Do you know how it actually works? The math involved is almost hilarious.

2019-04-28 19:01:37 UTC

D'Hondt's law uses a partition system:
A = 5000 votes, their numbers are 5000/2500/1666/1250
B = 4000 votes, their numbers are 4000/2000/1333/1000
C = 3000 votes, their numbers are 3000/1500/1000/750
D = 2000 votes, their numbers are 2000/1000/666/500

2019-04-28 19:01:56 UTC

i know how it works but cannot describe it in english

2019-04-28 19:02:08 UTC

Their numbers (whole, half, third, fourth, etc) are what actually decide who gets seats

2019-04-28 19:02:31 UTC

so you get a number, first number is all of the votes of your party, second half etc.etc. That number decides whether or not you go in

2019-04-28 19:03:00 UTC

For example, if an area gives FOUR seats, the results would look like this:
Seat #1 = A (because 5000)
Seat #2 = B (because 4000)
Seat #3 = C (because 3000)
Seat #4 = A again (because 2500)

2019-04-28 19:03:02 UTC

which means that if a party gets a lot of votes but its candidates' don't they will still be chosen

2019-04-28 19:03:08 UTC

it favors larger parties

2019-04-28 19:04:20 UTC

If an area gives SEVEN seats, the results would look like this:
Seat #1 = A (because 5000)
Seat #2 = B (because 4000)
Seat #3 = C (because 3000)
Seat #4 = A again (because 2500)
Seat #5 = D (because 2000)
Seat #6 = B (because 2000)
Seat #7 = A again (because 1666)

2019-04-28 19:06:07 UTC

is that good or bad?

2019-04-28 19:06:12 UTC

i don't really know

2019-04-28 19:06:28 UTC

otoh it keeps fringe parties out but perpetuates status quo

2019-04-28 19:06:54 UTC

I think it tries to block stupid parties from getting a seat, which is not a bad idea.

2019-04-28 19:07:08 UTC

i think we could experiment with alternative vote. If my #1 candidate doesn't get in my vote goes to #2

2019-04-28 19:07:14 UTC

Would you really want a bunch of local morons to gain a seat in the nation's parliament?

2019-04-28 19:07:21 UTC

not really

2019-04-28 19:07:37 UTC

but it keeps large parties in because they are large

2019-04-28 19:08:08 UTC

i think there should be an individual threshold and by passing that you would get in automatically

2019-04-28 19:08:18 UTC

that would be more representative

2019-04-28 19:11:37 UTC

Nah, it's about representing an area. It favors "focused" voting.

2019-04-28 19:11:58 UTC

Some parties in Spain get quite some votes nationwide but it's so spread out they end up with no seats.

2019-04-28 19:12:19 UTC

Meanwhile, "region-locked" parties get a bunch of seats with less votes because they actually represent their area.

2019-04-28 19:13:10 UTC

if you're semi-popular everywhere shouldn't you get seats?

2019-04-28 19:13:36 UTC

Nah, that's not how politics work. You gotta represent YOUR AREA and look for the best for YOUR AREA.

2019-04-28 19:14:03 UTC

Every citizen should have a MP and a senator.

2019-04-28 19:14:04 UTC

that's how most people vote

2019-04-28 19:14:16 UTC

with their own area in mind

2019-04-28 19:14:37 UTC

i don't. i try to look 20 years into the future and see who can do the least damage

2019-04-28 19:16:58 UTC

After 10% bleach is starting to look really tasty. 😭

PSOE did an awful job the past 12 months or so, with many scandals and stupid proposals, HOW ARE THEY GETTING BETTER!?

2019-04-28 19:17:53 UTC

How has PP lost HALF their percentage so far?

2019-04-28 19:19:19 UTC

🔴 = the left
🔵 = the right
none = JxCat and PNV are right-wing but they are such ultra-regionalists that they favor the left because they give them money and might grant them independence one day.

2019-04-28 19:53:45 UTC

The image of the night so far... 😭

Kermit (called "Gustavo" in Spain) is a frog, like Pepe, so he's a representative of the right.

2019-04-28 19:59:18 UTC

54% counted, this is the worst election day of my life.

We're gonna see a left and far-left government.

2019-04-28 20:01:30 UTC

Taxes will go up, laziness (unemployment) too, retirement money also up.

2019-04-28 20:01:35 UTC

We were supposed to undo it!!!

2019-04-28 20:02:04 UTC

I saw polls with the 🔵 getting a total of like 180-185.

2019-04-28 20:02:14 UTC

We're at like 145.

2019-04-28 20:03:20 UTC

Also, Vox was supposed to get to 35-40, not 23.
