GG @Dr.Cosby, you just advanced to level 4!

2019-07-25 11:39:50 UTC

thats like any system

2019-07-25 11:40:06 UTC

they never work out that great in practise 😉

2019-07-25 11:40:16 UTC

So, while some kind of an overhaul of the system might make more sense, at least for shorter term solutions, playing with minimum wage is a way to offset some of the bad stuff

2019-07-25 11:40:40 UTC

the issue is reforming a system completely just introduces new bad outcomes

2019-07-25 11:40:56 UTC

That too. It's really tricky and full of variables

2019-07-25 11:40:57 UTC

they may not be as bad in theory but they will still be there

2019-07-25 11:41:11 UTC

and actually could end up worse

2019-07-25 11:41:20 UTC

so sometimes its the devil you know

2019-07-25 11:42:12 UTC

But as far as minimum wage goes - there are real tangible benefits. Some reported negatives as well, yes. But even if you use the "free market" model - the person you will be paying 15/hr is PROBABLY going to end up being a more valuable asset than the 7/hr guy anyways, no?

2019-07-25 11:42:19 UTC

Like, you're gonna hire the best guy

2019-07-25 11:42:25 UTC

And more money attracts better people

2019-07-25 11:42:53 UTC

Will if fully compensate for itself? Probably not in many cases, tbh

2019-07-25 11:43:39 UTC

so we do have the minimum wage though

2019-07-25 11:43:48 UTC

But morally, it's good. And for society as a whole, it seems good. Your burger flipper is better at flipping his burgers (and all the other stuff that comes with the job), and he's going to have a better life, have better kids, etc

2019-07-25 11:43:56 UTC

so i think a problem comes in when people expect that to be a "living" wage

2019-07-25 11:43:59 UTC

its just not going to be

2019-07-25 11:44:04 UTC

unless you live very frugally

2019-07-25 11:46:00 UTC

But why not? Why not have the minimum be something that lets you live - again, everyone's definition of "comfortable" is different, but surely there are some basics that aren't hard to agree upon

2019-07-25 11:47:37 UTC

Isn't it sadistic to have somebody work hard all day, and not be able to support themselves?

2019-07-25 11:48:28 UTC

Stop imagining the lazy guy who wants to work as little as possible and wants to just "squeeze by" with handouts

2019-07-25 11:48:52 UTC

Much more typical is the HARD WORKER who works 40+ hours per week

2019-07-25 11:49:14 UTC

Why doesn't he deserve a comfortable life?

2019-07-25 11:49:51 UTC

Oh y’all went on a ramble for hours, but now I’m home

2019-07-25 11:49:51 UTC

He's not working any less than other people! In fact, many of those jobs are harder and require MORE work

2019-07-25 11:49:57 UTC

Yea minimum wage is dumb

2019-07-25 11:50:09 UTC

Alright, say something smart now.

2019-07-25 11:51:13 UTC

You're religious too, so I know this is going to be Good and Smart.

2019-07-25 11:56:28 UTC

Well. If you calculate your expenses per month or even per year, you’ll know what you need to be making. This is simply done with planning ahead, something that should be taught in schools. Something that I do to this day. I know how much I make minus taxes and then use that income to pay all my bills. If a citizen is struggling to make ends meet, he simply did not prepare. (Let’s excuse medical bills because that is a universal healthcare debate I’m not going to get into here.) let’s take a healthy young male today. There is no reason why that male needs to be on food stamps when he is working full time making $11 per hour. Trust me I used to be in the same position making only $8 and still had $500 a month of just throwaway money.
With this being said, you use that to move up and gain experience. If you’re still making only $11 an hour when you’re 40 years old, you didn’t prepare correctly.
***Now let’s remove minimum wage.***
Take that same male and put him in a place that pays $3 per hour.. the male says he can’t pay his bills and every employee leaves that company and works for another one that pays more. This eventually keeps going on its own until all bills can be paid for. = Unenforced minimum wages based on the household needs

2019-07-25 11:56:50 UTC

Please if you’re going to respond, plan accordingly.

2019-07-25 11:58:33 UTC

Where did you live, where $11 per hour was your wage, and your living conditions seemed adequate to you - with $500 of throwaway money too! What was your rent? What modern amenities did you have (TV, PC with fast internet, etc)?

2019-07-25 11:58:59 UTC

Oh oops, you made $8

2019-07-25 11:59:22 UTC

So tell me. And also, WHEN was this. Because inflation 😉

2019-07-25 11:59:56 UTC

Texas, I was getting paid $8 per hour, and living in a studio apartment for $400 a month. I had an average honda for a car and even went to community college and paid for it. I did this for a year and a half.

2019-07-25 12:00:08 UTC

And this was about 2012

2019-07-25 12:00:19 UTC

So the inflation isn’t that high

2019-07-25 12:00:56 UTC

11.6% to be exact

2019-07-25 12:01:35 UTC

I would need to get paid $9 today to do the exact same thing

2019-07-25 12:02:19 UTC

400 for rent is obscenely low for the vast majority of the country.

2019-07-25 12:02:29 UTC

But okay I will ignore inflation in fact. 8 * 40 * 4 = 1280. 400 in rent, so you're left with 880

2019-07-25 12:02:34 UTC

Like I said, make it based on what the household needs
