU can fucking suck it, why the hell would the US *not* restrict travel to one of the new major covid-19 hotspots.

2020-03-14 11:06:45 UTC

the government is limiting encryption for app and website holders/makers

2020-03-14 11:09:07 UTC

i love how congress wants to push on this while people are paying attention to the coronavirus

2020-03-14 11:09:21 UTC

seems like fake news is getting into the way of real news

2020-03-14 19:45:04 UTC

Republicans are scum - of course they are trying to push draconian legislation under the table...it's practically their MO

2020-03-15 11:58:02 UTC

@Dr.Cosby It's bipartisan, 2 Democrats and 2 Republicans. Stop with this shit dude. When they fuck up, we can't give them a pass because we agree with them on some things. You are unfairly giving Democrats a pass when they are just as scum.

Both are.
