Why did people in ancient France paint on cave walls?

i think they did them for all kinds of reasons. commemorate the dead, brag about lineage, welcome signs, even bantzint other tribes

My grandfather used to talk to my mother about that but now he's turning 89 and still works and is probably going to live forever.
