Matriarchies are functional, but only in primitive hunter gatherer societies lacking understanding of biology and never lacking in food or resources (bonobos exist where gorillas and chimps *don't* for example). Matriarchy can only exist in luxury, and, well, privilege. And only if utterly isolated from Patriarchy, which is superior in existing in non-Eden environments and can easily overtake matriarchies (chimps for example, or Civilization vs Matriarchy's fuck tribe of endless grapefruit or whatever).
