@Maw I'm not sure what balkanization would actually look like. It doesn't play through for me in a physical sense. For the same reason, I can't envision a civil war...but what do I know? Americans do have plenty of guns but I'm not sure how actual combat could be pitched. Seems like localized fiefdoms might be possible and the Libertarians could get their wish with reigning warlord factions and whatnot. I think they would quickly find civil war targets and meaningful strategy to be scarce, in any case. Maybe something like the Spanish civil war but this is a big country and more ideologically integrated than I think peoole think. Perhaps I'm just thinking wishfully.

What actually worries me in a more plausible sense is that, amongst the thousands of keyboard patriots threatening to hold us to a presupposed result of one election at gunpoint, there will be a handful of Timmy McVeighs and Dylann Roofs whose delusions are so convincing such that they are willing to throw out the baby with the bathwater but will end up as just individuals or small groups endeavoring domestic terrorism. Ironically, they will be the ones who were hysterically shrieking the loudest about rioters.

One thing I know is that no one goes into insurrection thinking they are wrong. That's why the tsunami of fake news and alt-facts are particularly dangerous on the 'patriot' side in a direct violence way. Throw enough shit at the wall and something will stick. People are exploiting that for media market share and are stooping to further extremes in order to secure it.
