There was a point at which 75% of the world was in slavery or some sort indentured survitude. The principles the USA was founded on led to slavery being abolished here.

I think those values were based on our religious heritage, but i think the basic values can stand on their own.

I'm on the fence in terms of it being truly secular values or it simply being a derivative off of religious values.

My hypothesis of the enlightenment "inspiration" is how religion/christianity decoupled itself from having a top-down approach of salvation (Catholic church/Pope) to a bottom up (Protestants/Lutherans) where your relationship is directly w/God, not through a intermediary channel.

Which evolved to 'individual human rights' no longer being given to the populace by Kings and Lords (top down), but rather the individuals have born rights naturally.
