Don't need to worry about power on the FRS/GMRS channels either... theres no "radio pokice" really... the FCC doesn't have time to mess with that shit, nor do they care.
The advantages are great... it's waterproof, billet aluminum shell, takes all real military accessories, doesn't need amplified PTT for peltors, is 10 watts, much better reception, better antenna options.
But, with a few cheap baofeng radios, a Tupperware container and a decent solar panel you can make yourself a nice cheap repeater to drop on a high peak and rock out.
I'm back in Delaware now, which is only slightly better.... but if you want a permit here you have to put your name in the paper and pay hundreds of dollars.

They did that a few weeks ago because when they first started the quarantines a bunch of moron car kids from NJ were going there and having huge bon fires. One of them was super drunk and rolled down a hill and had to be rescued. Their "friends" all took off instead of helping.
What you are probably getting is UHF rebroadcasts of fire and EMS, they do that around me, but the main channels are up in the 700 and 800Mhz range and digital.
Use that website and look at your area and you'll see what frequencies you need to tune into for everything and if they are encrypted or not, which most likely they are out there.
And any of the "side channels" formally known as talk channels are typically encrypted for the very fact that they don't want us plebs hearing their chatter.
You're not gonna catch much of FRS or GMRS except families on vacation and possibly some small businesses. But you're gonna get less than a mile of range out if them because they are super low power.

@redbeard I've been looking at the APX series, but I've always held off because I have 25 licensed UHF channels from the FCC and most of the people I work with use standard UHF channels.
Getting even business band channels licensed is expensive, and P25 digital even more so. If you're just talking with your crew, the FRS bands tend to be fine for most.
Yeah, that's what most people do... with any HT you're limited in range anyway unless you setup your own repeaters, or have some local to you. But you're still on open airwaves anyway.
The ones redbeard has there are expensive digital radios that require existing infrastructure, or are just as limited as a standard ham HT, with the addition of *legal* encryption.
