Has any of you successfully changed the outlook of a leftist

2018-09-04 05:19:14 UTC

I want to try

2018-09-04 05:19:34 UTC

And I need info if it is possible and how

2018-09-04 05:20:25 UTC

I moved my sister to center left

2018-09-04 05:20:40 UTC

I'm convinced I could repeat the process given time

2018-09-04 05:20:47 UTC

With a non relative

2018-09-04 05:20:51 UTC

Ok

2018-09-04 05:20:55 UTC

How did you do it

2018-09-04 05:21:14 UTC

Did you hit her with facts over and over again?

2018-09-04 05:21:31 UTC

Start off with the obviously ridiculous examples at the extreme end of what prominent voices are actually saying, play devil's advocate for a moderate right wing position

2018-09-04 05:21:39 UTC

Openly devils advocate mind

2018-09-04 05:21:48 UTC

I'd say the most important thing to do is first figure out whether they're discussing things in good faith with you or not. If you want to change people's minds you typically need to be understanding of their views and empathetic. But that will just get you taken advantage of by the typical far left talking points

2018-09-04 05:21:50 UTC

Like "well they probably think this"

2018-09-04 05:22:04 UTC

That too yeah, they have to be willing to listen

2018-09-04 05:22:15 UTC

A lot don't

2018-09-04 05:22:22 UTC

They just shut you up

2018-09-04 05:22:33 UTC

Or just shout

2018-09-04 05:22:57 UTC

If it's a public conversation with someone like that then it's probably impossible especially with their friends coming to back them up, but you can at least give them enough rope to hang themselves and maybe convince any spectators that they might not be in the right

2018-09-04 05:24:14 UTC

But yeah, just constantly telling someone "you're wrong" is almost never going to work regardless of how many facts you have to back it up. People dig their heels into the ground and double down when someone acts like that since they don't care about who's right so much as 'winning' the discussion and probably more importantly not letting you 'win'

2018-09-04 05:24:16 UTC

I would say it needs to be private conversations with people you already have some sort of relationship with

2018-09-04 05:24:38 UTC

I shifted a friend on Antifa

2018-09-04 05:24:46 UTC

Wow

2018-09-04 05:24:55 UTC

That is impressive

2018-09-04 05:25:03 UTC

By explaining that they define shit so broadly that it puts me in danger

2018-09-04 05:25:09 UTC

And others like me

2018-09-04 05:25:12 UTC

Do speeches ever work

2018-09-04 05:25:14 UTC

Like

2018-09-04 05:25:21 UTC

Fact presentations

2018-09-04 05:25:30 UTC

That happen to touch the topic

2018-09-04 05:25:31 UTC

"I have a dream" shit doesn't work, and raw statistics isn't ideal

2018-09-04 05:25:44 UTC

Make it all personal and localized

2018-09-04 05:26:01 UTC

"This is how this could affect you or someone like you"

2018-09-04 05:26:03 UTC

If they don't agree and aren't actually interested in understanding your view that's just going to bore and annoy them

2018-09-04 05:26:11 UTC

Present your ideas from an empathetic standpoint

2018-09-04 05:26:56 UTC

The left wing narrative right now is all about targeted empathy. Divert the course of the river

2018-09-04 05:27:25 UTC

I don't think there's any one real answer to this question. But deeply understanding their views and how to properly explain your own is probably the most important thing to it.

2018-09-04 05:27:28 UTC

Lile making class speeches about class shit that happens to touch a topic. Just drop a kernel of truth there. And there. And just kinda show them all the facts with credited science sources they can check by themselves.

2018-09-04 05:27:36 UTC

Can such a scheme work

2018-09-04 05:27:54 UTC

I am in Cali I remind you

2018-09-04 05:28:20 UTC

It is hard to maka just a speech with a 180 opinion

2018-09-04 05:28:59 UTC

Most of the far left regressivism sounds like it makes sense and is morally right on first viewing and that makes it a very awkward sort of thing to counter

2018-09-04 05:29:33 UTC

Yeah don't do public attempts

2018-09-04 05:29:50 UTC

Nobody wants to be publicly humiliated, so they'll fight you harder

2018-09-04 05:30:12 UTC

I actually was kinda supportive of the left like 2 years ago when I was 13. But I looked into that shit and just realized how dumb it was

2018-09-04 05:30:14 UTC

Convince individuals, and keep them in mind when you try to convince them

2018-09-04 05:30:50 UTC

I flipped from moderate left to ancap when I was 15 or 16, then slowly ramped back to libertarian

2018-09-04 05:31:03 UTC

Can such things happen to others and can I influence that happening and not have a direct convo about it

2018-09-04 05:31:06 UTC

And that was prior to a lot of the sj nonsenae

2018-09-04 05:31:10 UTC

Nonsense*

2018-09-04 05:32:04 UTC

I would say you could try bringing it up in class once you know the lay of the land and have made some progress

2018-09-04 05:32:12 UTC

There's a lot of dumb shit on both sides. Sadly it seems like most of the active and vocal left is currently the one spouting the dumbest shit. I still consider myself pretty solidly left leaning in my thinking despite how much disdain I have for the modern left itself.

2018-09-04 05:32:28 UTC

I am a Libertarian

2018-09-04 05:32:44 UTC

You've got a lot more work to do then lol

2018-09-04 05:32:55 UTC

That is the right I think in this political hellhole

2018-09-04 05:33:07 UTC

And left are dipshits

2018-09-04 05:33:16 UTC

Basically

2018-09-04 05:33:26 UTC

Not exactly Authoritarian

2018-09-04 05:33:30 UTC

Bit dipshits

2018-09-04 05:33:54 UTC

I would try to eliminate that kind of thinking

2018-09-04 05:34:00 UTC

If you want to convince people

2018-09-04 05:34:01 UTC

I think most people here are pretty heavily libertarian in their values, though I don't think there are than many that identify with the current Libertarian party

2018-09-04 05:34:35 UTC

I find most people are big govt when it suits them

2018-09-04 05:34:47 UTC

Though I'm also in leafland, so that may have something to do with it

2018-09-04 05:34:55 UTC

Even anarchists call the police sometimes

2018-09-04 05:35:03 UTC

But I suspect the lefty states are like that too

2018-09-04 05:35:23 UTC

Law enforcement isn't big government, but it is funny seeing that happen yes

2018-09-04 05:36:03 UTC

Not all libertarians are opposed to big govt. Like look at how big of an idol Thomas Paine is to libertarians, yet he supported UBI and many types of UBS out of his libertarian values

2018-09-04 05:36:22 UTC

But I'd say it's more a case of most people are hypocrites when it suits them

2018-09-04 05:36:35 UTC

UBI isn't necessarily "Big Govt"

2018-09-04 05:36:38 UTC

Like I believe in free speech(including all kinds of "hate speech'), guns, and true gender and racial equality. By normal terms I am a 100% liberal. But by US terms I am against all that "liberals" stand for

2018-09-04 05:36:40 UTC

I think you can like some aspects of someone's ideology without taking in the whole thing

2018-09-04 05:36:54 UTC

I'm not sure I can actually say he supported such a thing

2018-09-04 05:37:15 UTC

If you find a gold bar in a trash can you just take the gold bar. And not the whole thing

2018-09-04 05:37:50 UTC

Most political terminology seems to be entirely relative to whoever you ask's ideology.

2018-09-04 05:37:59 UTC

UBI is directly redistributive. Id say that goes against libertarian values. That doesnt mean all welfare systems are fucked forever though

2018-09-04 05:38:22 UTC

Welfare is ok imo

2018-09-04 05:38:29 UTC

Leaf here, can confirm that my country is autistic. I've met SJW types who are calling for a centralised government to control the lives of everyone. Please McNuke us

2018-09-04 05:38:30 UTC

A bit socialist I dare say

2018-09-04 05:38:34 UTC

But it helps

2018-09-04 05:39:00 UTC

Socialism does not have any sort of monopoly on social programs. They've existed far longer than the idea of Socialism has.

2018-09-04 05:39:10 UTC

I mean

2018-09-04 05:39:12 UTC

Yes

2018-09-04 05:39:28 UTC

Yeah

2018-09-04 05:39:35 UTC

Sharing is caring

2018-09-04 05:40:09 UTC

Like I am a 100% liberal in scientific terms

2018-09-04 05:40:29 UTC

But I am not

2018-09-04 05:40:31 UTC

How

2018-09-04 05:40:36 UTC

I think government should only intervene where the market is not doing a better job

2018-09-04 05:40:48 UTC

Socialists are very quick to using ideas like health care as a trojan horse for their ideology, and those opposed to welfare are quick to use Socialism's horrors to discredit them, but they are entirely separate from each other.

2018-09-04 05:40:51 UTC

So like, I don't expect a market solution for mental health care, or orphans

2018-09-04 05:41:00 UTC

I like the idea of everyone pitching in to help the less fortunate.

I dont like the idea of being taxed into oblivion so that junkies and reforming terrorists can have a house thrice the size of mine

2018-09-04 05:41:17 UTC

^

2018-09-04 05:41:19 UTC

Yes

2018-09-04 05:41:20 UTC

But I would expect one for health care more generally

2018-09-04 05:41:28 UTC

Beemann, how about this: orphans as therapy pets

2018-09-04 05:41:32 UTC

Kek

2018-09-04 05:41:34 UTC

Lmao

2018-09-04 05:41:40 UTC

General health care is hell

2018-09-04 05:41:42 UTC

Like

2018-09-04 05:41:48 UTC

I am from Ukraine

2018-09-04 05:42:00 UTC

I loved that anecdote about the cat lady who stopped caring about her cat when she had a baby

2018-09-04 05:42:02 UTC

The 27 year old country

2018-09-04 05:42:08 UTC

Most shelters won't adopt out Black Cats around halloween for fear of people sacrificing them

2018-09-04 05:42:19 UTC

What

2018-09-04 05:42:20 UTC

Would orphanages not allow adoptions of gingers?

2018-09-04 05:42:30 UTC

The NHS is good *and* bad, it's convenient but quality is low

2018-09-04 05:43:19 UTC

I actually think that satanism with animal sacrifices should be registered as an official religion

2018-09-04 05:43:24 UTC

I once had a doctor tell me he wouldn't give me advice on contraception as an off-the-cuff question because my appointment was for tonsillitis and I needed to book another appointment

2018-09-04 05:43:29 UTC

And have churches and shit

2018-09-04 05:43:46 UTC

It is in the US, though I don't know about the sacrifices

2018-09-04 05:43:49 UTC

Another time I waited an hour and a half to get told my blood test results were fine

2018-09-04 05:44:28 UTC

I have a question

2018-09-04 05:44:35 UTC

Shoot

2018-09-04 05:44:39 UTC

So

2018-09-04 05:45:20 UTC

In Ukraine if you came to a hospital sick af you would get put in line for like an hour on a busy day mins

2018-09-04 05:45:49 UTC

What if you are sick af 100f temp and you go to a hospital in US

2018-09-04 05:46:03 UTC

Do they give you a fucking appointment as they always do

2018-09-04 05:46:08 UTC

They'll treat people according to who is most urgent

2018-09-04 05:46:24 UTC

So not a week but 3 days

2018-09-04 05:47:36 UTC

Well outside of maybe some rural areas I can't imagine there are many people in the US who live in a place where anyone couldn't get an appointment for something like that within 3 days

2018-09-04 05:48:02 UTC

You just might have to find a different doctor from your usual if he's fully booked

2018-09-04 05:48:33 UTC

Ok den

2018-09-04 05:48:39 UTC

I have to go tbh

2018-09-04 05:48:48 UTC

Need tob sleep

2018-09-04 05:49:06 UTC

Gotta wake up at 6:30 and I love my sleep schedule

2018-09-04 05:49:09 UTC

Have a good night man

2018-09-04 05:49:31 UTC

In Canuckistan we've had people die on waiting lists

2018-09-04 05:49:40 UTC

Including babies with easily treatable shit

2018-09-04 05:49:40 UTC

You guys having good days?

2018-09-04 05:49:58 UTC

Oof, that's horrible

2018-09-04 05:50:02 UTC

One guy for saved by Murrican healthcare+travel insurance because he couldn't be sent back to an Ontario hospital

2018-09-04 05:50:08 UTC

They were all full

2018-09-04 05:50:27 UTC

Our hospitals often run well over capacity. 120-150%

2018-09-04 05:52:18 UTC

The fuck

2018-09-04 06:11:03 UTC

woo

2018-09-04 07:05:17 UTC

People make fun of canadians as having good healthcare

2018-09-04 07:05:25 UTC

But I also heard shit like waiting lists.

2018-09-04 07:05:51 UTC

Most socialists I listen say canadians are good because everyone is "covered"

2018-09-04 07:12:05 UTC

my Canadian best friend's girlfriend had to wait for months to see a doctor just to be told that her chronic pain wasn't real and then she went right back onto a waiting list

2018-09-04 07:16:31 UTC

anyone here lives in a rural town?

2018-09-04 07:17:02 UTC

what a random question

2018-09-04 07:18:39 UTC

I live in a somewhat rural town

2018-09-04 07:19:00 UTC
2018-09-04 07:28:10 UTC

hmm

2018-09-04 07:28:31 UTC

can i ask you something totally random? lol

2018-09-04 07:28:38 UTC

how fast is your internet?

2018-09-04 07:31:37 UTC

anyone here comfy in bed delaying the inevitible arrival of morning?

2018-09-04 07:31:58 UTC

and if so how fast is your internet?

2018-09-04 07:36:13 UTC

I'm on my home PC and my internet is slow as balls, although I'm far from the router and I think a cable's broke, so

2018-09-04 07:36:27 UTC

@Deleted User My internet is not good, not bad.

2018-09-04 07:36:47 UTC

about 700kps down, 60kps up

2018-09-04 07:42:17 UTC

I was for a bit. Internet was plenty fast: 60down/30up. I was put on a shared business plan by the apartment complex.

2018-09-04 07:42:27 UTC

That's MBps. It's well into Broadband.

2018-09-04 07:43:13 UTC

The only time I've had faster Internet was the one time I was on a university connection and they had gigabit and metered out "small" portions for people to use on that connection. That easily hit the hundreds of Mbs.

2018-09-04 07:44:26 UTC

The business plan was semi-rural. The Uni was urban.

2018-09-04 07:44:48 UTC

hmm

2018-09-04 07:44:55 UTC

Why do you ask?

2018-09-04 07:45:42 UTC

iw ould have imagine by 2020 everybody would have at least 100/100 connection

2018-09-04 07:45:50 UTC

Maybe

2018-09-04 07:45:55 UTC

The thing is, what would you use it for?

2018-09-04 07:46:02 UTC

To sum up how spiky my internet is, just did a connection test and apparently I'm 90kps down, 5mbs up. My internet speed changed *as I was taking a connection test.* Yyyyyyup.

2018-09-04 07:46:16 UTC

I wish I had better speeds

2018-09-04 07:46:23 UTC

mostly better up speeds

2018-09-04 07:46:36 UTC

because I'm regularly uploading multiple gigabyte server backups

2018-09-04 07:46:46 UTC

which takes hours and hours

2018-09-04 07:47:08 UTC

I'm not going to ask why you'd be doing that. Except to say, where are you doing server backups to?

2018-09-04 07:47:17 UTC

all that furry porn

2018-09-04 07:47:35 UTC

@pratel I keep offsite backups of my server

2018-09-04 07:47:44 UTC

as well as a lot of my personal files

2018-09-04 07:47:55 UTC

Yeah, I should be doing offsite backups but I don't know of a good place to do it.

2018-09-04 07:48:02 UTC

Which is why I'm asking.

2018-09-04 07:48:13 UTC

when a kangeroo's baby gets stolen, is that pickpocketing or kidnapping?

2018-09-04 07:48:16 UTC

I don't trust Google and am kinda skeptical of paying alot of money.

2018-09-04 07:48:22 UTC
2018-09-04 07:48:26 UTC

It's encrypted by your keys

2018-09-04 07:48:45 UTC

@>Cytos, de lieve goede synth kidnapping. You go with the strongest charge in court.

2018-09-04 07:49:34 UTC

But yeah, don't ever trust Google with your files

2018-09-04 07:49:38 UTC

It'd be theft because animals are counted as property though, right?

2018-09-04 07:49:57 UTC

Like, kidnapping would imply we're treating the kangaroo as human

2018-09-04 07:50:52 UTC

I suppose if nobody owns the kangaroo it's a different question

2018-09-04 07:50:58 UTC

man, im thinkin in setting up a ssh server and see if i can tunnel in with my phone

2018-09-04 07:51:10 UTC

''free phone internet''

2018-09-04 07:51:43 UTC

SHH (sftp when talking about file management) is a good transport strategy, but you've got to think about the destination as well

2018-09-04 07:51:45 UTC

@Termer Totally agree. I'm trying to de-google. Would de-microsoft, but good luck with that.

Was actually looking into Spideroak. Mega.nz looks cheaper though.

2018-09-04 07:52:24 UTC

@Vigil i dont have any context as to what youre referring to, kidnapping an animal would be poaching.

2018-09-04 07:52:33 UTC

I've not used a Google or Microsoft product in about a year, other than youtube, which I automatically download my subscriptions via a script through Tor @pratel

2018-09-04 07:52:34 UTC

mega also supports kim dot com, who's politics and activism you may or may not appreciate

2018-09-04 07:52:49 UTC

only if you pay

2018-09-04 07:52:55 UTC

I like Kim Dotcom, seems like a decent guy

2018-09-04 07:52:56 UTC

Isnt kim the guy from megaupload

2018-09-04 07:52:59 UTC

yes

2018-09-04 07:53:07 UTC

And he makes rap songs or something

2018-09-04 07:53:13 UTC

@Termer How did you get around Windows OS? Or are you using some kind of FOSS OS?

2018-09-04 07:53:18 UTC

man mega has survived all this time

2018-09-04 07:53:24 UTC

I remember seeing the interview he did with Tim

2018-09-04 07:53:27 UTC

@pratel I use Ubuntu

2018-09-04 07:53:36 UTC

A linux distro

2018-09-04 07:53:39 UTC

I've become skeptical of Ubuntu lately.

2018-09-04 07:53:45 UTC

They've been doing stuff.

2018-09-04 07:53:47 UTC

?

2018-09-04 07:53:54 UTC

Endless is really cool

2018-09-04 07:53:54 UTC

I'll switch to Debian when Canonical goes rogue

2018-09-04 07:54:08 UTC

But it doesn't have too many applications

2018-09-04 07:54:13 UTC

are we talking about ''they again?

2018-09-04 07:54:19 UTC

I've kicked around using Arch. But then I remember all the stuff I really need Windows for.

2018-09-04 07:54:49 UTC

I've not used a windows application in a long time, since most of my software is available on linux and I don't play games

2018-09-04 07:55:01 UTC

No idea who "they" is supposed to be. I was referring to Canonical.

2018-09-04 07:55:13 UTC

I don't like Canonical, but Ubuntu is nice

2018-09-04 07:55:15 UTC

Making weird partnerships, doing unusual programs and including lots of strange additions to their UI that could be used for monitoring.

2018-09-04 07:55:36 UTC

The only reason I use Ubuntu over plain debian is because of the Ubuntu universe

2018-09-04 07:55:47 UTC

ubuntu is nice

2018-09-04 07:55:53 UTC

I've used ubuntu and still have it installed. Mostly because it's easy.

2018-09-04 07:56:02 UTC

But I've been thinking of transitioning off.

2018-09-04 07:56:10 UTC

I'm still stuck on Windows by any means.

2018-09-04 07:56:14 UTC

Office, mostly.

2018-09-04 07:56:17 UTC

Then some gaming.

2018-09-04 07:56:29 UTC

And no, LibreOffice is not a good substitute.

2018-09-04 07:56:33 UTC

oh

2018-09-04 07:56:38 UTC

you stopped me in my tracks

2018-09-04 07:56:44 UTC

how come?

2018-09-04 07:56:53 UTC

You can use office as a web app.

2018-09-04 07:57:03 UTC

It's like MS Office but it crashes if someone sends you any moderately complicated office file.

2018-09-04 07:57:12 UTC

It also is like Office was back in 2008.

2018-09-04 07:57:18 UTC

I like it, it gets the job done.

2018-09-04 07:57:27 UTC

And it doesn't work as well for more advanced MS Office work.

2018-09-04 07:57:45 UTC

Huh. I don't use any advanced office features, so I guess I wouldn't know.

2018-09-04 07:58:12 UTC

That tends to be the thing.

2018-09-04 07:58:28 UTC

What a shame

2018-09-04 07:58:32 UTC

Most people don't really use that much of Office. But when you learn the more powerful stuff, you can't really leave.

2018-09-04 07:58:50 UTC

Particularly if other people are using them with you.

2018-09-04 07:59:08 UTC

I don't use it often

2018-09-04 07:59:21 UTC

School and a few other things

2018-09-04 07:59:59 UTC

I use it for spreadsheets rather frequently, but for text I usually just use gedit or nano

2018-09-04 08:00:20 UTC

and yes, I did say I use nano on the desktop. fight me

2018-09-04 08:00:50 UTC

"gedit or nano"

2018-09-04 08:00:53 UTC

I don't know you anymore.

2018-09-04 08:01:01 UTC

Whatever works

2018-09-04 08:01:02 UTC

I use Google slides, docs, and sheetz

2018-09-04 08:01:09 UTC

vim master race.

2018-09-04 08:01:14 UTC

2018-09-04 08:01:21 UTC

vim is inconvenient to use

2018-09-04 08:01:24 UTC
