Thing is that people are cognitive misers and nobody is perfect, so even the people who ought to know better can easily end up just saying yes to everything, because we are just wired that way. While age isn't a foolproof shield, older people are usually experienced with how things are in general when compared to spring chickens.

That is not to say it is foolproof, but seriously... considering who I was 5 or 10 years ago... I knew next to nothing and was an idiot in quite a few ways. I'll make the assumption that goes for most other people.

But yeah, we have had too good times and too little adversity. That has bred complacency into quite a lot of people.
