You should be evaluated thoroughly to make sure you aren't otherwise mentally ill or dealing with some sort of severe trauma before being allowed on that stuff.

I had psych evaluations and letters before I started hormones and had my surgery. One of my letters was from the head of psychiatry at the site I practiced at the time. It really was nice since at first he was not thrilled about my change.
