The problem comes when minimum wage tries to be a living wage

2019-07-25 11:34:36 UTC

Like, a simple wrench to throw in those gears is how people need money NOW to pay for stuff. And they desire stability and stuff from their job. They get hired at a suboptimal rate, they are very likely to stay there, even if it's shitty

2019-07-25 11:35:00 UTC

Very true people are like that

2019-07-25 11:35:03 UTC

You can blame them for being dumb, when the next door fast food place if offering a bit more money

2019-07-25 11:35:14 UTC

But it's not so simple in real life situations

2019-07-25 11:35:24 UTC

Of course

2019-07-25 11:35:49 UTC

And don't forget about monopolization as well as unofficial cooperation that almost certainly goes on behind closed doors

2019-07-25 11:35:50 UTC

But thinking s minimum wage is going to sustain you for a long time is very foolish

2019-07-25 11:36:11 UTC

Is it really that hard for businesses to band together to screw people by all offering extra low wages?

2019-07-25 11:36:24 UTC

I’m sure they do that

2019-07-25 11:36:53 UTC

The business is only there to make profit

2019-07-25 11:37:22 UTC

Keeping costs low

2019-07-25 11:38:06 UTC

Mind you this is for faceless corp who do not value their staff

2019-07-25 11:38:16 UTC

There are pro people businesses

2019-07-25 11:38:30 UTC

Of course

2019-07-25 11:39:38 UTC

Basically, I see this a bit as a "theory" versus "practical application" type thing. In theory, it makes sense to let the free market regulate this stuff, but in practice it doesn't seem to work well.

2019-07-25 11:39:39 UTC

GG @Dr.Cosby, you just advanced to level 4!

2019-07-25 11:39:50 UTC

thats like any system

2019-07-25 11:40:06 UTC

they never work out that great in practise 😉

2019-07-25 11:40:16 UTC

So, while some kind of an overhaul of the system might make more sense, at least for shorter term solutions, playing with minimum wage is a way to offset some of the bad stuff

2019-07-25 11:40:40 UTC

the issue is reforming a system completely just introduces new bad outcomes

2019-07-25 11:40:56 UTC

That too. It's really tricky and full of variables

2019-07-25 11:40:57 UTC

they may not be as bad in theory but they will still be there

2019-07-25 11:41:11 UTC

and actually could end up worse

2019-07-25 11:41:20 UTC

so sometimes its the devil you know

2019-07-25 11:42:12 UTC

But as far as minimum wage goes - there are real tangible benefits. Some reported negatives as well, yes. But even if you use the "free market" model - the person you will be paying 15/hr is PROBABLY going to end up being a more valuable asset than the 7/hr guy anyways, no?

2019-07-25 11:42:19 UTC

Like, you're gonna hire the best guy

2019-07-25 11:42:25 UTC

And more money attracts better people

2019-07-25 11:42:53 UTC

Will if fully compensate for itself? Probably not in many cases, tbh

2019-07-25 11:43:39 UTC

so we do have the minimum wage though

2019-07-25 11:43:48 UTC

But morally, it's good. And for society as a whole, it seems good. Your burger flipper is better at flipping his burgers (and all the other stuff that comes with the job), and he's going to have a better life, have better kids, etc

2019-07-25 11:43:56 UTC

so i think a problem comes in when people expect that to be a "living" wage

2019-07-25 11:43:59 UTC

its just not going to be

2019-07-25 11:44:04 UTC

unless you live very frugally

2019-07-25 11:46:00 UTC

But why not? Why not have the minimum be something that lets you live - again, everyone's definition of "comfortable" is different, but surely there are some basics that aren't hard to agree upon

2019-07-25 11:47:37 UTC

Isn't it sadistic to have somebody work hard all day, and not be able to support themselves?

2019-07-25 11:48:28 UTC

Stop imagining the lazy guy who wants to work as little as possible and wants to just "squeeze by" with handouts

2019-07-25 11:48:52 UTC

Much more typical is the HARD WORKER who works 40+ hours per week

2019-07-25 11:49:14 UTC

Why doesn't he deserve a comfortable life?

2019-07-25 11:49:51 UTC

Oh y’all went on a ramble for hours, but now I’m home

2019-07-25 11:49:51 UTC

He's not working any less than other people! In fact, many of those jobs are harder and require MORE work
