Hi @Timcast , got a few suggestions for you: 1. create an admin only channel for posting announcements/new videos etc. 2. create multiple voice channels and limit them to say, 20 users 3. add a suggestions board which people can post on for the moderators to see.
the kekistan discord is quite a good example of a well ordered public server, with one text channel per topic etc.
yeah its not for everyone, but their structure is definitely worth imitating
you have to be explicit with your rules though, as ambiguous rules are designed to be broken. If you want to create a healthy discourse, you need objective rules that can easily be judged by moderators.
@balticnapo max raises a good point in that video, but you are missing the point. The point is not whether or not the rules are objective, the point is that we should be striving to get as close as possible to an objective set of rules, and since this is a discord server linked directly to Tim, it shouldn't be that hard to find a set of rules that we agree on the necessity of, because we are likely coming from a similar point of principle, i.e. something close to the principles of freedom of speech and free discussion. Keeping that in mind, that is what we should design the rules to protect.
also, a lot of the point of that video is that ais are now determining what people see online and catering specifically to their biases.
i.e. the ais are designed to cater for maximum engagement rather than maximum objectivity and truth.
yeah, but as with all things, its better to do some forward planning with some kind of vision, because that increases the likelihood of you achieving that vision, so I'm just asking the mods to think about what they want to see on this server and how they are going to achieve that.
yeah but you aren't a mod so your goal may be different to the mods ๐
use a different bot then? theres plenty of bots around for all sorts of things.
@Timcast I would be grateful if you would read my suggestions further up, some of them could be quite helpful.
judging by the way the democrats have been going, they are going to get thrashed in 2018
neither does sargon but he is writing a manifesto lol
none of it really matters because either way the US is regressing towards Plato's republic
Tulsi Gabbard won't get the support from the party, they will go for someone like Andrew Cuomo instead
I'm of the opinion that, with the exception of tyrannical parties, the outcome of elections is mostly irrelevant, increasingly so as time goes on. What really matters is the ideas and morals of the society. This is what really shapes the fate of a country.
@Deleted User are you suggesting that the only moral choices are to help others? I recently read Atlas Shrugged, and the objectivists would argue that altruism is actually immoral.
@Deleted User I would agree that it aligns with Western values, but disagree that it is virtuous to sacrifice your own values and happiness for others. The democrats are merely taking this principle towards it's logical conclusion. Just as the Socialists in Russia did.
no, I could see people typing when I first joined
@Timcast any mods can we have a channel for discussion/debate please? a voice channel would be good too.
we don't know because the server isn't set up yet.
interesting video by the economist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utW1F-QuYq8 @Timcast might be worth trying to interview this guy.

debating isnt about creating instant counter-arguments, debaters always come into a debate with prepared notes based on what they think the other person will argue.
follow the teaching of Sun Tzu: know your enemy and know yourself.
if you are confident that its an ambush, don't take the debate.
well if you plan on debating random people, make sure you know your own position.
to the point where you can predict and debunk or deconstruct the opposing arguments.
you dont have to know the minute details, you just have to know what your premises are. From that, you can reason out the rest of your position
technically, debates aren't about truth, they are about convincing the audience.
thats why you need to be able to control your emotions
there are ways to control your emotions, I understand that its harder for some people, but you can do it if you follow a methodology like Buddhism for example.
Destiny isn't a good debater, he just takes easy targets
when he comes across someone with a coherent position, he just ends up going "WaAaAhT!?!?"
like I said, he doesn't debate with good opponents, he just gets random people on twitter and pulls them into a debate.
and then when Sargon debated with him, he had a hissy fit and DMCAs his second channel for putting clips of the debate on it.
he doesn't have a well fleshed out view of politics
he was at serious risk of romanticising the alt-right
he's a funny guy, I like him, but I don't think a lot of the opinions he gave in that debate weren't his own.
I think he, like a lot of people, is just a displaced leftie
its fine not to do a debate that you aren't confident with
if you want to do the debate, I'm not going to stop you, but I'm just saying that 1.you should prepare before hand and 2.remember that the debate is about convincing the audience
Tbh, I like your attitude a lot, because you are taking the responsibility of learning into your own hands.
its better to go into the debate with a solid understanding than to just appeal to emotions and push logical fallacies.
