In Ireland we have a system like that but we still have a two party problem that WILL NOT DIE no matter how we voters try to screw it up for them. We haven't had an actual election winner for years. The two party leaders are just taking turns now. Literally. Not making that up.
Yes... @Smoke put one up! But where to find his post.....let's keep looking...
Oh my mistake! Sorry that was a pdf version, not audiobook
@Smoke should really be nicknamed The Librarian๐
I vote we make people read aloud on voice chat tonight instead.
No, I mean NATURE! When a baby is born it is obvious it is born with character traits already solid, and from now on it is the mother's job to learn them, and learn how to work them.
> I canโt tell when Brits are trying to be โcheekyโ.
@kcon415 Well, the Irish are always being cheeky, even in serious chats, if that helps? ๐คช
> @Malachi can you explain rank choice voting
@kaizen
Did you find an explanation on the web?
In Ireland it means that instead of voting for just one candidate, your favourite, you rank all (or as many as you wish) the candidates on the ballot in order of your preference. The result is supposed to be fairer, as in more representative of the electorate's choice. Candidates with the fewest votes then get eliminated, and if you voted no.1 for one of them your ballot gets rechecked for who your no.2 choice was. (And so it continues if that choice is eliminated, they now transfer your vote to your No.3 choice. And so on.) This way your vote counts at some stage even if you voted for people who were eliminated. And hopefully the result is that the elected candidate was popular across a wider group of voters.
Wow @Smoke that's amazing. Thank you. I hope it encourages everyone to have a go at book club this week!
What is all this preaching and converting about? You dont get extra points for this, you know?
@kcon415 so tempting to name all the Connollys I know to see if you're related ...
The word is sophistry.
Sophistry!
You've gotta believe in order to believe.
Wow. When was that? Is he ok?
Ok but what if I know people who have had covid?
> @ola Then you haven't been skeptical of that claim.
@Baal Diablo how so?
> I had it and didn't feel sick at all. And I know a lot of people in a similar position.
@Yussuki โช how do you know you had it? Also, yes, it affects people differently, some (a significant percentage) are even asymptomatic, but the ones that get it bad get it real bad and perhaps die of course but also perhaps end up with long term consequences, some of which we dont yet know. I met a man yesterday who had a heart attack following recovery from covid, his cardiologist feels it was related, and another man who has a debilitating cough still left after spending April and May in the ICU. Another man has lost eyesight in one eye...how much do we even know about these cases?
Amazing. Was that something you bought from the internet or your doctor did it?
But also not that failsafe? Is this the one that gives a certain percentage of false results?
Well, guys, I'm not up to date admittedly as the last time I paid proper attention to the news was May. Back then, there was a lot of concern about the limits of antibody testing.
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/12/health/covid-19-antibody-test-explained-wellness/index.html
But if there is confidence in the tests, why aren't we all getting regular tests? Might be helpful.
Why so antagonistic? Perhaps too much red meat.

My government, and its opposition, really would like this covid stuff to be over so they can get on with arguing about Brexit, Reunification of Ireland, and new ways to make money out of the homeless.
I want a test every day. I cant take having to worry about it anymore.
I wish I could take an antibody test and discover I've already had it, I'd be so happy!
> The test is quite annoying lol. The swab goes way up your nose. Hate that haha
@StoneCold316
Oh yes, its horrible, I dont want THAT test every day, I want a new magic one.
I know, I know. But I've been trying to be cool about it since January and now I'm getting impatient.
Glad to hear. But 250 people is a lot! Doesn't sound a good idea.
That's good news. Apart from the flu.๐
Happier if protocols work.
Do the antibodies last forever? No. Are you immune forever anyway?
Right. But with vaccines, we need to get boosters ....
?
Thanks @m.miller
I make that 10pm GMT (UK time) ๐ so that's my plan.
Oh. Oops. I think I got my conversions wrong. I'm an hour early for book club! I am such a swot.
Never heard of it/him but a quick Googlebooks preview peek makes me want to read the collection in full. ๐
Notes? Oh bejayzuz. My dog ate them
> "You ought to go there an see the lake" = "Go there and see the lake" in My language.
@Yussuki โช That IS interesting!
> @ola What's the difference between ought and must in English actually? if u can tell pls
@Yussuki โช
https://www.lexico.com/definition/ought
The way it is usually used, must and ought are almost the same, and there is a lot of overlap in meaning, but "ought" is dropping out of common use and "must" seems more popular. I would say the main difference is that "ought" is more like "should" or "it is very advisable to" and "must" is more like "impelled to" or "unavoidable not to".
Ought is an is in some languages. That's fabulous. Does away with the whole is/ought thing once and for all. Hurrah! ๐ ๐
Ought and is as discussed in The Moral Landscape

This is the book club chat, not the circumcision one ๐
But as you're here, evolution tolerates plenty of "design flaws" including the inherent danger to mother and child of pregnancy and childbirth. I mean, are you kidding me?
Than what?
Sam is right.
Nominal.
I spend no time trying to justify anything Trump tweets, because life is too short for his crap?
Sure.
He is right about questioning the sort of person Trump is.
The tweet? The one that says "imagine being the sort of person who...."
Trump tweets a daily mail article, tweet says low number pay taxes DESPITE CRIPPLING DEBT....what's his point?!
Consider that maybe everything Trump tweets is a red herring. He's trolling us.
Misdirection. A very important skill in some fields!
I have a birthday coming up. I'll use my wish.
Ah. To explain, I was replying to Tom's citation of a quote by Dr Guest that says: gosh my penis is so damn perfect and it is literally the most important thing on this planet. (I paraphrase).

@ThePangburn Hey, did he ever get that 70mill refund he asked for?
Maybe Trump's haircuts were cheap!

2016 report
Let's start with the case for killing paedophile priests.
That's a stupid thing to say.
Uh me busted a huge paedophile now.
My original point was : the religious have no greater claim to society than elected politicians or secular communities do - in fact, the religious have had their go at running societies for long enough, maybe it is time to try something else.
I've never met anyone who wants paedophiles to get away with their crimes tbh.
At least it's a crime, I guess. That's progress by some religious track records.
Yawn
