And by emancipated I mean really emancipated: marriage was abolished, they could perform all the same jobs and functions that men did, and they could sleep around as much as they want. Including fighting in the anarchist militias. Spoiler alert: this didn't go too well. They created love triangles, added emotion to the fighting lines, etc. It was a shitshow. Many movies about that time portray this as a paradise, but in reality it created a pretty toxic and degenerate environment. Also, the children were raised by the collective, not their parents.
