So there is this chick that's spoiled to high hell and always starting problems, and as I knew something was about to go down I started recording.

Only thing is right before the fight happened my freind walked in, and he made some comments venting about someone who was being mean to him for no reason (it's a whole other story but the other guy was autistic and thought the banter from him was bullying).

Anyway a fight broke out later on in the recording, but the school punished my friend too, who did nothing wrong but the comments, and suspended him.

So he's mad at me, and another person lied to him saying I started the recording as he came into the room even though I started recording about 3 min before.

I never wanted to get him in trouble. I even told the campus as his statements were not libelous or threatening any harm so it was free speech, but obviously they didn't listen.

I only wanted to PREVENT drama as a recording is unbiased. Clearly I screwed up, but I only wanted to help.

Am I an asshole for starting to record a developing (and later physical) fight?

Yes.

If you really wanted to prevent drama you'd knock both their heads together
