I quit doing 5x5 today after doing it for 4 years because I was afraid of injuring my joints
I switched to a lower weight 8x5 because it's not as much tension and it wil strengthen my ligaments
I intend to lift for another 25 years or more

5x5 isn't going to injure your joints unless you're doing the lifts wrong, in which case 8x5 at lighter weight is still going to injure your joints

In what way? The things that will cause injury are poor mechanics and don't have much to do with whether you're fatigued or not.
