Sorry to interrupt the. uh, intellectual discussion, but I've just recently started watching Sargon's content. I saw his latest video about deplatforming just now, and I've noticed his Twitter link isn't working. Is this a recent development or no? I haven't checked out his twitter before, so I don't know if this is new or just me or what.

2018-09-19 02:50:46 UTC [Sparta #general]

Oh, ok. Strange that he should still have the link, then. I thought that happened in conjunction with that report. Sorry to interrupt.

2018-09-20 19:59:32 UTC [Sparta #general]

That's a topic that's always interested me. Any books you recommend in particular?

2018-09-20 20:00:31 UTC [Sparta #general]

Are there lots of citations/bibliography?

2018-09-20 20:01:38 UTC [Sparta #general]

Sounds good, I'll check it out.

2018-09-20 20:01:57 UTC [Sparta #general]

Sorry, go ahead

2018-09-20 20:05:25 UTC [Sparta #general]

I don't recall where I read this, so take this not as iron fact but as something to investigate, but the inquisitions were somewhat less harmful than people make them out to be. The church didn't pick who got investigated, it was their job to just ask them up front if they were a heretic, even give them a chance to just repent and be absolved of the crime, then just hand them over to the state if not. The Spanish ones were a lot more corrupt, yet that was mostly on the government's end. But again, don't take this as gospel from me unless I remember the book I read this from, and the book checks out.

2018-09-20 20:07:30 UTC [Sparta #general]

^^^ Yeah, there's that, too. Really puts into perspective that fewer people died during that period than die from crime in Democrat-dominated major cities each month.

2018-09-20 20:10:01 UTC [Sparta #general]

Whoa, I wasn't aware of that last bit. I'll have to look into that. Anyway, I've been thinking about this whole deplatforming prelude, and I think I have a unique take on the matter. I've been keeping an eye on this really messed-up side of YouTube that has been huge in ad revenue and has therefore been given a blind eye by Youtube.

2018-09-20 20:13:51 UTC [Sparta #general]

Okay, this is gonna come as a bit of a shock if you haven't looked into it before, but there are dozens of these Youtube channels that pander to kids with animations using licensed characters, and while on the surface they're just some cheap educational junk you'd see on daytime kids' tv, a significant number of these videos contain extremely explicit content that's just messed up.

2018-09-20 20:14:09 UTC [Sparta #general]

You can find and see a lot of this stuff yourself by doing a little surfing (in incognito mode, don't mess up your recommended feed), but this video sums up the matter effectively. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afamhuZLDjM

2018-09-20 20:18:21 UTC [Sparta #general]

I've seen some of these, and they're just horrifying. And they get millions of views. So the angle I'm thinking of here is that YT is very hypocritical about taking down supposedly harmfully influential content, and while changing the topic to this does come with the chance that deplatforming seems legitimate (it is in this case imo), the important thing is to distinguish opinion pieces meant to start conversations from garbage seemingly meant to mess up kids, while calling out YT for letting actually horrible stuff slide in order to get ad revenue. Because if widespread influence of toxic content was what they were truly worried about, these multi-million viewed channels would be getting the ax instead of small political channels meant to encourage adults to think for themselves.

Oh, yeah, I heard about with Ecco. Some truly unique games, if imperfect ones.

2018-09-20 21:47:23 UTC [Sparta #general]

Oh, yeah, and Defenders of the Future had great music, too. By Tim Follin.

2018-09-20 21:53:18 UTC [Sparta #general]

This is a great highlight of Tim's music from a great YT channel. Anyway, go ahead, sorry to interrupt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC1dTzyb5Gs

Best walk cycle, too.

Because the music is really cool and psychedelic. And good.

The cultural fronts are just as in need of good men ans the physical ones.

2018-09-20 22:39:02 UTC [Sparta #general]

About that healthcare/abortion argument earlier, in past times, adults used to take care of their parents, and the private sector is better suited for taking care of the needy instead of redistribution of wealth, anyway, but I'm interrupting.

2018-09-20 23:03:26 UTC [Sparta #general]

Was just gonna ask what I had to do to get permission to post pictures, but I see you're busy atm

2018-09-20 23:03:41 UTC [Sparta #general]

Okey doke, thx

2018-09-20 23:06:03 UTC [Sparta #general]

I'd worry less about the science of these things so much as how they're applied to certain institutions.

2018-09-20 23:06:17 UTC [Sparta #general]

None of my business what you're into, and I've surely no legal ground to complain.

2018-09-20 23:17:56 UTC [Sparta #general]

As far as I'm concerned, people's preferences are not any skin off my nose. It's just a matter of to what extent accommodating them crosses from courtesy to conformity.
Wait, did Dark Horse comics shut down?

2018-09-20 23:18:49 UTC [Sparta #general]

I hadn't been keeping up,. but that's too bad to hear.

2018-09-20 23:20:09 UTC [Sparta #general]

I agree with bakeon

2018-09-20 23:23:05 UTC [Sparta #general]

Labor Day, that reminds me, I'm a big fan of cinema, and I've found Russian films to be very interesting.

FocalBot, huh? What's the difference between that and the Rhythm bot?

2018-09-20 23:24:55 UTC [Sparta #general]

@radeon Exactly!

2018-09-20 23:25:47 UTC [Sparta #general]

Although I thought that was just them localizing the John Huston (?) 1948 film. You have about four kinds of Russian films:

I guess not. Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots match concluded?

2018-09-20 23:26:59 UTC [Sparta #general]

or russian movies that no one has seen

2018-09-20 23:28:22 UTC [Sparta #general]

Sorry, that was John Ford who made the 1940 Grapes of Wrath film, not John Huston. huston made stuff like The Maltese Falcon. both were talented directors, though.

2018-09-20 23:28:55 UTC [Sparta #general]

And actually, may Russian films are astoundingly good, but the government gives them a hard time unless its propaganda.

2018-09-20 23:29:14 UTC [Sparta #general]

You have about four kinds of Russian films:

2018-09-20 23:29:53 UTC [Sparta #general]

1.) Well-made films that are unfortunate propaganda (Battleship Potempkin, I Am Cuba)

2018-09-20 23:30:05 UTC [Sparta #general]

2.) Bad Propaganda films

2018-09-20 23:30:29 UTC [Sparta #general]

3.) Apolitical films that are good or bad

2018-09-20 23:31:31 UTC [Sparta #general]

Eh, forget the list. Anyway, there are great Russian films that are apolitical or actually criticize the Communist regime.

2018-09-20 23:34:27 UTC [Sparta #general]

Many of the great films are almost thwarted by the Russian government. The most famous (and possibly best) Russian film was probably Andrei Tarkovsky's "Stalker" (based on the same series as those video games). It depicted the Soviet government as created a materialistic world without hope or even any material goods. Needless to say, Tarkvosky got exiled not long after.

2018-09-20 23:35:51 UTC [Sparta #general]

Marriage isn't inherently bad, it just demands the kind of character that is uncommon these days.

2018-09-20 23:36:39 UTC [Sparta #general]

Best to distinguish between love and infatuation/lust.

2018-09-20 23:37:47 UTC [Sparta #general]

Erm, can I say one more thing about the whole Russian film thing?

2018-09-20 23:38:57 UTC [Sparta #general]

Something I'm conflicted about is the matter of excellently-crafted Russian films that exalt not necessarily the Communist government but do depict the Russian soldier fighting to protect his country in WW2 movies in a positive light.

2018-09-20 23:40:40 UTC [Sparta #general]

Okay, Imma just put this link here. It's an excellent Russian war film with English subs. Part 2 should show in the sidebar. Would be interested to hear thoughts if anyone decides to see this movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDq9fL--Avw

2018-09-20 23:42:46 UTC [Sparta #general]

Marriage isn't bad, unfaithfulness or relationships between incompatible personifies is.

2018-09-20 23:45:17 UTC [Sparta #general]

My doctor recommends for a stuffy nose this water bottle nasal thing that's extremely uncomfortable to use but gets the job done well.

2018-09-20 23:46:13 UTC [Sparta #general]

Difference between cigars and cigarettes is that you puff out the former but breathe in the latter, I think. I don't smoke, though.

2018-09-20 23:47:17 UTC [Sparta #general]

Oh, yeah, that too.

2018-09-20 23:52:25 UTC [Sparta #general]

How does that thing handle turns?

2018-09-20 23:52:47 UTC [Sparta #general]

gtg bai

2018-09-20 23:53:32 UTC [Sparta #general]

Ey, it's ok, thanks anyway

2018-09-21 02:28:23 UTC [Sparta #general]

Hmm, so anything that isn't normal is not abnormal?

2018-09-21 02:29:55 UTC [Sparta #general]

Incidentally, from someone who used to have weight problems himself, I highly recommend taking up exercising, preferably in martial arts because that's cool and gives a tangible goal to work for.

2018-09-21 02:33:47 UTC [Sparta #general]

I dropped sodas about four years ago, and I think that helps, too. I know some overweight people who don't treat themselves better due to time constraints, but even if you actively exercise for just a year or so, your body will adjust so that you keep a better form even if you work out less. Again, I can speak from experience here.

2018-09-21 02:34:47 UTC [Sparta #general]

Exactly. Most junk food works like that.

2018-09-21 02:36:46 UTC [Sparta #general]

I have a weakness for cookies and pizza bites. I only eat them every few weeks, but I'm somewhat unnerved by the fact I even get cravings for those considering how rarely I eat them.

2018-09-21 02:36:52 UTC [Sparta #general]

^not together, that'd be kinda nasty

2018-09-21 02:40:12 UTC [Sparta #general]

Agreed.

2018-09-21 02:41:05 UTC [Sparta #general]

Oh, hey, there's a fitness chat.

2018-09-21 02:41:18 UTC [Sparta #general]

Man, there's one for everything.

2018-09-21 02:43:05 UTC [Sparta #general]

I don't know about shaming, but I am happy to hum to this eternal classic masterwork. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2mU6USTBRE

2018-09-21 02:44:15 UTC [Sparta #general]

Yeah, I do think that's a useful force that seems to be used only by those who tell you not to use it on those who need it.

2018-09-21 02:46:25 UTC [Sparta #general]

I know what I have to do now. I must take after the noble orca whale. I should know; I used ta be as big as one! Eyyyyyy

2018-09-21 02:48:04 UTC [Sparta #general]

You could say the guy in the video was really.... meating out wisdom.

2018-09-21 03:07:28 UTC [Sparta #general]

I'm not really the target audience for these types of movies anyway, but I'd be more interested in comic book adaptations of pulpy small-scale stories or dizzying higher-dimensional cosmic antics than people punching each other through buildings.

2018-09-21 03:08:03 UTC [Sparta #general]

*Boom, Antiboom* by Alduous Huxley

2018-09-24 05:46:56 UTC [Sparta #general]

@M4Gunner Well, maybe there will still be a market for garbageware for PewDiePie or whoever to screech at. Or maybe you could be the one to do the screeching! Just don't make jokes that are too edgy.

2018-09-24 05:50:54 UTC [Sparta #general]

Did better than *Michael Moore in Trumpland,* though. That made only about $150,00 TOTAL if I understand correctly.

2018-09-24 05:52:57 UTC [Sparta #general]

I haven't seen his latest nonsense since going to see that in a theater is as inviting as watching 2 hours of Democratic Party campaign commercials, but I wonder what about this film isn't totally redundant compared to Moore in Trumpland.

2018-09-24 06:19:27 UTC [Sparta #general]

@Shurik As in, someone saying "you're wrong because you just want us to do this"?

2018-09-24 06:22:43 UTC [Sparta #general]

I think the intent fallacy is rather emotionally driven, so you could try to make the debate as objective as possible. Maybe go for something among the lines of "My intent is irrelevant to the discussion, and even if it was, you're best off addressing my points in order to foil my intent, instead of the other way around."

2018-09-24 06:28:06 UTC [Sparta #general]

Oh, in that case, I do like to know intent. I was thinking in a n argument between two people and one trying to discredit the other, not bringing an authority source into the matter.

2018-09-24 06:30:26 UTC [Sparta #general]

Another good example would be the 2nd Amendment having Thomas Jefferson say that the right of the people to keep and bear arms should not be infringed (will source if needed). I'm all for intent as context.

2018-09-24 06:32:59 UTC [Sparta #general]

I prefer to look at execution over intent in terms of works of art, but intent is absolutely helpful in terms of theory or philosophy or what have you, because intent isn't just a goal in those cases, it's essential context.

2018-09-24 06:36:02 UTC [Sparta #general]

Well, execution in terms of narrative, anyway. Intent is a lot more helpful for works of nonfiction.

2018-09-24 06:39:34 UTC [Sparta #general]

Oh yeah, Alex (can't spell his name right in full) totally intended that. And I think the execution speaks for itself, but intent is good there, too.

2018-09-24 06:42:58 UTC [Sparta #general]

As far as what I mean with execution being more important than intent with works of fiction, I mean bad works that may been cool in concept. Or, hey, maybe even good works that could be accidentally better than intended. There's tons of little foreboding details in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (a painting of a swamp in the protagonist's office and other foreboding details hinting at her fate) that many people debate were intended or just the result of others looking into it really deeply, but either way, those details enhance the movie. Something like a political message, however, is best to be investigated as much as possible, because a misinterpretation there could cause harm or confusion.

2018-09-24 06:46:40 UTC [Sparta #general]

Haven't heard of Snow crash, but if it pulls off that idea well, I should check it out. Thanks!

2018-09-24 06:48:28 UTC [Sparta #general]

I'm always interested by works with a certain intent that end up backfiring, like how the Soviets screened The Grapes of Wrath to besmirch the US but ended up achieving the opposite effect since everyone there was amazed we even had cars here.

2018-09-24 06:56:03 UTC [Sparta #general]

Sorry to interrupt, but back on the topic of authorial intent, my conscience gets a bit troubled when I see an amazing film like, say *Come and See,* which is a Russian film about a young boy who tries to ride out WW2 and ends up fighting for the Motherland to protect his countrymen from the Nazis. The execution of that film is apolitical, but is it moral to like a film that may be indirectly promoting communism?

2018-09-24 07:02:27 UTC [Sparta #general]

I'm glad to hear someone else feels the same way; this is the movie I referred to, by the way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDq9fL--Avw

2018-09-24 07:02:48 UTC [Sparta #general]

Which one?

2018-09-24 07:04:41 UTC [Sparta #general]

I've heard that most consider The Idiot his weakest, but that it's still very good. Although I haven't heard anything about Notes.

2018-09-24 07:05:12 UTC [Sparta #general]

I'm only familair with C & P and Brothers, myself, and it's been too long.

2018-09-24 07:06:35 UTC [Sparta #general]

I'm much more familiar with Russian film than literature, myself, but I'd like to start. Have you read any Chekov?

2018-09-24 07:07:50 UTC [Sparta #general]

I read a bit of Uncle Vanya, but life sidetracked me.

2018-09-24 07:12:55 UTC [Sparta #general]

Wrote on my to-do list, thanks! I used to do a lot of reading, but I've gotten behind due to school. Recently I've started making reviews for games and films on HonestGamers and Letterboxd, respectively, and since learning more about each medium heightens my appreciation for the other, I'm hoping the same will prove true for books I need to read.
