Military and law enforcement stopped using the .45 as a standard round in the US a while ago.

You can still find some using it, but not with standard issued guns.

By that logic, we should switch to 7.62x39 over 5.56.

and if military was using optimal caliber they would have adapted 6.5mm, instead of keeping 5.56. , but thats way more complicated than that.

in case of military it need to be just powerfull enoght to do the job, and be abel to carry as much ammo as possible.

and law enforcement basically need that same just powerfull enought, so it doesnt overpenetrate and cause harm behind the target, if you need to shoot in crouded place.

but as self defence stopping power is everything, and after that comes practicality.
sence in if you get jumped on, you dont have too many shots or time.

Well with law enforcement, it isn't about carrying as much as possible at all.

They only usually carry 2 mags on them.

law enforcement uses same standard of "just powerfull enought", sence too powerfull caliber would add risk of injuring bystanders.
for example shooting outside someones house, too powerfull caliber would add risk of penetrating wall and injuring/killing someone inside of said house, where smaller caliber would stop in that wall.

and law enforcement doesnt want bullet to penetrate body, sence that would only add risk of hitting someone behind target.

And same issue with added risk of ricochets.

and law enfocrement tries enters sitsuation at safe distance.
but when you get jumped on you dont have that same advantage, and need as much stopping power as practical.
