2018-09-30 11:26:57 UTC

sorry, that was @Stefan Payne

2018-09-30 11:27:11 UTC

Yes, that was it!

2018-09-30 11:27:34 UTC

Y'know, Sam Harris is the most religious person in the Pangbourne debates

2018-09-30 11:28:53 UTC

his religion is Atheism. He is more evanjelical than the Mormons

2018-09-30 12:13:08 UTC

Everyone's got a religion

2018-09-30 12:14:32 UTC

mine's anime thighs

2018-09-30 12:27:08 UTC

```Everyone's got a religion```
Exactly my point. When you don't believe in God, your mind looks for other things to believe in. And if they aren't ment to be believed in, its a very very bad thing.
2018-09-30 13:39:11 UTC
many people are ok with not knowing
2018-09-30 13:39:19 UTC
I've got no idea
2018-09-30 13:39:33 UTC
there could be a god of some kind
2018-09-30 13:39:46 UTC
Or maybe we all originated from the big bang
2018-09-30 13:39:56 UTC
Or maybe we are living in a simulation
2018-09-30 13:40:05 UTC
or maybe something completely different
2018-09-30 13:49:56 UTC
my religion is capitalism
2018-09-30 15:25:17 UTC
```Everyone's got a religion```
I dont. That might be thing for people who "stopped beliving"๐Ÿค”

But i have been atheist all my life. So no, not everyone have religion.

2018-09-30 15:27:45 UTC

I think the issue here is what people define as a "relligion"

2018-09-30 15:28:16 UTC

Like for example, is relligion something you hold as a standard? "I relligiously follow a certain rule"

2018-09-30 15:28:34 UTC

A diety you follow? What constitutes a diety?

2018-09-30 15:28:52 UTC

The lack of belief a belief?

2018-09-30 15:29:34 UTC

If you want to continue this discussion further it would be wise for everyone to state what their defination of a relligion is. Or at the very least, what something has to have before you consider it relligion

2018-09-30 15:32:26 UTC

2018-09-30 16:05:17 UTC

Belief is to hold some value or statement as self-evident

2018-09-30 16:10:27 UTC

There is nothing in the universe to prove that justice is real. Even when it comes to matter vs antimatter, the universe is heavily biased towards matter. But since ancient times we have upheld justice as a cardinal virtue.

2018-09-30 16:13:29 UTC

Many athiests believe the failings of communism have been that bad people attempted it, not systematic.

2018-09-30 16:25:10 UTC

yeah all commies are retarded.
but good old "correlation does not imply causation"

2018-09-30 17:10:30 UTC

1.) I think Donald should call the Press "JJJ" from Spider-Man

2018-09-30 17:10:58 UTC

2.) ```my religion is capitalism```
That is very bad as you can see in China, where they have no Religion and would sell their mother for Money...

2018-09-30 18:19:01 UTC

selling your mother for money isn't capitalism. it's just common sense.

2018-09-30 18:21:10 UTC

some people preach atheism as if it's just another religion

2018-09-30 18:32:03 UTC

>selling your mother for money is just common sense.
WTF

>some people preach atheism as if it's just another religion
they are not atheist by the defenition...

2018-09-30 18:34:03 UTC

having a mother is not a good investment

2018-09-30 18:34:45 UTC

if you can find someone who buys, then it's just common sense to sell

2018-09-30 18:35:11 UTC

a lot of people with mothers end up having to pay a lot to keep them alive in an elderly home

2018-09-30 18:36:53 UTC

lol

2018-09-30 18:40:47 UTC

*it must suck to be unwanted accident kid with no father.*

2018-09-30 18:41:27 UTC

i imagine it does

2018-09-30 18:44:36 UTC

Well, I refer peoples to JBP. you may say you are not religious but I'd wager you live your live pretty closely to a religious ideal. actions do speak louder than words.

2018-09-30 18:45:42 UTC

well what if the ideals originate from something different than religion in the first place?

2018-09-30 18:46:03 UTC

maybe we're drawn to religious ideals for a reason

2018-09-30 18:47:03 UTC

because we already resonate with them

2018-09-30 18:48:27 UTC

we just need some help with having more consistency with applying them to our life, and having the principles formulated

2018-09-30 18:51:00 UTC

umm, if you live in a western country the values came from Judeo-Christianity.

2018-09-30 18:51:28 UTC

Communist did away with religion and they suddenly did not value life and other things.

2018-09-30 18:52:20 UTC

personally I think mankind has a God shaped hole in our heart. not advocating existance of God here.
If we don't fill it with something good it will be filled by other things like feminism or the worship of the state

2018-09-30 18:52:30 UTC

^

2018-09-30 18:53:01 UTC

well then it sounds like my argument is compatible with your argument
im saying that if we didnt already resonate with it, then judeo christianity would have never been a thing in the first place

2018-09-30 18:53:10 UTC

The basis of human life being sacred is again Judeo-Christian. A spark of the Divine in all of us so to slay a man is to commit deicide

2018-09-30 18:53:57 UTC

the reason we resonate with it could be either due to how a god made us, or how we simply evolved, it doesnt matter for the sake of my argument

2018-09-30 18:54:06 UTC

nah it evolved over a long time. the final human sacrifice was codified as Christ so no one else would need to make that 'physical' sacrifice

2018-09-30 18:54:14 UTC

I'm not religious myself, but from what I've seen when we get rid of certain value system another one replaces it. That new value system doesn't necessarily value human life or liberty

2018-09-30 18:55:25 UTC

Sam Harris has his own Value system he wants to impliment and lets assume its a great system.
He wants to tear down all religion (much like certain religions do to other faiths) regardless of its intrinsic value to society

2018-09-30 18:55:45 UTC

Baby and bathwater spring to mind

2018-09-30 18:56:14 UTC

@grant I think you are spot on there

2018-09-30 18:56:42 UTC

My problem is the tearing down. Get people to join your value system and flourish. it will succeed in the market place of ideas if its good

2018-09-30 18:56:44 UTC

This is why the Individual is the only minority that matters

2018-09-30 18:57:19 UTC

Yaron brook has the same problem with religion. (I was just watching a video of him talk with Douglas Murray)

2018-09-30 18:57:27 UTC

@grant in an ideal world sure however humanity isnt inherently good.

2018-09-30 18:58:34 UTC

well, thats the great left/right divide. the left tends to act as if mankind is inherently good and the right acts as if the natural man is an enemy of god (yes, I just Jesus smuggled ๐Ÿ˜› )

2018-09-30 18:59:19 UTC

I like Yaron but I think he has to much faith (and I really mean faith) in capitolism and people.

2018-09-30 19:00:00 UTC

Murray is my other gay crush, after Ryan Reynolds ofc

2018-09-30 19:00:34 UTC

If the majority of atheists were following the value system of those guys like Sam Harris and Yaron Brooke, I might be more open to talking against religion. As I see it most atheist seem to transfer to worshipping the state. So I want to stay where we are until the next branch we grab on to actually looks steady.

2018-09-30 19:00:58 UTC

it actually bothers me more that people with actual good intentions are ruining the world

2018-09-30 19:01:23 UTC

it doesnt matter how good your intentions are if your ideas are shit

2018-09-30 19:01:29 UTC

@grant again you are spot on there mate
@NativeInterface it breaks my heart that so much bad is done with good intentions

2018-09-30 19:02:15 UTC

โ€œOf all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.โ€
โ€• C.S. Lewis

2018-09-30 19:02:58 UTC

โค

2018-09-30 19:03:30 UTC

@grant have you read the Screwtape letters by Lewis?

2018-09-30 19:03:58 UTC

No, I have to admit I got that quote from playing Tropico.

2018-09-30 19:04:09 UTC

hahaha ace!

2018-09-30 19:04:23 UTC

my mum introduced me to it and its exceptional

2018-09-30 19:05:10 UTC

basically one of Satans devils writing to his nephew, an up and coming tempter

2018-09-30 19:05:18 UTC

` it breaks my heart that so much bad is done with good intentions`
so much bad is disguised to sound to be "with good intentions"

2018-09-30 19:05:47 UTC

@Jasse you sir are also completly correct and I meant that stuff too

2018-09-30 19:06:17 UTC

Hitler convinced the Germans his plans were 'good'

2018-09-30 19:06:50 UTC

it's disguised to trick people into supporting it, which means there are true believers with good intentions

2018-09-30 19:07:40 UTC

jews convinced people his intentions were bad.

2018-09-30 19:16:35 UTC

That's why that C.S. Lewis quote is so good. People keep saying all the communist governements were corrupt. I think its the opposite, and the more they believed it the more they could justify killing people. After all Communism is sort of Utilitarian , and they did away with any religion that might tell them the individual is worth something and killing is wrong.

2018-09-30 19:16:39 UTC

hitler did nothing wrong.
*exept lose war*

2018-09-30 19:17:29 UTC

lol communism is litterally jewsih and killed tens of milions.

2018-09-30 19:19:49 UTC

Communism didnt do away with religion, it replaced the church with the state as the new 'God'

2018-09-30 19:20:38 UTC

@NativeInterface they are known as useful idiots

2018-09-30 19:21:14 UTC

hitler didnt do much wrong according to regular statist standards
double nuking japan and agent orange and forced sterilizations and inhumane medical experiments and depleted uranium is just normal things that a lot of statists defend tirelessly to this day

2018-09-30 19:21:26 UTC

@Jes Well that just goes back to your point about people having a hole in them that religion tends to fill. I think we are seeing today that even in cases where communism isn't cramed into that hole people grab it and put it in there anyway.

2018-09-30 19:21:33 UTC

@grant its easy to justify murdering people when you only care about the whole not the component people of the state

2018-09-30 19:23:19 UTC

@NativeInterface statistically speaking the double nuke was the option leading to the least loss of life. And it wasn't America's job to ensure their enemies lived, only that they (and their allies) survived. a governments job is to protect it's people

2018-09-30 19:23:22 UTC

@Jes Yeah, I think that shows also that Judea-Christian value play a part in making sure we don't do that and that its not in our nature.

2018-09-30 19:23:45 UTC

yeah see what i mean

2018-09-30 19:23:57 UTC

heck i had an argument with a close friend about if torture is bad or not

2018-09-30 19:23:59 UTC

I didnt say it was moraly right

2018-09-30 19:24:14 UTC

thats a tough one

2018-09-30 19:24:32 UTC

so yeah if all thats excusable than why not hitler

2018-09-30 19:24:46 UTC

yeah fire bombing and nuking japan...

2018-09-30 19:24:48 UTC

he's pretty mainstream really

2018-09-30 19:25:15 UTC

again because the National Socialist workers party didnt care about individuals only the state

2018-09-30 19:25:38 UTC

I also did not mean to imply it was excusable

2018-09-30 19:27:05 UTC

i think public education plays a big role in causing that

2018-09-30 19:27:19 UTC

maybe the biggest

2018-09-30 19:27:24 UTC

public education in the UK is just indoctrination now

2018-09-30 19:27:35 UTC

Nazis and Communist just disagree on which type of collectivization is best.
