Pay attention to the riff center. Ildjarn-Nidhogg contains some metal tracks but they're barely metal.
Metal riffs pivot around a series of tonal center usually. Black Sabbath, Priest, Slayer especially.
Then these lurch forward. A riff rock band just connects the riffs.
Compare Ildjarn to the Ramones or early Led Zeppelin.
Just in terms of structure
Also the happy major scales are punk as fuck.
It's melodically constructed but it's very hard to call it black metal. Lacks the fluid chords of Bathory and Sarcofago.
Ildjarn-Nidhogg is on the edge of crossover and metal as ambient music.
Some of the other material on forest poetry? Not at all.

structurally it just has to be close enough to qualify as metal
If it is primarily melodic as opposed to rhythmic or harmonic, then it is metal if it has the spirit
And it needs to have electric guitar timbre
that's it
can't say I enjoy the drums on that nidhogg album

Structurally? Forest poetry cycles between two four or five note riffs. One typically a variation on the other.
