2018-01-06 17:19:32 UTC

2018-01-06 17:19:44 UTC

oh a mod

2018-01-06 17:19:55 UTC

uhhh good luck

2018-01-06 17:20:15 UTC

I expect the hell to rain down as this server becommes more known.

2018-01-06 17:20:51 UTC

It may become popular.

2018-01-06 17:20:55 UTC

ahh fuck it, youll probably need jesus, zeus and buddha once that happens

2018-01-06 17:23:00 UTC

One of the other servers I'm on only has about 5 moderators for over a thousand users, but it's also a pretty quiet server overall

2018-01-06 17:23:23 UTC

Probably cause of the userbase?

2018-01-06 17:23:24 UTC

It varies. Some crowds are rowdy.

2018-01-06 17:23:28 UTC

2018-01-06 17:23:33 UTC

Some are peaceful.

2018-01-06 17:23:43 UTC

People are different, case closed

2018-01-06 17:23:48 UTC

Hey Kori.

2018-01-06 17:23:57 UTC

10 minutes before a reply

2018-01-06 17:30:00 UTC

Discord raids are a very common thing.

2018-01-06 17:30:16 UTC

Hi @Timcast , got a few suggestions for you: 1. create an admin only channel for posting announcements/new videos etc. 2. create multiple voice channels and limit them to say, 20 users 3. add a suggestions board which people can post on for the moderators to see.

2018-01-06 17:30:18 UTC

@Bruce Ohn o, you're a mod here..

2018-01-06 17:31:36 UTC

yep

2018-01-06 17:31:40 UTC

ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

2018-01-06 17:32:03 UTC

It will do some good to have a bit more hierarchy and some more channels for rules, announcements, and such.

2018-01-06 17:33:37 UTC

the kekistan discord is quite a good example of a well ordered public server, with one text channel per topic etc.

2018-01-06 17:33:58 UTC

how big is that one?

2018-01-06 17:34:05 UTC

Also, sounds like something id be into.

2018-01-06 17:34:06 UTC

several thousand users

2018-01-06 17:34:13 UTC

2018-01-06 17:34:34 UTC

I think I peered into the abyss

2018-01-06 17:34:38 UTC

Waiting for it to blink

2018-01-06 17:34:57 UTC

Personally I would recommend to have general chat for everybody to use and post. Though I would recommend that there would be some "higher-tier" threads which everybody can't access for a good reason, people who post quality threads.

2018-01-06 17:35:08 UTC

yeah its not for everyone, but their structure is definitely worth imitating

2018-01-06 17:35:09 UTC

Hello

2018-01-06 17:35:28 UTC

Man the 10-minute time limit is pointless

2018-01-06 17:35:37 UTC

look, Koris in the house

2018-01-06 17:35:54 UTC

Hallo

2018-01-06 17:36:11 UTC

Bruce

2018-01-06 17:36:18 UTC

Did he give you Emoji powers

2018-01-06 17:36:28 UTC

also, you guys need an faq/rules section asap

2018-01-06 17:36:55 UTC

The first thing Kori wants is emojis lol.

2018-01-06 17:37:03 UTC

YE

2018-01-06 17:37:31 UTC

I have some that won't be racy as well

2018-01-06 17:37:41 UTC

@WOODY Yeah, but not a damn wall of text rule pages.

2018-01-06 17:37:45 UTC

So as to not offend tim pools audience

2018-01-06 17:37:56 UTC

yes, keep the rules brief

2018-01-06 17:39:15 UTC

2018-01-06 17:39:27 UTC

No spamming, no doxxing, be reasonable.
Follow the discord policys so we all get along.

2018-01-06 17:39:41 UTC

There are some example rules.

2018-01-06 17:39:43 UTC

thats a good start

2018-01-06 17:39:43 UTC

Well, add in shit that isnt common sense

2018-01-06 17:40:17 UTC

Well actually, its probably not that common though if people have to be reminded sooo

2018-01-06 17:40:24 UTC

>no doxing
ZERO'S WAIFU IS YUKIE

2018-01-06 17:40:29 UTC

Common sense isn't common.

2018-01-06 17:40:40 UTC

@Kori Tainaka >Has an anime avatar...

2018-01-06 17:40:45 UTC

Kori, no!!

2018-01-06 17:41:02 UTC

What have you done?!

2018-01-06 17:41:08 UTC

>I have an anime avatar

2018-01-06 17:41:13 UTC

you have to be explicit with your rules though, as ambiguous rules are designed to be broken. If you want to create a healthy discourse, you need objective rules that can easily be judged by moderators.

2018-01-06 17:41:18 UTC

<:yukie_smile:350106585864994826>

2018-01-06 17:41:56 UTC

So shit like no hatespeech isnt a good rule since its subjective

2018-01-06 17:42:20 UTC

exactly

2018-01-06 17:42:27 UTC

No commie speech

2018-01-06 17:42:29 UTC

thats what Tim's video today was saying

2018-01-06 17:42:46 UTC

Nor is it good for someone who is explicitly free speech.

2018-01-06 17:42:52 UTC

Yeah, a much better rule than "No hate speech" would be "No speech", because that's purely objective. You can't talk.

2018-01-06 17:42:58 UTC

:D

2018-01-06 17:43:07 UTC

We need context.

2018-01-06 17:43:09 UTC

Silence is golden I guess

2018-01-06 17:43:24 UTC

But duct tape is silver

2018-01-06 17:43:46 UTC

Xd

2018-01-06 17:43:47 UTC

even better, tape them mouths shut, silence

2018-01-06 17:50:18 UTC

Still, i will be here for the chaos, assuming that actually happens. Sorry for the debbie downer, but Ive seen it happen pleanty so best of luck to the mod and future mods

2018-01-06 17:55:51 UTC

@balticnapo max raises a good point in that video, but you are missing the point. The point is not whether or not the rules are objective, the point is that we should be striving to get as close as possible to an objective set of rules, and since this is a discord server linked directly to Tim, it shouldn't be that hard to find a set of rules that we agree on the necessity of, because we are likely coming from a similar point of principle, i.e. something close to the principles of freedom of speech and free discussion. Keeping that in mind, that is what we should design the rules to protect.

2018-01-06 17:56:24 UTC

Well, ill leave that to bruce and tim to discuss

2018-01-06 17:56:33 UTC

also, a lot of the point of that video is that ais are now determining what people see online and catering specifically to their biases.

2018-01-06 17:57:10 UTC

i.e. the ais are designed to cater for maximum engagement rather than maximum objectivity and truth.

2018-01-06 17:57:34 UTC

which can lead to the exact opposite of this

2018-01-06 18:23:57 UTC

Lol, well, Tim has done a really good job at explaining issues with some laws. I am sure hed have little issue with writing up rules for a small discord server.

2018-01-06 18:24:02 UTC

Well, small as of now

2018-01-06 18:26:42 UTC

yeah, but as with all things, its better to do some forward planning with some kind of vision, because that increases the likelihood of you achieving that vision, so I'm just asking the mods to think about what they want to see on this server and how they are going to achieve that.

2018-01-06 18:27:12 UTC

I just want to make shitty puns.

2018-01-06 18:27:30 UTC

Like when the inevitable chan raid happens, I want to yell out pools closed.

2018-01-06 18:27:55 UTC

lol

2018-01-06 18:28:56 UTC

yeah but you aren't a mod so your goal may be different to the mods ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

2018-01-06 18:29:24 UTC

Every time I'm granted power on a forum/channel/whatever, the first thing I do is I ban myself

2018-01-06 18:29:34 UTC

Because if I've got the power to ban people, why not start with the worst offender?

2018-01-06 18:30:02 UTC

Im only an admin on one server, really small one with double digits (like 50). But I do fuck all there.

2018-01-06 18:31:04 UTC

Back when I was in scanlation (on IRC) I was an operator on several channels and I was admin on one, but that was mostly because the group's leader let their channel lapse and I reclaimed it for them

2018-01-06 18:31:18 UTC

I think the biggest channel I was in back then was 75 people

2018-01-06 18:36:57 UTC

@Bruce @Timcast another suggestion: set up a moderation bot to help deal with minor moderation issues that occur often (role management is generally a good thing for bots)

2018-01-06 18:37:21 UTC

I'm aware that mee6 has a slowmode

2018-01-06 18:37:28 UTC

I'm familiar with it

2018-01-06 18:37:33 UTC

@WOODY Except for the part where you have to figure out what permissions to give the bot so that it can do everything for you

2018-01-06 18:37:34 UTC

it will also help if and when a raid occurs

2018-01-06 18:37:49 UTC

you just make a role for the bot

2018-01-06 18:37:53 UTC

Yeah, most Discord bots have anti-raid utilities

2018-01-06 18:37:56 UTC

its not too hard

2018-01-06 18:38:54 UTC

The bot I use didn't have good documentation around what permissions it needed, so it took me a few days to get everything right

2018-01-06 18:39:45 UTC

use a different bot then? theres plenty of bots around for all sorts of things.

2018-01-06 18:40:10 UTC

I got one bot set up right. Why would I switch to another bot and go through another potential headache?

2018-01-06 18:40:32 UTC

Emily and I are going to head to Montreal ina few days and then Detroit if you have any story suggestions

2018-01-06 18:42:00 UTC

How bout a channel for that

2018-01-06 18:42:10 UTC

this is the newsroom channel

2018-01-06 18:42:32 UTC

Maybe you should make another text channel for general discussion so that the distinction is more apparent

2018-01-06 18:42:38 UTC

Oh so shitposting is the general?

2018-01-06 18:42:54 UTC

@Kori Tainaka I think <#398973785426100234> is for shitposting

2018-01-06 18:42:58 UTC

If you could shoot some drone Footage off Mont Royal that would be a great scenery for a video or an interview spot @Timcast

2018-01-06 18:43:36 UTC

mountain right in the middle of the city

2018-01-06 18:44:27 UTC

@Timcast I would be grateful if you would read my suggestions further up, some of them could be quite helpful.

2018-01-06 18:45:25 UTC

2018-01-06 18:45:32 UTC

dji drones are the worst

2018-01-06 18:45:37 UTC

all of my batteries failed

2018-01-06 18:46:17 UTC

RIp

2018-01-06 18:46:29 UTC

I was talking about this with another member of the discord yesterday on voice chat but something to look into maybe in the future is what's going on with California and pot. And I don't mean like the debate, I mean how right now a lot of start-up bussinesses have just dumped a TON of money into pot production and might have to find a way to pull out all their resources really quick.

2018-01-06 18:46:50 UTC

Yeah pot is a hot debate right now if you haven't done it already

2018-01-06 18:47:05 UTC

Has nothing to do with Montreal though

2018-01-06 18:47:12 UTC

oof

2018-01-06 18:47:47 UTC

I don't understand Sessions, obsession with pot

2018-01-06 18:48:13 UTC

he said it had *basically* the same risk as heroin, which is just objectively false

2018-01-06 18:48:15 UTC

Like on the freeway near me there are ads for edible products already for sale, apps that help you find pot stores and all of that; what legally is going to happen to those people if the feds crack down? Does creating an ad for pot products and posting it on a bilboard have a different sentance or punishment then being caught selling it?

2018-01-06 18:48:37 UTC

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

2018-01-06 18:48:42 UTC

technically no

2018-01-06 18:49:02 UTC

because each state was allowed to have pass their own laws on marijuana

2018-01-06 18:49:10 UTC

but now that, that has been repealed

2018-01-06 18:49:42 UTC

businesses that were created before the repeal *might* still have legal standing with the federal government, def with the state governments

2018-01-06 18:49:55 UTC

So in the overlap of this repeal, what happens to those who don't pull their products, or take down their publicly displayed ads on time?

2018-01-06 18:49:55 UTC

but anything created after is def in jeopardy

2018-01-06 18:50:18 UTC

Pretty sure if 32 states pass medicinal marijuana or decriminalization of it, there will be nothing the FED can do because the majority of people will outrage over it

2018-01-06 18:50:37 UTC

If not already

2018-01-06 18:50:39 UTC

I would assume criminal charges would be filed, but then again the Fed hasn't neccessarily come out and said they were going to remove state's right to have legalized pot

2018-01-06 18:50:59 UTC

The repeal doesn't neccessarily entail that, unless new information has come out to which I was unaware

2018-01-06 18:51:39 UTC

@Kori Tainaka if you look throughout the union in general, basically everyone wants pot to be legalized, for whatever reason Sessions seems to have a personal vendetta against it and wants it removed entirely

2018-01-06 18:51:56 UTC

From what I've read, the Cole Memo was a "guidance document" and not an actual law. I don't know if that affects the outcome of its repeal

2018-01-06 18:52:04 UTC

Can you get in trouble for advertising or producing a product in the grey time between it being legal and illegal? It's this weird middle ground that I think would be worth looking into; it would be cool to hear from the farmer who started to buy seeds or even plant crops and now has to consider burnning it all. Or the company that has a warehouse of now-illegal product that they can either try to store for a later date secretly or destroy it now to stay safe.

2018-01-06 18:52:23 UTC

@Deleted User he's probably just one of those old people who thinks one marijuana joint is the equivalent to 20 years of smoking or something

2018-01-06 18:52:38 UTC

more like taking heroin

2018-01-06 18:52:44 UTC

idk why he believes this

2018-01-06 18:53:26 UTC

Like there isn't an evidence that suggests marijuana and heroin are even close to being on the same page, especially since heroins only real medinical use is for numbing pain, but we have plenty of other stuff for that

2018-01-06 18:53:32 UTC

so we obviously don't need it

2018-01-06 18:53:59 UTC

vs marijuana which has been shown to drastically help and improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson's disease for example

2018-01-06 18:54:04 UTC

Well that and the fact that big pharma pushes opioids these days

2018-01-06 18:54:12 UTC

wtf happened?

2018-01-06 18:54:13 UTC

2018-01-06 18:54:21 UTC

I left just now and I come back to a discussion.

2018-01-06 18:54:39 UTC

that's the other thing i don't understand, why the fuck is Sessions targetting marijuana when Trump literally announced the Fed would be going after the Opiod crisis like a week or two ago?

2018-01-06 18:54:43 UTC

Anyway, Trump a better make a good decision on this, because this kind of thing can swing a reelection
Don't take away people's drugs

2018-01-06 18:54:54 UTC

lol

2018-01-06 18:54:59 UTC

i dont think trump is going to get 2020

2018-01-06 18:55:05 UTC

neither do I tbh

2018-01-06 18:55:14 UTC

depends on the democrats

2018-01-06 18:55:16 UTC

I do not think the Republicans will be able to secure 2018 either

2018-01-06 18:55:21 UTC

the dems are in shambles too tho

2018-01-06 18:55:22 UTC

I'm reading a lot of speculation that the repeal of the Cole Memo may push Congress to fully legalize marijuana

2018-01-06 18:55:25 UTC

maybe its all over

2018-01-06 18:55:27 UTC

new parties?

2018-01-06 18:55:32 UTC

Perhaps

2018-01-06 18:55:35 UTC

the Media, although reknownly known as fake, has been nothing but negative

2018-01-06 18:55:39 UTC

Lol new parties never work

2018-01-06 18:55:43 UTC

I think it's all about the media and how they deal with it.

2018-01-06 18:55:44 UTC

Maybe a real libertarian party instead of the pussies we have

2018-01-06 18:55:44 UTC

Anyone up for starting the Timcast party? ๐Ÿ˜‹

2018-01-06 18:55:50 UTC

judging by the way the democrats have been going, they are going to get thrashed in 2018

2018-01-06 18:55:51 UTC

There's too much money and vested interest in keeping the two party system in place

2018-01-06 18:56:04 UTC

New Parties will never survive

2018-01-06 18:56:05 UTC

they haven't learned anything from 2016

2018-01-06 18:56:10 UTC

because if they do what they did for 2016 trump will hold 2020.

2018-01-06 18:56:10 UTC

We can have Tim as our leader

2018-01-06 18:56:14 UTC

lol

2018-01-06 18:56:19 UTC

Both are getting a little too confident

2018-01-06 18:56:22 UTC

The best and only real time for new parties would've been the 2016 election

2018-01-06 18:56:26 UTC

i dont want to be in charge of anything

2018-01-06 18:56:27 UTC

Lack of a proper opponent caused them to lower their guards

2018-01-06 18:56:37 UTC

<:ancap:294617629321199618> anarcho-capitalist party when

2018-01-06 18:56:41 UTC

They got fat.

2018-01-06 18:56:41 UTC

@Timcast What if we democratically elect you as our leader?

2018-01-06 18:56:43 UTC

Now people are so distraught over everything, that if a centrist party came out, both sides would attempt to destroy it

2018-01-06 18:56:49 UTC

neither does sargon but he is writing a manifesto lol

2018-01-06 18:56:51 UTC

Cant force someone apparently

2018-01-06 18:57:13 UTC

Well, good luck however. We will be watching

2018-01-06 18:57:36 UTC

thb I don't think he's getting 2020 either, but I think he has "served" an important purpose; he's made both political parties question everything and re-evaluate themselves. He mad the dems realize they don't have a base they can abuse continuously, the reps release their "youth vote" doesn't see eye-to-eye with their stuck in the mud attitude.

2018-01-06 18:57:36 UTC

where's my anarcho-nationalist people's socialist republics party of greater utah?

2018-01-06 18:58:13 UTC

Who knows really? It was only around a year ago people said he had no chance.

2018-01-06 18:58:24 UTC

Things can change drastically in a while.

2018-01-06 18:58:39 UTC

Or maybe people got too confident there.

2018-01-06 18:58:40 UTC

@Porcelain chips I'm not sure the Democrat or Republican parties as a whole are self-aware enough to realize that

2018-01-06 18:58:41 UTC

none of it really matters because either way the US is regressing towards Plato's republic

2018-01-06 18:58:44 UTC

@Porcelain chips Look at Democrats, everything they're doing currently points to them just waiting out Trump so they can get back to their agendas first in 2018 by repealing everything, and 2020 by "taking back" the Presidency

2018-01-06 18:58:48 UTC

that's all they want

2018-01-06 18:58:50 UTC

Tulsi Gabbard from Hawaii is DNC but seems reasonable. What about her as Presidential Candidate?

2018-01-06 18:58:53 UTC

Just to go back to their agendas

2018-01-06 18:59:12 UTC

or is she not in the suitpants-afficionado circle?

2018-01-06 18:59:14 UTC

Isnt it a narrative that theres a significant portion of people who are neither. Like the people who went Obama -> Bernie -> Trump?

2018-01-06 18:59:36 UTC

And didnt vote Johnson cause wasted vote

2018-01-06 18:59:45 UTC

@GingaBomber I was one of those

2018-01-06 18:59:57 UTC

Down to the T?

2018-01-06 19:00:01 UTC

Yep

Tulsi Gabbard won't get the support from the party, they will go for someone like Andrew Cuomo instead

2018-01-06 19:00:07 UTC

Huh... Okay then

2018-01-06 19:00:25 UTC

Didnt expect that to be an answer

2018-01-06 19:00:29 UTC

Just because it's a "narrative" doesn't mean it doesn't have some truth to it

2018-01-06 19:00:57 UTC

Well, I kinda made it up from memory. I mean I have seen people admit that

2018-01-06 19:00:59 UTC

well, a shame that good people cant get up by their own merits anymore ๐Ÿ˜‰

2018-01-06 19:01:06 UTC

Most just wanted change

2018-01-06 19:01:25 UTC

And well, people like those 3 being candidates were a symtom, people wanted to be back in control

2018-01-06 19:01:39 UTC

Rock the boat as people say

2018-01-06 19:02:08 UTC

Honestly, I think what we need before another alternative party (because technically, the Libertarians *are* an alternative) is term limits and age limits for all political offices

2018-01-06 19:02:21 UTC

Hillary really alienated me from the dems. I've always voted blue but then I got a letter a few weeks before the election; it was her "thanking" me for my support. I am on disability and have never donated to the party. My father and other family members have. They never got a thank you letter. I did. I am the only woman in the family; the ones who donated and supported her were hard-working men; this really broke me and made me distance myself from her entirely.

2018-01-06 19:03:01 UTC

Pics of the letter with names blacked out?

2018-01-06 19:03:18 UTC

Or not actually, I might be able to google it

2018-01-06 19:03:24 UTC

so you saw this as pandering to you as part of a special interest group? well, thats pretty corporate huh

2018-01-06 19:03:32 UTC

bad style

2018-01-06 19:03:47 UTC

Or they didnt think she would have noticed

2018-01-06 19:03:50 UTC

@GingaBomber I'll have to go find it. It's a generic letter but the rest of my family never recieved one.

2018-01-06 19:04:03 UTC

Ah thanks anyway.

2018-01-06 19:04:15 UTC

Do DM it to me, in case of all the comments flood it out

2018-01-06 19:04:17 UTC

If you okay

2018-01-06 19:04:23 UTC

Okay.

2018-01-06 19:04:41 UTC

Should clarify that I aint american, but I found the politics there fascinating

2018-01-06 19:05:02 UTC

I'm a gay guy, and I voted for Trump because of numerous reasons, but what made me interested in politics in general was first #Gamergate, and second was in political conversations, people would speak on my behalf/imply that I was "obviously" a democrat because I was gay

2018-01-06 19:05:08 UTC

Really pissed me off

2018-01-06 19:05:10 UTC

I'm of the opinion that, with the exception of tyrannical parties, the outcome of elections is mostly irrelevant, increasingly so as time goes on. What really matters is the ideas and morals of the society. This is what really shapes the fate of a country.

2018-01-06 19:05:14 UTC

And well... Kinda rooted for them the whole way, cause if it aint the US being No1 in military, it will be either Russia or China

2018-01-06 19:05:29 UTC

And I dont trust either. So well, lesser evils and all that

2018-01-06 19:05:50 UTC

Well, it always boils down to the people really.

2018-01-06 19:06:03 UTC

Culture?

2018-01-06 19:06:37 UTC

culture comes from principles

2018-01-06 19:06:42 UTC

Fascinating actually, GG isnt something I see discussed outside KIA in a possitive light

2018-01-06 19:06:59 UTC

I mean, i kinda got jaded with the media after that

2018-01-06 19:07:14 UTC

@WOODY I disagree, policies are vastly more important, it is the morality of wanting to help others that has led us directly into this finacial crisis which our generation will be paying off for our entire lives, as well as our children's lives.

2018-01-06 19:07:15 UTC

Found Pool after that. Well, went after alternative news

2018-01-06 19:07:43 UTC

I mean, man... The journey.

2018-01-06 19:07:53 UTC

@GingaBomber You find American politics interesting? I prefer satire based on American politics:

The Ephebians believed that every man should have the vote. Every five years someone was elected to be Tyrant, provided he could prove that he was honest, intelligent, sensible, and trustworthy. Immediately after he was elected, of course, it was obvious to everyone that he was a criminal madman and totally out of touch with the view of the ordinary philosopher in the streets looking for a towel. And then five years later they elected another one just like him, and really it was amazing how intelligent people kept on making the same mistakes.

- Terry Pratchett, *Small Gods*

I think American politics is so dynamic because of sort of the frontier history; it's a young country that has had to give the middle finger and fight a lot. It had to go from 3rd world to first world in 200 years. In the late 1800s half of the country was still living in a way that is comparible now to a lot of developing countries, while the other half was 1st world and both ends were trying to create enough infelstructure to have everything even across the board.

2018-01-06 19:08:24 UTC

Oh god, I need more clips, cause that ones so true

2018-01-06 19:08:37 UTC

Well, does not help that the people we want in politics dont want to be in it

2018-01-06 19:09:00 UTC

You get the power hungry and the greedy, since they are the ones with the initiative to run for it

2018-01-06 19:09:09 UTC

@Deleted User are you suggesting that the only moral choices are to help others? I recently read Atlas Shrugged, and the objectivists would argue that altruism is actually immoral.

2018-01-06 19:09:25 UTC

And well, people dont like to be forced into a duty they did not wish for

2018-01-06 19:10:03 UTC

@WOODY I would say that helping others in of itself is a virtuous thing to do that lines up with Western Values, but Democrats and the left has taken it to an extreme, slowly and progressively in the last 50 years

2018-01-06 19:10:41 UTC

What if say it was a difference in empathy then?

2018-01-06 19:10:54 UTC

Or to whom the altruism was directed against?

2018-01-06 19:11:21 UTC

Like the Repubs being American citizens, especially the vets and the homeless, while to the Dems, minorities

2018-01-06 19:11:36 UTC

@Deleted User I would agree that it aligns with Western values, but disagree that it is virtuous to sacrifice your own values and happiness for others. The democrats are merely taking this principle towards it's logical conclusion. Just as the Socialists in Russia did.

2018-01-06 19:12:00 UTC

Oh god, @Timcast We need a discussion channel
