2018-01-06 17:30:16 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Hi @Timcast , got a few suggestions for you: 1. create an admin only channel for posting announcements/new videos etc. 2. create multiple voice channels and limit them to say, 20 users 3. add a suggestions board which people can post on for the moderators to see.

2018-01-06 17:33:37 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

the kekistan discord is quite a good example of a well ordered public server, with one text channel per topic etc.

2018-01-06 17:34:06 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

several thousand users

2018-01-06 17:35:08 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yeah its not for everyone, but their structure is definitely worth imitating

2018-01-06 17:36:28 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

also, you guys need an faq/rules section asap

2018-01-06 17:37:56 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yes, keep the rules brief

2018-01-06 17:39:43 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

thats a good start

2018-01-06 17:41:13 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

you have to be explicit with your rules though, as ambiguous rules are designed to be broken. If you want to create a healthy discourse, you need objective rules that can easily be judged by moderators.

2018-01-06 17:42:20 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

exactly

2018-01-06 17:42:29 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

thats what Tim's video today was saying

2018-01-06 17:55:51 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

@balticnapo max raises a good point in that video, but you are missing the point. The point is not whether or not the rules are objective, the point is that we should be striving to get as close as possible to an objective set of rules, and since this is a discord server linked directly to Tim, it shouldn't be that hard to find a set of rules that we agree on the necessity of, because we are likely coming from a similar point of principle, i.e. something close to the principles of freedom of speech and free discussion. Keeping that in mind, that is what we should design the rules to protect.

2018-01-06 17:56:33 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

also, a lot of the point of that video is that ais are now determining what people see online and catering specifically to their biases.

2018-01-06 17:57:10 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

i.e. the ais are designed to cater for maximum engagement rather than maximum objectivity and truth.

2018-01-06 17:57:34 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

which can lead to the exact opposite of this

2018-01-06 18:26:42 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yeah, but as with all things, its better to do some forward planning with some kind of vision, because that increases the likelihood of you achieving that vision, so I'm just asking the mods to think about what they want to see on this server and how they are going to achieve that.

2018-01-06 18:27:55 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

lol

2018-01-06 18:28:56 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yeah but you aren't a mod so your goal may be different to the mods ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

2018-01-06 18:36:57 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

@Bruce @Timcast another suggestion: set up a moderation bot to help deal with minor moderation issues that occur often (role management is generally a good thing for bots)

2018-01-06 18:37:34 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

it will also help if and when a raid occurs

2018-01-06 18:37:49 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

you just make a role for the bot

2018-01-06 18:37:56 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

its not too hard

2018-01-06 18:39:45 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

use a different bot then? theres plenty of bots around for all sorts of things.

2018-01-06 18:44:27 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

@Timcast I would be grateful if you would read my suggestions further up, some of them could be quite helpful.

2018-01-06 18:55:14 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

depends on the democrats

2018-01-06 18:55:50 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

judging by the way the democrats have been going, they are going to get thrashed in 2018

2018-01-06 18:56:05 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

they haven't learned anything from 2016

2018-01-06 18:56:14 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

lol

2018-01-06 18:56:49 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

neither does sargon but he is writing a manifesto lol

2018-01-06 18:58:41 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

none of it really matters because either way the US is regressing towards Plato's republic

2018-01-06 19:00:06 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Tulsi Gabbard won't get the support from the party, they will go for someone like Andrew Cuomo instead

2018-01-06 19:05:10 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I'm of the opinion that, with the exception of tyrannical parties, the outcome of elections is mostly irrelevant, increasingly so as time goes on. What really matters is the ideas and morals of the society. This is what really shapes the fate of a country.

2018-01-06 19:06:37 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

culture comes from principles

2018-01-06 19:09:09 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

@Deleted User are you suggesting that the only moral choices are to help others? I recently read Atlas Shrugged, and the objectivists would argue that altruism is actually immoral.

2018-01-06 19:11:36 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

@Deleted User I would agree that it aligns with Western values, but disagree that it is virtuous to sacrifice your own values and happiness for others. The democrats are merely taking this principle towards it's logical conclusion. Just as the Socialists in Russia did.

2018-01-06 19:12:06 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

please

2018-01-06 19:13:01 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I agree

2018-01-06 19:14:34 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

no, I could see people typing when I first joined

2018-01-06 19:16:17 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

@Timcast any mods can we have a channel for discussion/debate please? a voice channel would be good too.

2018-01-06 19:16:52 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

hi

2018-01-06 19:17:27 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

sorry ๐Ÿ˜

2018-01-06 19:19:17 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

we don't know because the server isn't set up yet.

2018-01-06 19:19:19 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

lol

interesting video by the economist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utW1F-QuYq8 @Timcast might be worth trying to interview this guy.

2018-01-22 23:24:43 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

debating isnt about creating instant counter-arguments, debaters always come into a debate with prepared notes based on what they think the other person will argue.

2018-01-22 23:25:00 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

*good debaters

2018-01-22 23:25:24 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yes, and thats why you prepare

2018-01-22 23:25:52 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

follow the teaching of Sun Tzu: know your enemy and know yourself.

2018-01-22 23:26:56 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

if you are confident that its an ambush, don't take the debate.

2018-01-22 23:27:28 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

well if you plan on debating random people, make sure you know your own position.

2018-01-22 23:27:59 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

to the point where you can predict and debunk or deconstruct the opposing arguments.

2018-01-22 23:29:08 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

you dont have to know the minute details, you just have to know what your premises are. From that, you can reason out the rest of your position

2018-01-22 23:29:35 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

technically, debates aren't about truth, they are about convincing the audience.

2018-01-22 23:30:08 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

that makes them a hipocrite

2018-01-22 23:30:55 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

thats why you need to be able to control your emotions

2018-01-22 23:32:08 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

there are ways to control your emotions, I understand that its harder for some people, but you can do it if you follow a methodology like Buddhism for example.

2018-01-22 23:32:43 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

you have to essentially learn how not to care

2018-01-22 23:33:05 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

thats not what I mean

2018-01-22 23:33:42 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Destiny isn't a good debater, he just takes easy targets

2018-01-22 23:34:23 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

when he comes across someone with a coherent position, he just ends up going "WaAaAhT!?!?"

2018-01-22 23:35:02 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yeah

2018-01-22 23:35:33 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

like I said, he doesn't debate with good opponents, he just gets random people on twitter and pulls them into a debate.

2018-01-22 23:36:19 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

and then when Sargon debated with him, he had a hissy fit and DMCAs his second channel for putting clips of the debate on it.

2018-01-22 23:36:31 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

that or OmniDestiny

2018-01-22 23:37:36 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Jontron isn't that smart

2018-01-22 23:37:49 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

he doesn't have a well fleshed out view of politics

2018-01-22 23:37:57 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

he shouldn't have taken the debate

2018-01-22 23:38:27 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

he was at serious risk of romanticising the alt-right

2018-01-22 23:39:26 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

he's a funny guy, I like him, but I don't think a lot of the opinions he gave in that debate weren't his own.

2018-01-22 23:40:01 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

I think he, like a lot of people, is just a displaced leftie

2018-01-22 23:40:45 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

yeah, he is literally reiterating my point.

2018-01-22 23:40:59 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

then don't do it

2018-01-22 23:41:13 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

its fine not to do a debate that you aren't confident with

2018-01-22 23:42:19 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

if you want to do the debate, I'm not going to stop you, but I'm just saying that 1.you should prepare before hand and 2.remember that the debate is about convincing the audience

2018-01-22 23:43:12 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

Tbh, I like your attitude a lot, because you are taking the responsibility of learning into your own hands.

2018-01-22 23:44:09 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

its better to go into the debate with a solid understanding than to just appeal to emotions and push logical fallacies.

2018-01-22 23:45:03 UTC [Subverse #newsroom]

In my opinion, you are only biased so much as you are using your emotions and not using rational thought.
