That's doesn't mean nobody else will ever be on them, but they are in the UHF or VHF business bands and don't require a license

2020-04-29 02:14:04 UTC

Really just stay off of the HAM channels and don't pisss off the boomer hams and you won't have issues.

2020-04-29 02:16:08 UTC

I've read that the boomer hams are like fudds on steroids

2020-04-29 02:17:06 UTC

@[TX]YimYam ordered. Hyped to learn comms not gonna lie

2020-04-29 02:20:00 UTC

@Artemis they are turbo autists

2020-04-29 02:20:39 UTC

The emilitia podcast had an episode about ham radio, and they talked a bit about the fudd hams

2020-04-29 02:21:45 UTC

Reality is they are mostly pretty cool, just spurgy

2020-04-29 02:22:11 UTC

It is pretty cool to be able to talk to people around the world depending on what frequencies you use

2020-04-29 02:22:44 UTC

And the HF guys are nuts, some of those antennas take up a whole yard and signal depends on space weather and shit

2020-04-29 02:24:18 UTC

It was pretty cool learning about the history of it though. Basically a bunch of nerds slapping shit together in their sheds and seeing what worked. Supposedly ham was a slur used by professional radio and telegraph operators

2020-04-29 02:24:41 UTC

Yep, the original tech rebels

2020-04-29 02:25:01 UTC

ironic considering they're all about rules now

2020-04-29 02:25:19 UTC

Kinda....

2020-04-29 02:25:34 UTC

It's really only more about keeping the idiots away

2020-04-29 02:26:16 UTC

Honestly you could make up a callsign and nobody would really know if you pretended right

2020-04-29 02:27:01 UTC

My friend told me a story about when his friend was piss drunk fucking with a ham radio getting on the police frequencies yelling whiskey jack!! Officer down!! And some volunteer firefighters beat his ass lmao

2020-04-29 02:27:15 UTC

Yeah, that was a lie

2020-04-29 02:27:27 UTC

Good story though you should have heard it

2020-04-29 02:28:06 UTC

Ham frequencies and police frequencies aren't the same and especially these days the police don't use standard UHF

2020-04-29 02:28:34 UTC

It’s fun being a volunteer firefighter til you gotta get up like 18 times cause some meth head wants to call and then refuse treatment when you get there

2020-04-29 02:28:41 UTC

I mean he's old as dirt it could have been 30 years ago for all i know

2020-04-29 02:28:45 UTC

Police started moving to trunked systems in the 90's, and by 2001 were mostly all moved over.

2020-04-29 02:29:04 UTC

@TheClassyRandom oof, right

2020-04-29 02:29:42 UTC

Our chief basically said fuck em no point in going if they’re gonna keep refusing treatment

2020-04-29 02:30:16 UTC

We have mostly dope heads around here, give them narc an and they just wanna act like they are fine

2020-04-29 02:31:28 UTC

So far we haven’t had to use narcan

2020-04-29 02:31:57 UTC

I'm on the east coast in the hotbed of it

2020-04-29 02:32:44 UTC

In rural America dopeheads everywhere.

2020-04-29 02:33:02 UTC

Louisiana here

2020-04-29 02:33:31 UTC

These commie idiots give them places to shoot up around here

2020-04-29 02:34:13 UTC

Yeah I saw that. I was like the hell is going on over there.

2020-04-29 02:34:33 UTC

They get to have fun. I'm jealous I respect myself too much to join in

2020-04-29 02:35:50 UTC

Commiefornia is the first place we’re gonna have to take back honestly

2020-04-29 02:36:17 UTC

Break legs and shit just to get morphine and oxys prescribed here

2020-04-29 02:36:22 UTC

It’s ridiculous

2020-04-29 02:36:24 UTC

Just load the fault lines with tactical nukes and send them on their way

2020-04-29 02:39:38 UTC

Well that’s another question but how are we gonna get tac nukes and it’s almost time to go frogging 🤤

2020-04-29 04:05:36 UTC

Anyone know anything about using CHIRP or other alternatives to conventional localized internet data networks? Does it have a limited range, do I need a license? I currently still use flashdrives as part of a sneaker network, but it's a hassle. I don't trust VPNs or TOR, it's all shady and never 100% secure

2020-04-29 04:22:19 UTC

I thought TOR was pretty solid as long as you don’t log into stuff or have it full screen. Apparently that’s how they got DPR

2020-04-29 04:22:20 UTC

Im running Surfshark VPN, would also like to know

2020-04-29 04:23:33 UTC

The problem with TOR as far as I know is that you have to connect to a node which could be compromised. I have heard that using a VPN plus TOR helps.
