So just some thoughts I had while watching Tim's video today: it seems to me that this is a major failing of the (two-)party system. You cease voting based on shared ideals and stated principles or policies, and end up voting for A primarily because you don't like B - whether the image of B is accurate or the distorted and demonised characterisation.
And I think that's why you see loads more voter fatigue/apathy and political disconnect; people knowing that the candidates they believe will do the best job will *never* get in because another candidate has more funding, or has pandered to the wider audience, or has broken down their ideas into more appetizing soundbytes or buzzwords - and so what's the point.
And then you have the problem of de-radicalization. How do you get the hyperpartisans and ideological zealots to step down and come to public forums to discuss their ideas and be able to compromise, instead of harassing or attacking their opponents.
Flak?! is that you?!
@Inquisition yep 2 party system is a scam
It is pretty fucked up
@Inquisition YOU cant just come in here and spread that kind of fake news!
kappa
As a person living in a country with MANY parties
Your 2 party system isn't much worse
I am trying to deradicalize people, but, they keep doubling down....
In my country, a group with 15% of the votes gets to push their ideology on people too 😉
What's particularly fucked up is that the entire reason we've got these two drastically different parties is because of a *serious* modern miscommunication on founding principles.
Cause they bitch
@Dr.Wol I live in Canada, so we're sort of in the same boat; we have like 3 and a half major parties.
current dutch ruling government is 4 parties
Yay, coalition.
oh gawd how does anything get done @Dr.Wol
well
it doesn't
it does actually
that's the good part
The "Libertarian" party
Sold out EVERYTHING they campaigned for
Literally 😄
lol
😩
The parties create coalitions
Of course they did.
Basically, you wind up with 4 parties
three of which band together to form a majority
to bully the third.
they campaigned for a referendum right for the people
And now they are the biggest advocates for abolishing it, for this reason
"It gives people the sense they're not being listened to"
Because they actively ignore the referendums people call for
You can almost set a watch - If Ukip becomes a serious contender in an election
no joke
Lol, did you guys see Glen Beck on the Rubin Report yet?
You're going to have a coalition of Labour and Tories against them.
It's going to be ridiculous.
same party wants the state paid media to check independent media for "fake news" 😄
lol
Yeah lets have the people with a conflict of interest be the judges on what is fake news and what isn't
