"However, in general, the Nazis were able to persecute the Jews with little objection from the public.
There were a number of reasons for this:
1.Censorship meant the public did not know the full extent of the persecution.
2.Propaganda used the Jews as scapegoats for the countryβs problems, so they were not popular in Germany.
3.Eugenics and anti-Semitism taught in schools and the Strength through Joy movement (KdF) branded the Jews as undesirable subhumans.
4.Some Germans were jealous of the fact that Jews held many professional jobs and owned businesses. They believed the relatively small number of Jews were more influential than they should have been.
5.Fear of the SS and Gestapo meant people kept quiet.
6.There was a history of anti-Semitism in Germany and Europe before the Nazis (but the Nazis took persecution beyond anything that had gone before).
By the outbreak of World War Two in September 1939, the Jews were stateless with no civil rights, their employment options in Germany were severely restricted, their property had been confiscated and they feared for their safety.
The Nazis made life so unpleasant in Germany that many Jews attempted to leave the country.
By 1939, one third of Jews had fled."
